STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) - British Royal Charity World Premiere Empire Day Poster, 1980 - The British Royal Charity World Premiere (or "Empire Day") poster is one of the rarest pieces of marketing material for The Empire Strikes Back and the Star Wars franchise as a whole. Designed by Eddie Paul of FEREF with finished artwork by Ralph McQuarrie, the image of Vader's head is adapted from McQuarrie's distinctive "Vader in Flames" design that collectors will recognise from the film's crew patches. As stated on the poster, "Empire Day" took place in London on the 20th May 1980. This date was very close to the original British Empire Day held annually on Queen Victoria's birthday (24th May) between 1916 and 1958.The 20th Century Fox marketing department took full advantage of the film's release date as an army of Stormtroopers - in Jeeps and on foot - took to the streets of London, holding placards of this poster to build up the crowd's already heightened excitement for the much-anticipated sequel.Presented unrestored with a couple of minor surface creases (in the red under the date and under Vader's right eye), some very subtle discolouration to the surrounding whites, and some minor handing wear including a 2 cm tear on the bottom border. Dimensions: 57 cm x 41 cm (22.25" x 16.25")Condition: Fine+Artist: Eddie Paul, Ralph McQuarrieVAT Status: M

WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) - US One-Sheet Poster, 1953 - Linen-Backed - This classic 1953 adaptation of H. G. Wells' sci-fi novel mirrored the political climate of 1950s America as the country became embedded in its Cold War with Russia and the threat of communism. The indestructible red army (in this case Martians) invade a small town in California with the aim of dominating the world. The unattributed artwork on this US One-Sheet omits the now iconic Martian spaceships instead opting to tease the hand of the Martians themselves.Conservation linen-backed with heavy discolouration (particularly the reds) and poor restoration. There is a tape mark under the Martian hand as well as various areas around the border. There are some small areas of paper loss around the border but the main image remains unaffected. Dimensions: 104 cm x 69 cm (41" x 27")Condition: FairArtist: Unknown ArtistVAT Status: M

Lot 922

Thomas Remnant Charleton (1756-1849) watercolour, Panorama of Bath, mounted on to two card boards, total size 23 x 64cm. The following 38 lots are taken from a substantial 19th century album which has been in the possession of the same family as the artists featured. These works have not been previously seen and colours are fresh as the day they were painted over 160 years ago. The majority of the works were executed by Thomas Remnant Charleton with a smaller number by his daughter Sophia Katherine and some by other hands. Thomas Remnant Charleton was the son of Major George 'Paddy' Charleton, born on Jersey in 1756. A different family album written by his grand daughter relates his career: 'Appointed a cadet at Woolwich on the 1st April 1768, promoted to second lieutenant the 17th June 1772. Embarked with the two companies of artillery for North America in June 1775, joined the army under the command of marquis Cornwallis at the Cove of Cork, Ireland....on 2nd Sept 1776 the army from South America joined General Sir William Howe at Staten Island, served on Long Island, employed in the battery of Hillgate, at the taking of New York, at the battle of White Plains and at Rhode Island, he was at the expedition up the Hudson River under Colonel Bird....Embarked with the army for the Pennsylvania campaign, was at the Battle of Brandywine and employed on the batteries at the taking of Mud Island on the Delaware; remained in the field until January 1778, when the army retired into winter quarters, Delaware.....Served in the campaign of South Carolina, was at the taking of Charlestown, at the evacuation of that place, returned with the army to New York; was promoted to Captain Lieutenant 1st December 1782...embarked for England in Nov. 1783...Was promoted to a Company 26th Nov 1792 and was ordered to Newfoundland where he commanded the garrison for some time. Was appointed Major in the army 1st March 1794 and Lieutenant General 1st Jan 1798. Promoted to a majority in the Regiment the 16th July 1799 when he returned to England and was appointed to the command of the artillery in British North America in 1800 under the command of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Kent and proceeded to Halifax where he arrived in June....' Further promotions followed up to General in 1837. He retired to Bath where he lived at 8 Lansdown Place East, and died there in May 1849 aged 93. The works in this collection were painted in his retirement, whilst in his eighties, many taken from famous prints of the day or studies from his local area in Bath. They demonstrate a remarkable second string to his bow, following an exceptional military career. Basically very good original condition with good bold colours. Some foxing spots as seen in the images. Very slight creases to the corners. The paper appears to be stuck to the original card and not done at all later date in our opinion.
