Lot 258

An autographed poem by John Ruskin (1819-1900), thought to have been written for Adele between 1837-8: 'Ah no - withdraw not thus thy Trust, For less is Woman's bosom grieved, To have been oftentimes deceived, Than once unjust.Distrust not - nor condemn, but leave, Thy hope its rest - thy soul its range, And be it still, though others change, Thine, to believe.Pain is our servant. Doubt is death, Earth's hold of Heaven is all in this -, The heart may bear to lose its bliss, But not its Faith. You know I never own verses - and I suppose your friend will never believe me, Faithfully Hers, J Ruskin.'

ALADDIN (TV SERIES, 1994-1995) - Abu and Iago Original Production Cel, Background and Matching Drawings - An original multi-layer production cel on a key hand-painted production background and matching production drawings featuring Abu and Iago from Walt Disney's television series Aladdin. While the 1992 Aladdin feature film utilised CAPS, Disney's Computer Animation Production System, to digitally colour its animation, the TV series retained the traditional method: hand-drawn pencil animation, followed by inking and painting on acetate cels. This setup showcases that process fully, with visible colour line inking on the cel surface and carefully painted detail on the reverse.Multi-cel arrangements like this allowed for depth and motion to be created economically and efficiently; in this case, the overlapping character elements and coins could be animated independently without redrawing the full composition.Comprised of five hand-painted cel layers placed over an original key hand-painted production background, this setup is a rare survival from the era. It presents a lively, screen-used moment featuring two of Disney's most expressive supporting characters, Abu and Iago.Completing the lot are five drawings that match the production, scene, and frame numbers. Some of the drawings feature studio annotations, including colour callouts. The five cels and drawings bear the original Walt Disney Television Animation seals, verifying their route to market through the studio's official art programme. The lot is accompanied by a The Walt Disney Company certificate of authenticity. There are small patches of paint wear on the background and some minor marks on the cels. Dimensions (multi-layer cel): 27 cm x 32 cm (10.5" x 12.5")Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

PINOCCHIO (1940) - Two Original Production Pencil Drawings of Geppetto and Pinocchio Dancing - A pair of original production full-figure drawings of Geppetto and Pinocchio from Walt Disney's 1940 animated film Pinocchio.Pinocchio was Walt Disney's second animated feature and remains one of the most technically sophisticated films of its era, with shadow work, dimensional character animation, and emotional nuance pushed to new heights. These two drawings, though created for different moments, reflect the care and complexity of that process. This is an opportunity to acquire original artwork from one of the most enduring relationships in Disney history. The first drawing shows Pinocchio mid-step, arms folded, whilst attempting the Hopak dance during the song "I've Got No Strings". It features tonal cues and shadowing in red and green pencil. It is numbered "72" and from "Prod. 2003, Seq. 4.2, Scene 42". The Geppetto artwork shows him stooped and reflective yet full of movement, putting on his coat. It is labelled "Prod. 2003, Seq. 3.1, Scene 5", numbered "369," and showcases delicate shadow instruction and green tonal layout. Both sheets bear clear ink and paint reference markings, notably the use of red and green colour pencils to indicate colour separation, shading, and contour, all essential for guiding cel painters during production. The artwork sits on Disney's 5-hole peg configuration, standard for the studio's Golden Age of animation. The Geppetto drawing comes with a protective sheet of acetate. Dimensions (largest): 31.75 cm x 39.25 cm (12.5" x 15.5")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

JAMES GILLRAY (BRITISH 1756-1851) THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH Etching and aquatint with original hand-colouring Published by Hannah Humphrey, 1808 Sheet: 27 x 39cm (10½ x 15¼ in.) Condition Report: It is not possible to examine the work out of its frame as the mounts are all sellotaped to the glass, and there is a risk of the glass breaking. It is presumed that the sheet is not laid down but stuck to the mount at the corners. The sheet appears to have been trimmed to the edge of the plate, and as a result is causing some undulation throughout. There is some discolouration to the sheet, however the hand-colouring pigments are still strong. There is some isolated brown staining to the left and right edges. The bottom half of the sheet appears to have some water-staining which is most noticeable to the white bear.  Condition Report Disclaimer
