Sewing Interest - a mixed collection of bobbin / lace making tools to include: bone examples, couple with stained bone decoration; many wooden examples of mixed sizes and types, light wood to dark wooden examples; most with bead attachments of the 1950s or later, altogether a mix of 20th century dates. Along with some lace-making patterns / designs on paper; two patterns on paper comprising of A Honiton Lace Spray and a Devon Teachers' Lace Day 1982, along with a reference binder on 121 Honiton Lace Fillings and five bobbin or lace related reference books, two on Honiton Lace from Devon.
Victorian bobbin and needle lace: A very fine and elaborately worked 19th c Brussels mixed lace handkerchief surround, Point d’Angleterre, with very deep border; together with a Ghent Valenciennes bobbin lace tie or scarf; four Brussels mixed lace collars, and various edgings of bobbin lace or needle lace, some of the latter with raised roses. A good example of a rosewood and cut brass sewing box, circa 1820, of sarcophagol form, with quarter bobbin mouldings, rosewood ring side handles and raised on bun feet. The lid interior with rouched silk panel in tooled leather surround, over a lidded and compartmentalised tray in blue paper and silk (some wear and small losses), 30.2 x 21 x 15.5cms.
Miss Shephard’s rosewood and inlaid sarcophagol form sewing box, 1839, raised on bun feet with turned knob side handles, the front and lid with pewter lines, mother of pearl dots and floral motifs, the lid with a cartouche initialled and dated ‘ES 1839’, quarter bobbin mouldings. The lid interior with yellow silk pocket over a lidded and compartmentalised yellow silk and paper tray with pewter edgings, with a set of five mother of pearl top reels, waxer, tape measure, three pearl handled tools, pearl shuttle, silver thimble and thimble guard. The lower section with associated letters and envelopes recording the gift of the box to Miss Shephard from her ‘S.S. Scholars’, 34 x 21.5 x 16cms.
A good selection of modern lace bobbins, comprising twelve with spiral spot inscriptions including ‘David and Christine Springett Bobbin Makers 1982’, another ‘Jack-In-The-Box’, three others, five in glass, fifteen variously painted and six others including two wooden mother and babes. Early 19th century whitework and a selection of later bobbin and machine lace: a deep lawn collar very finely embroidered in white and edged with Valenciennes lace together with another, smaller; three further such collars of varying size; a pair of whitework and lace sleeves; a long collar in perlerine style worked in Bedfordshire lace; a tape lace collar in similar form; eight handmade lace collars and four chemical lace collars; and a small quantity of assorted lace edgings and fragments (qty) Mostly in good order. A rosewood sarcophagol form brass inlaid sewing box, circa 1840, raised on bun feet and with side ring handles, the front and lid with brass line and cut dot inlay, the lid with a cut brass scroll inlay, quarter bobbin mouldings. The lid interior with a mirror in yellow silk frame over a lidded and compartmentalised tray in yellow paper and silk with pewter edgings, 30 x 21.5 x 14.5cms.
Fifty lace bobbins, comprising thirty one in bone including spot inscribed – To Only Me Constant Be / Marrey Me Quick / Forget Me Not / Aunt Louisa / Dear Louisa / Father – Father ??? / Prove True ? / Mary / John / Lucy / Sam . 1 / a bone bobbin the stem incorporating spangles, and nineteen various wooden. Victorian lace, Belgian: a bobbin appliqué tie or narrow scarf; a good flounce of bobbin appliqué, approx. 370 by 17 cm; a bonnet veil with Bruges bobbin lace border; a Bruges collar with long front points; another similar; a finer collar with raised veins to the leaves; a narrow collar and a selection of short lengths of bobbin lace edging, and two short borders of needle lace (qty) One collar appears to have been dipped in tea. Am elaborate rosewood and cut brass inlaid sewing box of sarcophagol form, circa 1840, the rectangular base raised on knurled bun feet, the front and canted lid with leaf scroll panels of cut brass and brass line inlay, quarter bobbin mouldings, rosewood ring side carrying handles. The lid interior in ruched blue silk with a fall front pocket in gilt tooled red leather frame over a lidded and compartmentalised tray in blue paper and patterned cloth with needle books, pin cushions and tool card, the fittings comprising a set of six mother of pearl reels and a stone top silver thimble, 28.2 x 23 x 24cms.

A walnut and marquetry side table, 19th century, Indo-Portuguese, the rectangular top with geometric decoration and ivory inlays, raised on bobbin-turned supports united by stretchers, terminating in ball feet, 70cm wide 47cm deep 64cm highIMPORTANT NOTEThis lot contains ivory material. Upholstery with marks and dirt and would benefit from replacement. Side stretchers appear replaced. Joints sound and solid and the chair appears in fair order. Please see additional images.
A late 19th century Chinese export lacquered sewing box of octagonal form, standing on carved animal like feet, the box heavily decorated with foliate and swirled design with figures and buildings to areas, with metal handles to sides and hinged cover decorated again with matching design and central figural design, interior with various compartments, couple covered with building gilt design, two pen trays, a pin cushion and others, uncovered divisions mostly all with mixed bone sewing items including thimble, bobbin holders, pots, and others (some damaged), with lower drawer opening to reveal fitted interior, overall size of box approx. 36cm wide x 27cm deep x 15.5cm high. Further details: exterior with some loss and minor damage - slight splits or loss to areas and loss to gilding or paint; impact damage to area next to lower drawer; other chips and loss to parts; feet with some loss but stable; interior divisions with some loss and bone pieces some broken.
