This lot comes from the Miguel Iglesias collection (Celendín, 1830 - Lima, 1909). He was a Peruvian military officer and politician who was president of Peru between 1882 and 1885, in what is known as the Government of Miguel Iglesias or Regenerating Government of the Peruvian Republic. This government was established in the middle phase of the War of the Pacific, an armed conflict between Chile and the allies Bolivia and Peru (1879-1884). He rose to power by designation of the constituent assembly in 1882, a year after the Chilean occupation of Lima, until he was exiled to Spain in the Peruvian civil war of 1884-1885.A high point of his political-military legacy is the "Grito de Montán", a manifesto in which he proclaimed the necessity of agreeing peace with Chile, even if this implied the cession of the southern provinces; the Treaty in Ancón or Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the republics of Chile and Peru, that put an end to the War of the Pacific and stabilized the post-war relations between them, where Peru ceded territory to Chile; and the Peruvian Civil War, between the Iglesias faction and that of the military leader Andrés Avelino Cáceres. The end of that war meant the exile of Iglesias to the south of Spain, where he moved with his descendants and his important art collection. He returned to his native country when he was elected senator for Cajamarca and died in Lima in 1909. His remains, which had been buried in a mausoleum in Lima's Presbítero Maestro Cemetery, were moved to the Crypt of the Heroes in 2011, within the same cemetery.Despite his return to Peru, his descendants continued to reside in Andalusia. There, his art collection has been preserved and has remained in the family, generation after generation, until the present day. Several lots from this collection are featured in the auction, from 92 to 111.Provenance:- Miguel Iglesias collection, military officer and president of Peru (1882 - 1885). Ayacucho Estate. Peru.- From the end of the 19th century the descendants and the collection moved and settled in the south of Spain until the present day.

A large and impressive Iznik “Damascus” style high footed pottery basin (tazza), Ulisse Cantagalli, Florence, northern Italy, circa 1880, The rounded body rising from a slightly waisted foot to a straight lip, the blue, turquoise blue, green and red painted decoration consisting of bold elegant floral spray, one to the well within a medallion of simplified strapwork picked in red, and a repetition thereof to the cavetto, a thin register of a stylised ropework above, the exterior with bolder and larger floral blooms and serrated saaz leaves borne by a swaying tendril, on white ground, the base with maker’s mark painted in black,42cm. diam., 27cm. highProvenance: Purchased from Lady Manton, Houghton Hall in East Yorkshire over 40 years ago for £100Footnotes: The oversize blooms born by scrolling tendrils, elegantly swaying saaz leaves, and the bold flowers with lobed petals recalls two stunning Iznik works : a blue and white mosque-lamp-shaped vase, and a pottery tile panel. The first dated to the 3rd quarter of 16th century is kept at the David Collection in Copenhagen (inv. 18/1967), the second, circa 1550 - 1650 and attributed to Syria, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. C.5-1909).Our large basin's blooms mirror the decoration of the vase seen on the panel at the Fitzwilliam Museum from which rises an impressive flower bouquet and flanked with cypresses. Its wide scrolling tendril with lobed petals flowers are clearly seen on the blue-and-white vase in Copenhagen. Here, on our lot, Ulisse Cantagalli, like other late 19th century European ceramicists such as Samson, Lachenal, Deck and others, was extremely successful in replicating these mid-16th Ottoman patterns marrying them onto the exterior of this work and rendering the exact tones of the colours seen on the Cambridge panel.Condition Report: With a very fine hairline crack to one side, minor chips to rim

FRANZ LUDWIG HERMANN (GERMAN, 1723-1791) The Dedication of the Temple of Solomon Oil on canvas, 173 x 354cm Signed and inscribed "Invenit & Pinxit Anno MDCCXX"Franz Ludwig Hermann was thought to have been born in Ettal, Bavaria in 1723, although 1710 has also been suggested as his date of birth. Not a great deal has been written about his life, however we do know he was the son of the painter Franz Georg the Younger (1692–1768), with whom he received his artistic training. Ludwig Hermann was educated at the Noble Academy of the Ettal Benedictines. After he married in 1750, he predominantly lived and worked in the Lake Constance region, where he is said to have painted ceiling frescoes in more than twenty churches. Hermann was also a court painter for the Prince-Bishopric of Constance, a small ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire. One of Hermann’s many commissions around lake Constance, was Münsterlingen Abbey. In fact, the only work by Herrmann in a UK public collection is a portrait of Anna Gertrude Hofner, Abbess of Münsterlingen, which is housed in the Bowes Museum, Durham. While a drawing titled The Archangel Michael Banishing Vice, from 1782 is held in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.Monumental in scale, The Dedication of the Temple of Solomon (1760) is one of several known works Hermann created depicting King Solomon. Solomon was the son of David and is believed to be responsible for undertaking construction of the First Temple and home for the Ark of the Covenant on what it thought to be the site of the present-day Temple Mount, where the Dome of the Rock presides in Jerusalem. The painting depicts a fantastical view of the Temple, where early Jewish iconography sits alongside more contemporary Italianate Mannerism. The viewers’ attention is drawn primarily to the large plume of smoke arising from the centre of the picture, which symbolises an overpowering cloud that interrupted the dedication ceremony as a sign from God, indicating Solomon’s success in creating an exalted house and seat for the Ark.Solomon kneels in the foreground as he leads the assembly in prayer, flanked by lion cubs, soldiers and an entourage. The dedication was concluded with musical celebration and sacrifices said to have included twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep.Much of the architectural language in the painting is borrowed from 17th century prints such as those of Jan Luyken (Amsterdam 1649-1712). We see objects associated with historical accounts of the Temple such as the raised sacrificial alter and Brazen Sea, a large bronze sculpture that stood in the Inner Court of the Temple and was formed of twelve oxen beneath a large basin. We can also see the ten bronze lavers present in the composition, which are described in the bible as being placed around the Temple building itself, five on the north side and the other five on the south, being used for washing the hands and feet of the priests before ritual service. The bottom flanks of the picture are filled with attendants, minstrels and perhaps merchants. Whilst the door of the temple is open and we catch a tantalising glimpse inside its gilded entrance hall, which led the way to the most sacred room of the Temple, the Holy of Holies, which in turn housed the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred relic for both Christians and the Israelites, containing the two stone tables bearing the Ten Commandments. Condition Report: Re-lined circa 1990's

Born in Manchester, he studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Edinburgh, where he developed a deep interest in geology. Hibbert was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and was widely respected for his contributions to the understanding of volcanic formations, mineralogy, and historical topography. His most significant works include A Description of the Shetland Islands (1822), which provided one of the earliest geological studies of the region, and History of Extinct Volcanos of the Basin of Neuwied (1832), which focused on the volcanic formations of the Rhine Valley. Hibbert’s observations and methodical approach to geological fieldwork made him an important figure in early 19th-century geology. His interdisciplinary work often blended geology with historical and archaeological insights.Published in 1832, History of Extinct Volcanos of the Basin of Neuwied is a geological study of the extinct volcanic formations in the Neuwied Basin, located along the Rhine River in Germany. Hibbert’s research in this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the geological structure, mineral composition, and historical impact of these ancient volcanic features. His work contributed significantly to the understanding of past volcanic activity in Central Europe and its influence on the region’s landscape.Hibbert’s study was among the earliest English-language works to explore the role of volcanism in shaping the geological features of the Rhine Valley. He combined firsthand field observations with scientific theory, providing detailed descriptions of lava flows, craters, and volcanic rock formations. His documentation helped solidify the emerging discipline of volcanology in the 19th century.
