ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES FREDERICK DE BROCKTORFF (GERMAN/DANISH 1775 - 1850), FRONT VIEW OF THE GOVERNORS PALACE IN THE CITY OF VALLETTA, ISLAND OF MALTA watercolour on papermounted, framed and under glassimage size 37cm x 55cm, overall size 61cm x 73cmNote: Brocktorff had fought in the Napoleonic wars as an infantry officer with the forces of the Electorate of Hanover before moving to England after 1809. When he settled in Malta in circa 1810, he opened an art studio in Valletta where his business prospered and his four artist sons eventually joined to continue to enrich the family enterprise. Brocktorff, who painted mainly for visitors and servicemen, captured whatever was interesting to foreign eyes, such as St Johns Co-Cathedral, the Governors Palace, the Auberges, the Public Library and magnificent views of the Grand Harbour. He also portrayed various classes of Maltese society for the benefit of English buyers who were curious to know how the Maltese lived. Two albums containing a total of 89 watercolours by Brocktorff are located at the National Library of Malta. One of them had originally belonged to Frederick Ponsonby, and it was collected in around 1829 or 1830 when Ponsonby was Governor of Malta. The other was compiled in around 1849 by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy after he had purchased the watercolours from an auction of the contents of Stowe House. Both albums were acquired by the National Library of Malta in the 1920s, and studies of their contents were published in 2007 and 2008.

During this time he met William Wilson, with whom he exchanged print-making ideas. He served in the police and army during the second world war and continued sketching and printmaking throughout. Notable are the prints he made of the Glasgow blitz. After the war Fleming taught again at Glasgow School of Art and at Hospitalfield, Arbroath. At this time he moved towards painting, rather than print-making, producing landscapes, harbours and portraits both in oil and watercolour. Fleming was principal of Gray's School of Art between 1954 and 1971. He continued in printmaking after his retirement. He died at Aberdeen.

LOUIS-ROBERT CARRIER-BELLEUSE (FRENCH 1848 - 1913), MUSSEL GATHERERS, SAINT-MALO, BRITTANY oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso framed image size 33cm x 70cm, overall size 51cm x 88cm Label verso: Tom Bell Fine Art, Troon Note: this lot includes a conservation report and confirmation of signature. Note 2: Born in Paris on 4 July 1848, Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse grew up watching his father, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, earn his living as a practicing artist. The elder Carrier-Belleuse entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840 under the auspices of sculptor David d’Angers, but he elected to study decorative arts at the Petite Ecole shortly thereafter, perhaps because he felt that it would offer a better livelihood for his growing family. When Louis-Robert was only two years old, his father accepted a job in England where he designed ceramics and metalwork models for the Wedgwood factory, among others. This interlude lasted five years, until 1855 when the family returned to France where Albert-Ernest found work in Napoleon III’s massive urban renewal projects for Paris. Throughout these years, the young Louis-Robert studied with his father, absorbing his basic art education through direct observation, on-the-job training, and paternal instruction. Eventually, Louis-Robert entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he focused his studies on painting. Under the direction of Alexandre Cabanel and Gustave Boulanger, two of the most successful painters of the era, Carrier-Belleuse mastered the academic techniques of drawing from plaster casts of famous sculptures, and in due course, the live model. In 1870, just as the Second Empire was coming to its disastrous conclusion, Carrier-Belleuse made his debut at the annual Salon. The eruption of the Franco-Prussian War disrupted life significantly; although it is unknown whether or not the 22-year-old Carrier-Belleuse served in the French Army, most young men performed their military duty at this age. As a result of the war—and the internecine bloodshed of the Commune—life in Paris was fundamentally changed. The city had been beaten and battered, and the political divisions among the citizenry were both painful and raw. The arts community was no exception. Traditionalists who supported the academic canon were impatient with the increasing number of artists who advocated for a fresh approach to painting as well as new venues in which to exhibit their work. Carrier-Belleuse, while not as radical as the Impressionists, nevertheless found his voice as a “painter of modern life” to cite Charles Baudelaire’s famous phrase. Like Constantin Guys, the painter that Baudelaire held up as his example, Carrier-Belleuse captured the daily life of Parisian streets. His images included people from all walks of life, whether it illustrated workingmen delivering sacks of flour in Porteurs de farine of 1885, or casual strollers on the grand boulevards as in The Bookseller of 1881. In both of these images, the painter’s academic education is obvious in the clear delineation of the human body, but his choice of urban subject matter suggests the influence of Degas or Steinlen, especially in the seemingly random combinations of anonymous figures going about their daily routine. Carrier-Belleuse also occasionally painted amusing genre scenes such as The Animal Sculptor. This undated work depicts the sculptor (perhaps Carrier-Belleuse himself) in his studio trying to grab a bite of lunch while the plaster swan on his worktable appears to be interrupting him. Nearby, two live swans observe this action, presumably a bit miffed that they are not being fed as well. The joke is purely visual, and it remains comical today precisely because it does not depend on any external narrative. What is even more intriguing is the compositional structure that Carrier-Belleuse created; the standard two-point perspective grid is offset by a technique that Degas often used of undermining the spatial organization by drawing parallel lines that will not meet at the hypothetical horizon. In 1889, Carrier-Belleuse accepted an appointment as artistic director of the Hippolyte Boulenger & Cie faience manufactory at Clichy-le-Roi where he designed new forms for the earthenware sculpture and pottery. That same year, Hippolyte Boulenger opened a retail store at 18 rue Paradis in Paris to showcase the new designs being produced. In fact, the building itself functioned as a ‘catalogue’ of the ceramic tiles from Choisy-le-Roi. The year 1889 was momentous. Not only did Carrier-Belleuse begin his tenure at Clichy-le-Roi, but he also received a Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle. In addition, his contributions to France’s art and culture were recognized with the Legion of Honor Medal. At this time, he also began to focus increasingly on sculpture, particularly portrait busts. One of the more curious developments of Carrier-Belleuse’s career was the establishment of his reputation as a sculptor in Central American nations. This appears to have begun with a commission for the tomb of the liberal reformer and modernizer of Guatemala, President Justo Rufino Barrios, who died in April 1885. This in turn led to a large sculptural group designed as a National Monument for Costa Rica in 1890. Located in San José’s Parque Nacional near the Congress Building, the bronze monument commemorates the heroes of Costa Rican freedom. When it was unveiled during Independence Day celebrations on September 15, 1895, the Costa Rican people saw seven figures, five of them women. These allegorical figures represented the nations of Central America—Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—each carrying some type of weapon to defend her sovereignty against foreign invaders. The sixth figure is the American military expansionist, William Walker, who attempted to annex Central America to the United States in 1855-57. Carrier-Belleuse depicted him hiding his face from the female defenders of freedom. The seventh figure, a fallen soldier, serves as a universal reminder of the human cost of warfare. The last decade of Carrier-Belleuse’s career was devoted primarily to sculpture and large-scale faience projects. When he died on 15 June 1913, his passing was noted not only in France, but also in the newspapers in London and New York.

I would be unwise if I rebuild the Leipheim or the Gunzburg ones… the enemy will very likely march tonight trying to reach the Brenz..´ further indicating the military plan for the day after `..I will not dare attacking such position frontally tomorrow morning before having developed your right wing…my presence will allow you to support the right wing and delay for long the enemy attempts while we wait for the arrival of General Moreau army..´ A letter of very interesting military content. MONTGOMERY B.L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A highly unusual book signed, being a hardback edition of The Memoirs of Field-Marshal The Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, K.G., First edition published by Collins, London, 1958, signed ('Montgomery of Alamein F.M.') by Montgomery in fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper and dated November 1958 in his hand. Additionally signed by Spike Milligan (1918-2002) Irish actor and comedian. Milligan has signed his name in bold black ink, also to the front free endpaper, beneath a statement in his hand, in full, 'I wrote - enclosing this book, saying - I had done his bidding during the war - would he now do mine and sign this book - within 48 hours it was signed and returned'. To one of the inside pages of illustrations, featuring photographs of Montgomery's father and mother, and one of the young Monty aged nine years, Milligan has added a few brief annotations, making disparaging remarks about Montgomery's parents and the observation 'OK' alongside the photograph of the juvenile future Field Marshal. Lacking the dust jacket and with some light overall age wear and minor foxing and staining, G Spike Milligan served as a signaller (Gunner Milligan 954024) in D Battery (later 19 Battery), 56th Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery, during World War II. The unit saw action as part of the First Army in the North African campaign and then in the succeeding Italian campaign. Milligan was appointed lance bombardier and was about to be promoted to bombardier when he was wounded in action at the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 and subsequently hospitalised.

PIUS III: (1439-1503) Pope of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 22nd September to 18th October 1503. At just twenty-six days, Pius III had one of the shortest pontificates in papal history. An exceptionally rare D.S., F[ranciscus]. C[ardinalis] de Piccolomineis, as Papal Legate to Rome and the Papal States, one page (vellum), slim oblong folio (32 x 12 cm), St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, 5th June 1464, in Latin. The manuscript document, issued in the name of Pope Pius II, and penned in an elegant script, states that the recipient's letters 'in which you have indicated to us certain suspicions cast by you….and also an account of what has been reported of Jacopo Piccinino' have been read, commenting 'We, beloved child, think that suspicions of this kind are vain, but we praise you for being cautious' and further continuing 'the care and diligence in averting and rejecting the plans of the malicious should always be praised, and We who are the ones who protect and defend you as we desire….Therefore, concerning the Corsicans who are trying to enter into your state, we ordered the governor of our Patrimony to seize them and punish them according to their demerits'. The document also states, 'As regards Piccinino, although he has received the….stipend from the King [Ferdinand I of Naples] and his Serenity needs his services for the establishment of his kingdom and his state, and as we have been informed he does not wish to let him go, nevertheless we shall not fail to protect you where necessary…..Our beloved son Antonio [Piccolomini], Duke of Amalfi……will soon arrive, who will station a part of our army in the territory of your country….' Adding that the Duke has been commanded to defend and protect their land and subjects if necessary. Autographs of Pope Pius III, the nephew of Pius II, are of the utmost rarity and the present document is also of historical significance for its references to Jacopo Piccinino and Antonio Piccolomini. Some light overall damp staining and two very small holes to the body of the document, the text remaining clear and entirely legible. Some traces of former mounting to the verso and with the (slightly indistinct) circular red stamp of the College heraldique de France to the verso. About VGThe recipient of the present document is unclear, however one valid candidate would be Marino Marzano (1420-1494) Italian nobleman, Grand Admiral of the Kingdom of Naples, and an ally of Pope Pius II. Pius II (1405-1464) Pope of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States 1458-64. A Renaissance humanist, and member of the House of Piccolomini, Pius II had achieved fame as an author in Latin before becoming Pope. Jacopo Piccinino (1423-1465) Italian condottiero, nobleman and feudal lord. In 1450 Piccinino became a General in the Venetian Army and in 1463 participated in the dynastic wars which tore apart the Kingdom of Naples. In 1465 he was called to Naples to receive the position as viceroy of Abruzzi and serve as leader of King Ferdinand I of Naple's troops, however he was treacherously arrested on the King's orders and condemned to death.Antonio Piccolomini (1435-1492) Duke of Amalfi. Italian soldier and politician. Brother of Francesco Piccolomini, the future Pope, and a nephew of Pius II from whom the Duke received numerous favours and investitures. Appointed Lieutenant General of Men-at-Arms of the Kingdom of Naples, at the time of the present document the Duke was engaged in eliminating the last resistances of Jacopo Piccinino and participated in various military campaigns involving the Kingdom of Naples.Ferdinand I (1424-1494) King of Naples 1458-94, one of the most influential and feared monarchs in Europe at the time and an important figure in the Italian Renaissance. Pius II had convened the Congress of Mantua in 1459 in order to plan a war against the Ottoman Turks, Christendom's common enemy, and in January 1460 the Pope proclaimed the official crusade. However, by November 1463, little progress had been made and the Pope, in an effort to organise the crusade himself, invited all of the Christian nobility to join. The Venetians immediately agreed, as did George Kastriot Skanderberg, leader of the Albanian resistance, who declared war on the Ottomans on 27th November 1463. The Pope did not succeed in securing the support of estranged France; the Duke of Burgundy breaking his promises; Milan was engrossed in an attempt to seize Genoa; and Florence cynically advised the Pope to let the Turks and the Venetians to wear each other out. Pius II was aware that he was nearing his end, and his malady most likely prompted the feverish impatience with which on 18th June 1464, less than two weeks after the present document was issued, he assumed the cross and departed for Ancona to conduct the crusade in person. Provenance: Previously contained in the archives of the College heraldique de France, a leading organisation in the studies of noble genealogy that was created in 1841 by Claude Drigon, Marquis of Magny (1796-1879). Its large collections, estimated to be 350,000 documents (including 60,000 charters from the 11th - 14th centuries) were dispersed at auction at the Hotel Drouot in 1935-37.

CLAUDE FLIGHT (BRITISH 1881-1955) ⊕ SPEEDsigned CLAUDE FLIGHT upper left; numbered 11/50 lower leftlinocut printed in cobalt blue, yellow ochre, vermilion and Prussian blue on buff oriental laid paper 22.5 cm by 30cm; 9 x 11 1/4 in (with margins) 50 x 55cm; 19 3/4 x 21 3/4in (framed) Property from an English Private Collector Literature Claude Flight, Lino-cuts: A Hand-book of Linoleum-cut Colour Printing, London, 1927, illustrated on the frontispiece Stephen Coppel, Linocuts of the Machine Age, London, 1995, p. 74, illustration of another example from the same edition London is itself a Futurist City! Look at this brilliant-hued motor buses, these enormous glaring posters (Filippo Marinetti) Printed in 1922, Flight was instrumental in the burgeoning interest in linocut printing after the First World War, and selected the present image to adorn the frontispiece of his first linocut textbook, Lino-cuts: A Hand-book of Linoleum-cut Colour Printing published in 1927 while teaching linocut classes at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, London Before the War Flight had attended Heatherley's School of Art, where he met his first wife. During the War he served in France as Captain in the Army Service Corps, there he purchased a neolithic chalk cave dug deep into the banks of the Seine near Paris (it subsequently became his regular summer retreat, to which he would invite his art students). In 1922 he married again, this time to Edith Lawrence, already an established artist who worked in various media, including linocuts. Encouraged by Lawrence, Flight began to explore the medium for himself, finding it a compelling format for illustrating contemporary subject matter. He argued that the linocut was the medium of choice because it came with no historical baggage, there were no restrictions on what it could represent and linoleum was readily available, simple to work and easy to print up. In short it was the modern medium for the modern age and very much of the moment, offering the potential to introduce contemporary art to the home or the flat of the ordinary person. In like manner, influenced by the Italian Futurists, Flight considered it the perfect way to capture the machine age and metropolitan life, expressing through his subject matter speed, dynamism and energy as in the present work. Flight noted: 'Traffic problems, transport problems; everybody is on the rush either for work or pleasure... the Painter cannot but be influenced by the restlessness of his surroundings' (The Original Colour Print Magazine, vol. 2, 1925). The course Flight taught on linocut printing at the Grosvenor School between 1926 and 1930 and subsequently at his French cave was eagerly attended, attracting many keen adherents who became masters of the medium. His students included the likes of British artists Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews, Australians Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme, New Zealander Frank Weitzel and Swiss artist Lill Tschudi, all of whom created a remarkable body of printed work, and are collectively known as the Grosvenor School of artists. Not surprisingly, Flight was a very popular teacher. Eveline Syme recalled: 'Sometimes in his classes it is hard to remember that he is teaching so complete is the camaraderie between him and his students. He treats them as fellow artists rather than pupils, discusses with them and suggests to them, never dictates or enforces. At the same time he is so full of enthusiasm for his subject, and his ideas are so clearly reasoned, that it is impossible for his students not to be influenced by him.' ('Claude Flight and his Teaching', The Recorder, no. 3, September 1929). With his zeal for the medium, Flight promoted linocuts in a series of exhibitions he organised in the inter-War years, including eight annual British Linocut Exhibition shows at the Redfern Gallery (1929-31) and the Ward Gallery (1933-37). In collaboration with the Redfern Gallery, in the 1930s Flight and his students also arranged Linocut exhibitions as far afield as America, Canada, China and Australia. Executed on very thin semi-transparent ‘oriental’ / handmade(?) paper glued along the top edge to the artists’ original separate sheet of yellow washed backing paper which has been taped to the backboard at the top left and right corners. Some slight handling marks and time staining to the paper, notable along the bottom edge / towards the lower left corner, hidden by the mount. Overall this work is in very good original condition. The work is framed under glass.
