Henry Richard Graves (1818–1882)     "Portrait of a Boy in Kilt with Fishing Rod" c. 1860, O.O.C., approx. 55” x 39” (1) Dressed in a tailored brown suit, with jacket, white shirt, red cravat, waistcoat and kilt, a boy in his early teens prepares to go fishing. The boy stands before a high wooded bank, holding a fishing rod. To the left can be seen an extensive landscape, with mountains overlooking a river. Although the scene depicted has not been identified, and may be generic, it is can be read as a Scottish scene. In his right hand, the boy has the fishing hook held between thumb and forefinger. The kilt suggests a Scottish provenance, an idea reinforced by another related portrait, probably of the same boy, that shows him with a ‘Balmoral Bonnet’. Recent cleaning of this work has revealed the signature ‘Henry Graves’. Born in 1818, the portrait painter Henry Richard Graves was a successful portrait painter in London in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The son of Thomas North, 2nd Baron Graves and Lady Mary Paget, (sister of the Marquess of Anglesey), he initially worked as a clerk for the India Board. In 1843 he married Henrietta Wellesley, and soon after began to establish himself as a portrait painter, exhibiting over seventy works at the Royal Academy between 1846 and 1881. His clients including members of the Royal Family and the Aristocracy. Many of his sitters had connections with Ireland, and, as with this work, he was particularly adept at painting portraits of children: his 1850 portrait of the young Lady Florence Paget (1842–1881), later Marchioness of Hastings, is at Plas Newydd, while his portrait of Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest-Stewart, later 6th Marquess of Londonderry, painted a decade later, is at Mount Stewart. His 1873 portrait of Charlotte Marion Baird, Countess of Enniskillen, is at Florence Court, in Co. Fermanagh. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

Lot 846

An exceptional low-mileage Continental GT finished in a fabulous colour and trim combination.  As the Millennium dawned, the surviving luxury icons of the British car industry headed in very different directions. Rolls-Royce aimed for stratospheric ostentation and for the first time, lost the patronage of the British Royal Family, whilst their order books were filled by oligarchs and OPEC members. Whilst Aston Martin’s achingly beautiful cars were pitted against Ferrari, favouring sleekly modern interiors as they dropped the acres of highly polished woodwork. Under Volkswagen’s stewardship since 1998, Bentley still produced the Continental R and T coupés, the incomparable Azure and the class-leading Arnage saloon. Waiting in the wings however, was a car that was to set the industry standard for luxury grand touring with pace for years to come.Unveiled in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Continental GT’s purposeful stance was tempered by an elegant rear, with a side profile so refined it remains virtually unchanged today. Upholstered in the finest leather and for those enthusiasts who still stuck with the brand, the woodwork was exquisite. The chrome switchgear exuded quality, like the snick of a Cartier lighter and the whole car was underpinned by the electronics and engineering of the famously reliable Volkswagen/Audi family. Utilising modern production techniques, thereby considerably reducing the labour content and consequently the build cost, it exposed the car to an entirely different and much wider customer base.A huge success, the Crewe-built car's statistics were impressive with twin-turbo VAG 6-litre W12 engines, developed in the VW Phaeton and stillborn W12 sports car, producing 552bhp and 479lb/ft of torque. This prodigious output was fed through a 6-speed automatic box from the new Audi A8 and distributed by the Quattro four-wheel drive system. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 196mph were remarkable numbers for a car of this stature and level of comfort. Most customers eschewed Bentley's traditional dark colours in favour of the company's new range of lighter hues, which really suited the Continental's elegant lines, as is clearly evident in this attractive example. Finished in in Neptune Blue over light tan leather and Burr Oak veneers, it was supplied new by Broughtons of Cheltenham on 28th July 2004 to the first of five former keepers. As is common with Bentleys of this era, the service book shows early main dealer maintenance followed by specialist attention and the receipts on file from noted marque experts, Balmoral of Worcester, detail the most recent works. The engine and gearbox were serviced on 24th July 2024, a mere 104 miles ago and the odometer reading, at the time of cataloguing, states a mileage of 33,863. The car is presented to auction with the normal dealer book packs, maintenance receipts and an advisory-free MOT Certificate valid until 23rd April 2026.Keenly estimated and the perfect choice for those who prefer luxurious reliability, serious performance, and the undoubted cachet of travelling behind the 'Winged B'.Specification Make: BENTLEY Model: CONTINENTAL GT Year: 2004 Chassis Number: SCBCE63W44C023435 Registration Number: LJ04 HCY Transmission: Automatic Engine Number: 005139 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 33863 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Light Tan LeatherClick here for more details and images

This approach was so successful that the Mini ultimately outlived the car launched to replace it – the Metro. ‘P402LOX’ is one of these models in 1997 Balmoral trim. The Balmoral was primarily designed for export markets but was available in the UK upon request. A rare model. The current keeper has owned ‘P402LOX’ for around two years and is the Mini’s 10th keeper to date. Just over 71,500 miles are recorded to date, a mileage which appears to be supported by the MOT history. ‘P402LOX’ has a category “C” (now category “S”) insurance marker lodged against it from 2016. This ended up being a £1,500 repair and has been professionally addressed. ‘P402LOX’ is offered here with NO RESERVE.This rare Mini model presents in bright blue livery which lends it an even more cheerful demeanour. The Balmoral special attributes are all noted. These include the white sill decals and matching bonnet stripes. The so called “Premium” alloy wheels are a “pepper pot” style and are accompanied by marginally extended wheel arch extensions. Balmoral enhancements are even more prominent inside ‘P402LOX,’ too. The upholstery is courtesy of a Burberry-style, multicoloured, checked fabric with light tan accent panels. Other special edition features include a wood veneer dashboard fascia and chrome bezeled instruments. ‘P402LOX’s’ bodywork and paintwork is rated as “average” with the interior judged as “good.”In mechanical terms ‘P402LOX’ is standard 1997 Mini MK VII fare. This means the erstwhile 1275cc multipoint fuel injected unit with a front mounted radiator. In this iteration it originally produced around 62bhp offering a top speed of close to 90mph. Power is fed to the front wheels via a four speed manual transmission. ‘P402LOX’ is reported to have some service history and has been maintained by a mechanic friend of the current owner for the last couple of years. The mechanical aspects of ‘P402LOX’ are reported as “good.”In summary:A rare special edition Mini in final MK VII formComplete with a vibrant colourway and attractive, special edition interiorOffered with numerous other Balmoral attributes
