France 1849-50 First Issue 1fr. vivid vermilion, strong brilliant colour
1849-50 First Issue
1fr. vivid vermilion, strong brilliant colour presented with an unusual clarity of impression, framed by wide margins, used on 24 October 1851 large envelope from Paris to Issoudun, carried at triple rate, tied by two incomplete strikes of the grid cancel being cleanly applied, with dispatch c.d.s. adjacent and arrival on reverse. A very appealing example of this famous franking on cover, this being enhanced by its wonderful freshness, of essential significance in the advanced collection of classic France. Calves certificate (1994). Spink Maury 7a, €37,000. Photo
The 1 franc vermilion is the mythical stamp in the philatelic collection of France. Its rarity is mainly due to its brief period of impression, probably only during the last days of December and the first few days of January. As its color is very close to that of the 40 centimes, the postal administration, in order to avoid possible confusion, asked the post offices to return their stamps and proceeded to destroy them.
