(1922-88), 'BRITAIN'S QUEEN OF THE AIR'Given all that could be written about this remarkable aviatrix, the cataloguer turns firstly to Encyclopedia Britannica:'Sheila Scott was born on 27 April 1922 at Worcester, Worcestershire and was a British aviator who broke more than 100 light-aircraft records between 1965 and 1972 and was the first British pilot to fly solo around the world.After attending a Worcester boarding school, Scott became a trainee nurse at Haslar Naval Hospital (1944), where she tended the wounded during World War II. In London she appeared in small roles for theatre, film, and television and worked as a model (1945–59). In 1960 she earned her pilot’s license, bought an old biplane from the Royal Air Force, and won several races, capturing the De Havilland and Jean Lennox Bird trophies for that year. To pay for her flying, she became a demonstrator for Cessna and Piper aircraft.Scott first flew around the world in 1966, covering about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) in 189 flying hours. She set world records when she flew between London and Cape Town (1967) and across the North Atlantic Ocean (1967), the South Atlantic Ocean (1969), and from the Equator to the Equator over the North Pole (1971). After her record polar flight, she made a third around-the-world solo flight, earning her 100th world-class record. She wrote I Must Fly (1968) and On Top of the World (1973; U.S. title Barefoot in the Sky, 1974). [PHOTO ALBUM - P. T. BARNUM SIDESHOW PERFORMERS]A Victorian photo album with twenty-eight cartes de visites of Barnum's sideshow celebrities. Circa 1860s-1880s. A Victorian photo album of red bubble-patterned and embossed leather, with brass and bone bands to boards, a brass clasp, all edges gilt, watered silk endpapers, gilt-stamped "G.R. & Co." Album leaves measure 5 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches (15 x 11 cm); with 28 cartes de visites by various photographers, inserted into album leaves. Wear to extremities, the brass a bit dulled, the leaves with occasional light soiling and toning, with some manuscript annotations in pencil, the cartes de visites generally very good, though some are lightly faded, soiled, or spotted, with occasional manuscript annotations to versos. This Victorian photo album contains twenty-eight cartes de visites of P. T. Barnum's sideshow performers. The album features little people, including Charles S. Stratton ("General Tom Thumb") and Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump, her sister Huldah Pierce Warren Bump ("Minnie Warren"), and George Washington Morrison ("Commodore Nutt"), Charles Decker, and Miss Sophie Schulz. There are also cartes de visites of "The Irish Giant," James Hugh Murphy, the fat man, Frank Williams, "The Siamese Twins" Chang and Eng Bunker (seen with their children), "The Two-Headed Nightingale" Millie and Christine McKoy, The Lucaise Family of albinos, "The Wild Men of Borneo" Waino and Plutanor, "The Aztec Children" Maximo and Bartola, various Bearded Women, such as Delina Rose and Annie Jones, as well as P. Arguably the ultimate Elan derivative, the Sprint arrived in February 1971. Characterised by its 'Big Valve' (126bhp / 113lbft) engine and bold colour schemes, the model was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and 121mph. The Sprint was the final iteration of the Lotus Elan and was marketed between 1971 and 1973. Lotus always intended it to be a distinct model in its own right, rather than a 'Series 5', primarily for marketing purposes, however, the model was dropped by from the Lotus line-up in August of 1973, with the Sprint remaining keenly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.One of circa 856 Lotus Elan Sprint Drophead Coupes built, this example was built in April 1972 and originally supplied new to the USA and as such, is a US market car, ordered in Lotus Yellow (L07) over Cirrus White (L04) with the Talbot-Aztec Gold band. In more recent times the Sprint has been repatriated to the UK in 2014 and subsequently, it has been the subject of restoration and a repaint in 2015 at a cost of some £4,080. Thankfully, the Sprint still wears the attractive classic original shades of Lotus Yellow & Cirrus White with the Gold accent around the waistline with the typically Black vinyl interior, seats and door cards.Additionally, in 2015 the Sprint was the subject of some work by RJ Motors of Bideford in Devon. They fitted a roll cage and overhauled the engine. The latter included replacing the water pump, main and big end bearings and polishing the crankshaft. The Sprint has also been fitted with a fast road clutch and a sports manifold.
