GUNDAM FRANCHISE (1979-PRESENT) - Gundam Epyon Original Production Cel and Matching Drawing - A formidable original production cel of the fearsome Gundam Epyon, accompanied by its matching hand-drawn douga, captured in full battle stance with energy blade ignited. This electrifying piece showcases the menacing, knight-like silhouette of Epyon mid-strike, highlighting the mecha's distinctive crimson armour, angular design, and visceral power. The cel captures Epyon in a moment of explosive motion, a rare glimpse of the raw animation energy behind one of the most iconic mobile suits in the Gundam franchise. Originally piloted by Zechs Marquise, the Gundam Epyon is synonymous with the moral ambiguity and escalating stakes of the series' second half. Its design rejects ranged weapons in favour of brutal close combat. The accompanying douga drawing is a masterclass in anime production draftsmanship;  meticulous colour segmentations in red, green, blue, and orange pencils, mapping out light effects, shadow gradients, and mechanical detail. Of particular note is the powerful perspective: Epyon's angular arms and sabre sweep toward the viewer with imposing presence, all framed neatly within production layout borders.Unlike many of the Gundam Wing mechas, Epyon was designed specifically for the series and not ported from prior Universal Century timelines. Its unique aesthetic - part demonic knight, part dragon - made it an instant favourite among fans and one of the most recognisable designs in the franchise. Dimensions: 23 cm x 31 cm (9" x 12.25")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

Lot 161

English School, late 17th century Portrait of King Charles II, head and shoulders, in armour wearing the George, in a feigned painted oval oil on canvas75 x 61cmThe painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are stable and secure. There are a few small losses and scuffs to the surface caused by impact. The varnish has considerably yellowed with age. There are areas of overpaint in the background and reinforcing the sitter’s hair.

Lot 157

Follower of Benjamin von Block Portrait of Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705) standing full length in armour, his hand on the Imperial orb and a crown beyondoil on canvas, unframed202 x 113cmThe paint layer has a history of loss and flaking evident in the surface. There are numerous areas which are currently in a vulnerable condition with raised areas of flaking and scattered losses. Historic losses are evident across the surface which have been secured by lining. The lining process appears to have used excessive heat with stabilise the paint layer, which has been slightly softened. In some areas, impasto appears smooth. There is extensive overpaint present across the surface, and probably more than one campaign. Some of the overpaint is applied with a broad brush, for example large areas of the armour and the orb held by the sitter. It is unclear if the overpaint covers original paint, or covering extensive losses. Despite the damage, the sitters face appears in reasonably good condition, without the extensive overpaint seen elsewhere. The varnish is dull and uneven with glossy patches across the surface. In the lower half of the picture there are splashes of house paint and other accretions.

TWO CIRCULAR ANGLO-GALLIC ENAMEL ROUNDELS 14TH CENTURY OR LATER Each with a fully caparisoned jousting knight; charging left and right and their arms being 'gules a bend d'or' and 'or a lion rampant sable armed gules' respectively; each subject contained in two distinct formal circular borders, one with plain colours; the other floral approximately 8.65cm diameter Saleroom Notice: Please note, the description has been updated and differs from the printed catalogue. These roundels are dated 14th century or later. "TWO CIRCULAR ANGLO-GALLIC ENAMEL ROUNDELS 14TH CENTURY OR LATER" Provenance: Formerly Lord Carmichael of Skirling collection, sold Sotheby & Co, New Bond Street, 8-10th June 1926, lot 412 and catalogued as; "Two medallions, decorated in champleve enamel, with knights in full armour on horseback, gilt, one medallion has a border of circles, the other a border with scrolling foliage with white flowers...English or French XIV century" (£420) This lot is sold with two reports. The first from Dr Peter Northover, an analysis and metallography report from November 2010 concludes; "The condition of the enamel, both in terms of its inhomogeneity and gas porosity, and its degradation are fully consistent with the proposed 14th century date. ...We may therefore accept these roundels as historic and authentic". The second from Sr Andrew Shortland, Cranfield University 2010 states: "The roundels have some of the characteristics of early enamels, with the correct range of colouring elements in most cases. However, they do not find an easy compositional fit with the enamels known from the three papers cited. There are three possible interpretations that might account for this:1.These are early enamels from an unknown workshop which is operating with different recipes to those so far identified;2. The roundels have been extensively restored sometime ago, mixing early enamels with later restorations containing modern colorants;3. They are a later production, perhaps from the nineteenth century. The presence of later colouring elements makes option 1 seem the least likely and can probably be ruled out. It is hard to determine purely compositionally whether 2 or 3 is the most possible. It is possible that the application of more sensitive techniques, either by destructive sampling for SEM-WDS or quasi-non-destructive techniques such as LA-ICPMS might reveal more. Similarly, a more comprehensive survey of the roundels to attempt to identify large areas of restoration might distinguish between 2 and 3. However, this present short study is unable to determine with any certainty precisely how much of the enamels dates from the early period and how extensive later additions might be."

Frank, 1910, 45 (of 53) numbered playing cards, pen & ink and watercolour, each with finely drawn and painted scene or figure related to the suit, 4 suits with unique suit signs, representing: USA (star in a circle, cards 1-11 & 14); United Kingdom (crown, cards 8-11, 14 & 20); France (Legion of Honour medal or 'cross', cards 1-11, 14 & 20, complete); German Empire (yellow shield with Empire flag colours, cards 1-11, 14 & 20, complete), plus an unnumbered card depicting a lion with all 4 suit signs ('Boss' card), every card captioned 'Copyright, February 1910' in ink manuscript, each '14' card with national emblem or arms, each '20' card with national flag, dusty, a trifle toned, some light finger-soiling (mainly to edges), UK 9 toned and spotted, square corners, versos plain white, each card 127 x 76 mm, contained in contemporary two-part box, together with the same cards published as 'Drill Playing Cards' by the New Playing Card Co, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., the complete deck of 53 chromolithographed playing cards, lightly dusty, rounded corners, versos a white and blue copy of the Boss card design, each card 89 x 65 mm, original two-part box (defective) with original rules booklet, box and booklet with 'Copyright by E.M. Frank, Chicago, July 1910', plus a 149 page book containing the original ink manucript rules and directions, with 53 pages depicting the individual playing card designs, in pen & black ink, watercolour, and gold paint, each captioned, the book titled: 'Drill and Drill-Conquest, Two Society Card games, composed ... designed by E.M. Frank, Chicago, Ill., U.S.A., Copyright February 24 1910', the front free endpaper with ink manuscript inscription: 'Chicago, April 20 1910, This is the book referred to in a certain contract between the undersigned ...' and with three signatures including that of Edward M. Frank, black cloth boards, oblong 8vo, in original two-part box, and with another part-pack of the published Drill Playing CardsQTY: (4)NOTE:Provenance: Collection of Dudley Ollis. An original card game with detailed and handsomely drawn cards. The suits comprise 13 cards each, numbered 1-11, 14 and 20. Each suit follows the same pattern of designs, for example each 8 card shows a knight in armour on horseback, and the 7 cards are all national personification female figures. Several cards depict soldiers in uniform: 1 cards are lieutenants, 2s are captains, 4s are colonels etc. The accompanying book was clearly that used when Frank sold his card game design to the New Playing Card Co., and is full of his directions and designs in a very neat ink manuscript hand. The bold and handsome card designs in the book and on the original cards are sadly not done justice to by the very average chromolithography of the published card game. The game rules themselves are extensive and fairly complex - even including a Drill Vocabulary - which, together with the uninspiring reproductions of the designs may explain why the game apparently never became popular.

Thomas Ryan PRHA (1929-2021) “Imeacht na nIarlai, 1608,” (The Departure of O’Neill out of Ireland,)  1958 watercolour on paper,  Signed l.r. ‘Thomas Ryan’ and inscribed l.l. ‘Lrucacht na nIarlaí, approx. 30cms x 40cms (12” x 16”). (1) A detailed study for Tom Ryan’s large oil painting, The Departure of O’Neill out of Ireland, this sparkling watercolour is inscribed ‘Lrucacht na nIarlaí’ (‘The Earls Misery’). A spirited work of art, it depicts a momentous event in Irish history, when, in 1607, a group of Irish aristocrats , led by Rory O’Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, and Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, boarded ship at Rathmullan, bound for the Continent. Their flight into exile symbolized the end of Gaelic Ireland, and the triumph of the Tudor conquest. Conceived in the grand style, with lances, suits of armour and banners, Ryan’s painting recalls the work of Velasquez and Titian. In the foreground, people lament the departure of the Earls, while a monk raises his hand in blessing. Having grown up in Limerick, the city where Sean Keating had first studied art, Thomas Ryan began his training under the local teacher Richard Butcher. He then enrolled in the National College of Art in Dublin, where his teachers included Keating and Maurice MacGonigal. Elected President of the Royal Hibernian Academy, in the 1980’s he was instrumental in the building of the RHA Gallagher Gallery on Ely Place. His early paintings from the 1950’s are strong Realist canvases, depicting scenes such as his mother standing at the kitchen sink, or a jazz trumpeter. Always an ambitious artist, aged 28, Ryan painted The Departure of O’Neill out of Ireland. Another canvas by him depicted the interior of the GPO during the Easter Rising. Always a sensitive painter, in later years, while he received many commissions for portraits of members of the clergy, judiciary and leading business figures, it was his still-lifes of flowers, atmospheric studies of interiors such as Marshes Library, and watercolours such as this, that form perhaps his most telling legacy in Irish art. This watercolour sketch for The Flight of O’Neill Out of Ireland shows the artist’s development of the complex composition. The finished painting was completed the year after the 350th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls, and displayed in the State Apartments, Dublin Castle. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

Garret Morphey (Attributed.) 1655 – c. 1716 "Portrait, possibly of a member of the Devonsher family of Kilshannig," O.O.C., c. 1700, approx. 134cms x 107cms (53" x 42"), in later gilt frame. (1) Wearing a tall wig, and metal cuirass beneath his coat, the man depicted in this portrait stands, hand on hip, with a confident, even pugnacious expression. The pommel of a sword can be seen at his waist, while his left hand rests on a helmet. Judging by the style of the painting and the costume, this portrait can be dated to around 1700. Although the artist has not been identified, the painting bears many of the attributes of a work by Garret Morphey, an artist who had close connections with Ireland. Many of Morphey’s portraits were of members of families such as the Plunketts, Nettervilles, Talbots, Nugents and O’Neills, and he often depicted men wearing armour, as in his portrait of Sir Edward Villiers at Dromana House in Co. Waterford. Associated with the Devonsher family of Kilshannig in north County Cork, the present portrait may depict Jonas Devonsher, or his father Thomas, who married Sarah Weber in 1662. Weber’s father had acquired land at Kilshannig, and Thomas and Sarah settled there. Jonas’s son, Abraham, went on to build a Palladian house at Kilshannig. Designed by Davis Ducart and embellished with plasterwork by the Lafrancini brothers, it is one of the finest Georgian country houses in Ireland. Provenance:  Kilshannig House, Co. Cork, formerly home of the Devonsher Family. Dr. Peter Murray 2025
