Gladstone Str.', in its case of issue, extremely fine[K.B.] London Gazette 28 December 1945.[C.B.E.] London Gazette 31 December 1943.Wallace Alan Akers was born at Walthamstow, Essex in 1888, the son of chartered accountant Charles Akers and his wife,Mary Ethelreda. He was educated at Lake House School in Bexhill-on-Sea, Essex, and Aldenham School. He entered Christ Church, Oxford, where he specialised in physical chemistry, graduating with first class honours in 1909.After university, he joined Brunner Mond & Company in Winnington, Cheshire, as a researcher. In 1924 he joined the Borneo Company, where he served as its general manager in the Far East. He returned to England in 1928 to join Imperial Chemical Industries, into which Brunner Mond had earlier merged. In 1931 he became the chairman of the Billingham division of ICI. This was mainly concerned with the manufacture of ammonia using hydrogen under high pressure, ammonia being one of the company's most profitable products at the time.Between 1933 and 1936 he was involved in a project to produce synthetic petrol from the hydrogenation of coal; ICI executives envisaged competing with oil companies. It became clear that the process would not be competitive but, since it had defence implications, he sought government subsidies. In this he was opposed by Sir John Anderson, the permanent secretary at the Home Office. The change of government following the October 1931 general election brought with it a change in policy and he was able to secure some financial relief.A reorganisation of ICI in 1937 ended Akers' chairmanship of the Billingham division and he was posted to ICI headquarters, where he worked closely with Holbrook Gaskell. At this time, Britain was starting to re-arm. Munitions contracts had begun to roll in, and ICI expanded its production capacity. He became executive manager in 1939.During 1941 Akers was recruited by the British war-time government as director of the Tube Alloys project, a clandestine programme aiming to research and develop British atomic weapons capabilities. This helped galvanize both Britain and America to proceed down a path which led to the Manhattan Project, and ultimately the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Historian Margaret Gowing noted that 'No doubt Akers had been picked for his personality and drive that had been considered so important and which he possessed in abundance'.Akers' ICI background led to difficulties when it came to dealing with the American Manhattan Project. American officials such as Vannevar Bush, James Conant and Leslie Groves saw him as "an Imperial Chemical Industries man at heart" and he aroused American suspicions that British interest in atomic energy was with its commercial possibilities after the war. As a result, James Chadwick was appointed the head of the British mission to the Manhattan Project, but Akers remained director of Tube Alloys until the end of the war.In 1946, Akers returned to the Board of ICI where he served as director of research until April 1953, when he retired, having reached the compulsory retirement age of 65. He established university research fellowships and donated money to university laboratories for research purposes. In 1946 he established the Butterwick Research Laboratories to carry out fundamental research, unrelated to commercial objectives. They were later renamed the Akers Research Laboratories in his honour.Akers was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1944 and was knighted in 1946, both for his services to the war effort. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1953 and received honorary degrees of D.Sc. from Durham University and D.C.L. from Oxford University. After his retirement he remained a member of the Advisory Council of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and was part of the three-man April 1953 committee that drew up the organisation of what became the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. He was a member of the National Gallery's scientific advisory committee, later becoming a trustee, and was the treasurer of the Chemical Society from 1948 to 1954. He married Bernadette Marie La Marre in 1953 and died at their home in Alton, Hampshire on 1 November 1954.Sold together with a comprehensive obituary for Sir Wallace. For the Distinguished Service Cross and Great War pair awarded to his brother, Lieutenant N.C. Veloce was a great technical innovator and many of its patented designs are commonplace on motorcycles today, including the positive-stop foot shift and swinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers. Renowned for the quality of its products, the company was "always in the picture" in international motorcycle racing from the mid 1920s through to the 1950s, culminating in two 350cc World Championship titles and its legendary, and still-unbeaten, record of averaging over 100mph for 24 hours on a 500cc single cylinder machine. This was achieved on a Venom in 1961 cementing its reputation as one of the best sports bikes of its day. This Venom, being offered at 'no reserve', is part of a deceased estate, so unfortunately not much is known of its history. It appears to have not been run for a number of years, but it turns over freely on the kickstarter. The vendor looks to have been part way through installing an Alton electric starter kit before ill-health took over, so the set-up instructions and some parts not yet fitted, together with the standard items removed, are supplied with the bike. These kits cost over £2,000 and are a fantastic way of keeping these 'hard to kickstart' bikes on the road. It will need a good recommissioning before use, however, once done it will make a good usable classic, supplied with a few workshop manuals and a current V5C. These kits cost over £2,000 and are a fantastic way of keeping these 'hard to kickstart' bikes on the road. It has recently had new tyres fitted and the wheels rebuilt with CWC rims and the vendor gave the clutch an overhaul in October including new plates. Registration No: BOT 779C Frame No: A50B7530 MOT: ExemptA genuine BSA Lighting ClubmanThere are large number of invoices for parts purchased etc.Offered with a current V5C,Dating Certificate from the BSA Owner's ClubThe BSA Lightning Clubman was a 650cc British motorcycle made by BSA at their factory in Birmingham between 1964 and 1965. Finished in Gold and Black, the Lightning Clubman is now a highly sought-after classic motorcycle, thanks to the very limited production run of just 200. Replicas are often created by enthusiasts from the BSA Lightning. This genuine 1965 BSA Lightning Clubman has had just three previous owners from new. Most of the history is known from new. Sold by W.M Snell, in Alton on the 11th May 1965 the BSA was kept by the first keeper until 1969 when it was sold to Mr Brady (higher purchase agreement on file), the BSA being kept and used by Mr Brady until it was sold to a Mr Rushton in 2014. He then set about carrying out a full restoration on the machine, so the Clubman was completely stripped and overhauled to a very high standard using some SRM components. It was completed in 2015 and went back to Snells in Alton where it was supplied originally, albeit now a Ducati dealership. The Clubman was sold again to the late vendor in 2023, due to Mr Ruston's passing. There is a wonderful folder full of paperwork including old pictures from back in the day. On file are lots of receipts for parts and work carried out and a current V5C. Being offered at 'no reserve', some recommissioning will be required before putting it back on the road. Registration No: MVS 519 Frame No: RC12569B MOT: ExemptExquisitely restored by a marque specialist in 2015 and only ridden two miles since, due to the vendor's work commitmentsA potential show winner, replica crankcases, 12v electrics, Alton dynamo and electric startOne of two bikes claiming the same identity. The other is in Australia but this one has a UK V5C Registration DocumentStarted up and run on the 8th February 2020.PLEASE NOTE: Since the catalogue went to press we have been informed the Vincent Owners’ Club are confident that the other motorcycle bearing frame number RC12569B (which is located in Australia) is the one built by the factory in period. As far as we are aware, the UK road registered machine we are offering has never had its frame number stampings independently verified by removing the paint and / or x-ray etc.Vincent Motorcycles, 'the maker of the world's fastest motorcycles' was established in 1928 when Phil Vincent bought the rights to HRD Motors Ltd after the company went into voluntary liquidation. With the backing of his family, wealthy from cattle ranching in Argentina, Vincent acquired the trademark, goodwill and remaining components for £450, renaming the new company Vincent HRD. Initially, motorcycles were sold under the HRD brand name, using their own chassis with proprietary engines, however, in 1934 two new engines were developed, a 500cc single and a 1000cc V-twin. Always the innovator, Vincent now had full control over his products and began introducing many design features that proved to be way ahead of their time, such as cantilever rear suspension. The 1000cc V-twin was 'the fastest motorcycle in the world' at the time and with some astute marketing become the bike everyone aspired to own, the Rapides and the Black Shadows have become some of the most desirable and iconic bikes of the era. This 1955 Vincent Black Shadow was subject to a comprehensive restoration some 10 years ago by a renowned Vincent restorer. This machine benefits from 12v electrics, electric start, and an Alton alternator at the time of build. The previous vendor had the Vincent in the house up until he sold it to the current owner. The Black Shadow had new crankcases from John Wyatt at the time of restoration as the old ones were badly damaged, and this allowed for the fitment of the electric start. During the build, it has been fitted with the following, Godden cylinder heads, Holder barrels and liners, Holder outer cases, Maughan gearbox cover, Omega 7-5-1 pistons Magun crankshaft, Corrilllo Rods, Gary Robinson Mk1 camshaft, V2 clutch, Maughan camshaft and pinion BTH magneto. Alton Alternator, Amal 229 and 289 carburettors, and all stainless fittings. The machine has been run from time to time since ownership and has formed part of a collection of machines. Some very light recommissioning would be advised before placing it back on the road. Once it has been checked over, it would make for an extremely rideable Vincent Black Shadow. The Vincent comes complete with a current V5C. PLEASE NOTE: Since the catalogue went to press we have been informed the Vincent Owners’ Club are confident that the other motorcycle bearing frame number RC12569B (which is located in Australia) is the one built by the factory in period. Although I was a painting student, I had an interest in pottery because I had taken a part-time job in a handcraft pottery at Alton Towers. I bought the jug for £2.10 shillings. MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A.L.S., Montgomery of Alamein, two pages, 4to, Isington Mill, Alton, Hampshire, 27th April 1968, to [Major Michael Babington Charles] Hawkins. Montgomery states that he has received his correspondent´s letter regarding BLESMA (the Military Charity for Limbless Veterans) and their dinner in October, remarking ´I must tell you that for some years I have been adjusting myself mentally and physically to my age; one of my decisions was to give up going out at night and in 1968 this has become a definite rule; I have become an expert in saying "No", very nicely and explaining the reason. The result; I keep very well´, although continuing ´But I find it very difficult to refuse your request because many of your members in this area possibly were my comrades on the battlefields of Africa and Europe. However, I am faced with a dilemma. I leave London on Friday October 11 for Australia and New Zealand to attend Alamein Reunions in Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland, and to meet once more the soldiers of the 9th Australian and 2nd N. Z. divisions who fought so well at Alamein.....If you should have your dinner in September, say 27 or 28th, I would make an exception to my rule and attend it´. Montgomery further writes in a light-hearted manner, ´On my return from Australia and New Zealand I will be worn out, since I know well what will happen once I arrive in those countries! I reckon it may well take 2 years off my life; but since I propose to remain on this planet until I am 100, I don´t mind moving on at 98 - and anyhow I reckon one becomes a bit of a nuisance once over 90! I shall need November to recover, But would attend your dinner if held in early December´. Montgomery concludes ´So now you see my dilemma, and the problem. Perhaps you will let me know your decision?´. An ink annotation at the foot of the second page, presumably in the hand of Hawkins, indicates that a reply was sent to Montgomery on 30th April with the suggestion of either 6th/7th or 13/14th December as suitable dates for the dinner.
