Peter Clapham (P.C.) Sheppard, OSA, RCA (1879-1965), LADY EVELYN RIVER, TEMAGAMI, CIRCA 1935, oil on
LADY EVELYN RIVER, TEMAGAMI, CIRCA 1935
oil on canvas
signed; estate stamp verso
35 x 44 in — 88.9 x 111.8 cm
Provenance:
Estate of the artist;
Private Collection, Ontario
Note:
Peter Clapham Sheppard’s majestic Lady Evelyn River, Temagami of the middle 1930s is one of his largest paintings to come to market and distinguishes him amongst his contemporaries and peers in the Group of Seven. The view of the rushing river is poised, more about the rhythms of brushstrokes defining the current, foliage, and background sky than it is about conveying presence in the landscape.
The water cascading down and across the rapids in a zig-zag is consistent with the best of Sheppard’s paintings from the early 1920s and on. Whether urban views in Montreal or Toronto, or the present work’s scene from the near north, Sheppard’s distinctive broad brushstrokes draw the paint and viewers’ eyes through the composition. His fine modulations of the water’s blue, green, and yellow further distinguish him from his peers who could not match his lyric enthusiasm and restraint. Sheppard’s distinct expressive and formal language is instantly recognizable, and soars in Lady Evelyn River, Temagami.
Estimate: $25,000—35,000
