Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795-1875) Turkish Horse no. 2, Right Leg Raised Circa 1857 Bronze with a warm brown patina with red and golden undertones Signed 'BARYE' The present work is a rare atelier cast which was produced after Barye remounted his original ‘Cheval Turc, terrasse carrée’ which he had first modelled in 1840. After Barye's death in 1875, unusually, this version of the Barye Turkish horse was not included in the studio sale of 1876 when all his models were sold individually with rights of reproduction, thus, no posthumous casts exist. Provenance: English Private Collection. Exhibited: 'L’Atelier de Barye - a group of rare sculptures from the artist's atelier', The Sladmore Gallery, London, 2007, page number 34, cat no. 22, left leg raised (image of another cast). 'Untamed - The Art of Antoine-Louis Barye'. Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. 18 February - 6 May 2006, exhibit no. 57 (with right leg raised), illustrated pages 158-9 (image of another cast). ‘Art in Motion. The Spirit of the Horse’, June 10th to July 8th 2017, Messum’s Wiltshire, Salisbury (this actual cast). Collections: The Baltimore Museum of Art. Musée Fabre, Montpellier. The Corcoran Gallery, Washington. Model Illustrated: 'Les Animaliers' by Jane Horswell, 1971, page 39, (alternate base). 'The Barye Bronzes', by Stuart Pivar, 1974, page 222, (left leg raised). 'Barye - Catalogue Raisonné des Sculptures’ by Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme, 2001, page 267, cat. no. A129. 'Untamed - The Art of Antoine Louis Barye' William R Johnston and Simon Kelly, The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, 2006, page 158 - 9, (alternate base).
