Richard Roper (British, active circa 1749 – 1765)
Portrait of the bay stallion Milo, the property of Viscount Townshend, held by his groom accompanied by a couple of hounds and a terrier
Oil on canvas, in its fine original carved and gilded frame, inscribed lower left
Provenance: Commissioned by Charles, Viscount Townshend (1700-1764), and by descent with the Lords Townshend at Raynham, Norfolk from circa 1760, until 1904; Townshend Heirlooms sale, Christies, lot 68; Private collection England, until sold, Philips London 7 June 1988 (lot 62); Acquired from Lane Fine Art 24 June 1989 by Mr and Mrs R. Seeler, from whose estate re-purchased 2019
Richard Roper's early training took place at the St. Martin's Lane Academy. He worked mainly in oils, although pastel works by him occasionally appear. His great patron was Saville Finch and he also seems to have been employed by the artist entrepreneur Thomas Butler of Pall Mall, who specialised in equestrian paintings in the period 1750-1759. Another painting by Roper of the same horse was also in the same collection at Raynham until dispersed in 1904. It is of similar size to the present painting and similarly inscribed. They were doubtless painted as companion pieces.
