Awarded on:October 16th, 1944
Holstein born on 25.9.1913 in Ehrang and joined the Infanterie Regiment 698 as part of the larger 342. Infanterie-Division and was first send to Serbia and Croatia. In this area the Division was occupied with heavy partisan warfare.
Early 1942 the Division was send to Russia. Holstein soon knew to promote himself with the infantry assault badge (probably for Croatia) in silver and the Iron cross 2nd class. Holstein also got injured on 8.8.1942 probably in the Rshew area where he was awarded with the wound badge in black. It was then in spring of 1944 that Holstein really popped up as a hero of the Regiment. Soon, one after another Holstein was awarded with the EK1, the close combat clasp in bronze and on 16.10.1944 the Knight's cross of the iron cross. during the fighting in mid-late 1944, the Soviets launched an attack against the positions of the 2./Grenadier-Regiment 698. They managed to achieve a penetration, and all the Kompanie officers became casualties. In response to this major crisis, Obergefreiter Holstein decided to take over command of the Kompanie. At the head of the Kompanie headquarters troops and several lightly wounded men, he launched a counter attack against the strong enemy. This managed to retake the old German frontline after a bitter fight.
Johann Holstein would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this act of bravery and devotion to duty.
