Augusta, Joseph, Greta Hort, & Zdeněk Burian. Prehistoric Animals. Illustrated under the direction of the author by Zdeněk Burian. Translated by Dr. Greta Hort. London: Spring Books, [1956].Folio. Original buff, heavy-grain cloth, titles to spine and Stegosaurus design to upper board in brown. With the dust jacket. 60 lithographic plates of which 31 are in colour. Lower corner of the binding knocked, which has also slightly creased the corner of the text block and the jacket, spine rolled. A very good copy in the bright jacket that is lightly rubbed at the extremities with a few nicks and short closed splits. First English language edition of this vibrantly illustrated work, originally published in Prague under the title Tiere der Urzeit in the same year. Rare in the dust jacket in such nice condition.Between the 1930s and 1960s "the foremost painter of dinosaur restorations was Zdeněk Burian (1905-1981). His canvasses were used to illustrate a number of popular books on prehistoric life by Joseph Augusta, and in the late 1950s and 1960s these were translated into English and widely circulated." (Ashworth, Paper Dinosaurs 48). Though his dinosaurs are no longer considered anatomically accurate, Burian was highly respected in his time and his paintings were widely reproduced and copied, often without acknowledgement. In 2017 the first dinosaur discovered in the Czech Republic was named in his and Augusta's honour, Burianosaurus augustai.

Ches. R.); together with a related cap badge, contact marks, very fine or better (3) £120-£160 --- Provenance: David Boniface Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, September 2008. Thomas Lloyd was born at Newton Heath, Lancashire, and attested for the Cheshire Regiment at Stockport, whilst residing at Bredbury. He served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War initially on the Western Front from 26 June 1915, before proceeding to Mesopotamia, and was killed in action at Fallahiya on 5 April 1916, during the relief of Kut operations. Sergeant J. H. Wheeldon, a fellow native of Bredbury, wrote to Lloyd’s mother a few days later: ‘Your son Tommy was killed in action on 5th April and died in a few seconds. He did not suffer, thank God. He died like a hero in the face of the dirty dogs the enemy. I was only a few yards away from him. If God spares me to come home I will tell all about it. There are only two Bredbury lads here, Private H. Ashworth and myself.’ Sadly Sergeant Wheeldon was not spared, dying in June 1916. Lloyd has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. Sold with copied research.

D.S.C. London Gazette 1 August 1944: ‘For outstanding courage, leadership, resource and determination during the assault on Anzio and in subsequent bombardments in support of the Army, and in maintaining an unbroken flow of supplies which accomplished the building up of the beach-head despite bombing, mining and bombardment by shore batteries.’ The following recommendation was extracted from Admiralty records: ‘Recommendations for awards to officers and ratings who have served in L.S.T. (Landing Ship Troops) in the Mediterranean from the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, until the completion of the build-up of the Anzio beach head in April 1944. During the landing operations on the Sicilian and Italian coasts L.S.T. were employed for the first time in large numbers and due to the fine spirit shown by their crews, more than came up to my expectations. During their stay in the Mediterranean these ships have been continuously employed on ferrying troops and stores to the forward areas and can justly claim credit for having kept the Armies fully supplied during these critical months. Their finest achievement has been the build-up of the Anzio beach head where despite enemy bombing, mining and bombardment, stores averaging five to six thousand tons daily have been discharged. Mr Harry Ashworth, Boatswain, R.N., Party “Chain” (2) - Operation Husky, Avalanche & Shingle. Was launched with his party onto Salerno and Anzio beaches with a pontoon causeway. His courage and fearlessness inspired his party of young seamen to work in the causeway in spite of shell-fire and air attacks, extending over a period of 10 and 30 days.’ Harry Ashworth was born on 30 January 1901, at Shardlow, Derby, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 25 August 1916. He served afloat during the war aboard Impregnable and Colossus. Appointed Temporary Boatswain (Acting) on 9 November 1940, Harry Ashworth served aboard H.M.S. Prince Leopold during the commando raid on Vaagso, Norway, in January 1941. He was appointed to H.M.S. Hannibal, base at Algiers, on 12 April 1943, for Sea Transport Duties, and took part in the Sicily and Italy landings. He was invested with his D.S.C. at Buckingham Palace on 16 October 1945, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October 1953. Sold with copied recommendation and record of service.
