Collection of Able Seaman who sailed with Captain Cook on the Resolution comes to London saleroom

Anything to do with Captain Cook is eminently collectable so a 22-lot selection on offer at Sloane Street Auctions on April 12 should attract considerable attention.

They are all connected to Richard Grindall, an Able Seaman aboard Cook’s HMS Resolution 1772-75, and come to auction via family descent.

He served on Cook’s second voyage which was commissioned by the British government with advice from the Royal Society and designed to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible to find out whether any great southern landmass, or Terra Australis, did exist.

Grindall (1751-1820) went on to have a distinguished career in the Royal Navy. His first command was St Vincent, a captured Spanish sloop of 14 guns, from 1781-83. He was in charge of HMS Prince at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He retired after making the rank of vice admiral in 1810.

The man himself

Grindall himself is portrayed here (shown top) in a portrait miniature inscribed on the reverse Painted by Stephen Taylor at andover. 1808. In an early 19th century red leather case, it measures 3in (H) x 2in (W).

Estimated at £3000-5000, this late 18th century compass with hand-painted dial comes in a red leather case with a faded label on the top surface of the case. The compass measures 4.5cm in diameter; the case 6cm.

This drawing on paper with watercolour highlights shows HMS Resolution in c.1773. It is attributed to Henry Roberts, 1756-96, who was aboard the Resolution, and was probably executed by him while she was off the coast of Tahiti between August 16-24, 1773.

Measuring 4in (H) x 3in (W), it is estimated at £10,000-20,000.

Probably Melanesian necklace collected by Richard Grindall - estimate £10,000-20,000 at Sloane Street Auctions.

Guided at £10,000-20,000, this probably Melanesian necklace on fibre, thought to use white and black shell-bead and shells, with 14 ornaments, is 56cm long. It was collected by Grindall in August 1774 in New Caledonia.
