A Moulded Porcelain 'Zhong Kui' Snuff Bottle, Jiaqing Period, Early 19th Century
清 嘉庆时期 粉彩模印'钟馗嫁妹'烟壶
Moulded in relief with the demon queller and his attendants one side, the other with his younger sister; with an apocryphal Qianlong mark to base 底部有红彩乾隆寄托款, height 2.6 in — 6.5 cm

Provenance:
From the Collection of A.W. Bahr, acquired by descent through the family.

Born in Shanghai to a German father and a Chinese mother, Abel William Bahr (1877-1959) dealt in Chinese art and antiquities together with his brother Peter Johannes Bahr (1882-1928). A.W. Bahr moved to England in 1910 and divided his time over the next three decades between Britain and New York, the latter being where he had a gallery. Between 1946 and 1951, Bahr and his family lived in Montreal.

A.W. Bahr authored the book "Old Chinese Porcelain and Works of Art in China", published in 1911, which illustrated pieces from his collection that were exhibited in Shanghai in November 1908. In 1927, a collection of early jades formed by Bahr was exhibited at the Field Museum in Chicago, the catalogue published by then-curator Berthold Laufer. The Field Museum acquired the jades the following year. Jade carvings and paintings from his collection have also been illustrated in early publications by Stanley Charles Nott and Osvald Siren. Other museums that hold pieces from his collection include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Ontario Museum, the British Museum, and the Freer Gallery of Art.
