An exceptionally fine and rare Charles I memorial ring

Circa 1650

The central rock crystal oval bezel with a watercolour portrait miniature of Charles I in armour after a portrait by William Dobson now at Crosby Hall, mounted in gold. With old brilliant-cut diamond shoulders, one a paste replacement. In its original ebony box, the lid with applied silver royal crown cipher and initials 'CR'. With a handwritten 19th century note in the interior reading "Memorial Ring of Charles 1st given by his Queen Henrietta Maria to an ancestor of my grandmother Anne Heathcote, daughter of Sir Nigel Gresley of Drakelow." Accompanied by various documentary letters, mostly 19th century, describing the ring and its owners

Property of a gentleman

Provenance: Given by Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of Charles I, circa 1660-65 whilst she resided in England after the restoration of the monarchy, to Sir Thomas Gresley of Drakelow (1629-1699), Sheriff of Derbyshire 1662-3; By descent to Anne (née Gresley) Heathcote (1755-1797), wife of Sir John Edensor Heathcote (1757-1822) and daughter of Sir Nigel Gresley of Drakelow, 6th Barth., (1727-1787), land and mine-owner and builder of canals, and his wife Elizabeth Wynne; Bequeathed by Anne (Gresley) Heathcote to Mrs Thomas Levett (née Gresley), wife of Rev. Thomas Levett of Whittington, Staffs (1770-1843); By whom given to Mrs Selina Fenton (née Gresley) and by descent

Rings such as this were presented to Loyalists by Charles I's wife Queen Henrietta Maria in return for support for the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. These pledges were designed to be redeemed for the amount of the loan or for an honour once the war was won and the monarchy restored. This ring, presented to the Gresley family of Drakelow, was evidently never redeemed, and was then passed down through the family.
