HENRY IV: (1553-1610) King of France 1589-1610 and King of Navarre 1572-1610. First French Monarch of the House of Bourbon. Assassinated. A very good content L.S., `Henry', one page, folio, Rouen, 31st August 1603, to M. de la Force, in old French. On the advice I received that those of the so-called reformed religion of my country of Béarn, at the last synod held there, had resolved to send some ministers from among them to remonstrate with me on certain articles of the last cahier presented to me by the Bishop of Oloron, both in his name and that of the Bishop of Lescar and others of the said country, even though the collection of funds for the said journey had already been resolved; as also that the said bishops were to come from this side, to contest on their part the merit of the said articles, not being able to bear to see themselves easily deprived of what had been granted to them by me for the exercise of their religion; and because I would be very happy if these things were sooner put to rest, as has always been my intention, than so often rehashed before me; especially since it would ultimately disrupt the peace of mind of some and others that I have provided as much as possible...") Further, Henry IV explains that he is about to depart to Provence and asks his correspondent to attend the Bishop´s requests trying to keep them calmed. Countesigned at the base and addressed to the verso. Small age wear with edges uneven and the right one very slightly trimmed, otherwise GJacques Nompar de Caumont (1558-1652), Duc de La Force, Marshal of France and State councilor of Henri IV.Having renounced the Protestant religion in 1593, Henry IV, having become King of France, had pledged to reestablish the Catholic faith in Béarn, his native region. CHARLES X: (1757-1836) King of France 1824-30. Brief A.L.S., Charles Philippe, one page, 4to, Paris, 1st May n.y. (1814), to an unidentified correspondent, in French. The King states, in full, `The King´s entry into Paris is positively fixed for next Tuesday at ten in the morning.´ With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor wrinkling to the right edge and light overall age toning, otherwise VG The present letter is written at an important date in the Bourbon Restoration. In January 1814, Charles covertly left his home in London to join the Coalition forces in southern France. His brother Louis XVIII, by then wheelchair-bound and in exile in England, supplied Charles, his younger brother, with letters patent creating him Lieutenant General of the kingdom. On 31st March, the Allies captured Paris and a few days later, on 4th April, Napoleon I abdicated. The Senate declared King Louis XVIII restored. Charles had arrived in the capital on 12th April and acted as Lieutenant General of the kingdom until Louis XVIII arrived from England. Two days after the present letter was written, on 3rd May, the King was greeted with great rejoicing from the Parisians and proceeded to occupy the Tuileries Palace. Charles X, known as the Count of Artois for much of his life, reigned as the last Bourbon King of France from 1824-30. An uncle of the uncrowned King Louis XVII and the younger brother of reigning Kings Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles supported the latter in exile and eventually succeeded him. During his brief tenure as regent, Charles created an ultra-royalist secret police that reported directly back to him without Louis XVIII's knowledge. It operated for over five years. His rule of almost six years ended in the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in his abdication and the election of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, as King of the French.

OF NAPOLEONIC NAVAL INTEREST - A George III silver full hunter fusee verge pocket watch by Cade & Robinson. Provenance - Once belonging to Commander Bonamy Mansell (1786-1868) The white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, outer minute track and subsidiary seconds dial, winding hole at 3 position, the movement signed Cade & Robinson LONDON 5165, the engraved balance cock with rose cut diamond endstone over a silver regulating disk, the case hallmarked London 1809, the hinged cover engraved 'BONAMY MANSELL October 13th 1810', the front engraved with the Mansell crest, 55mm. Total weight 127.5g. Bonamy Mansell, born 13 Oct. 1786, at Guernsey, is the brother of Captain Sir Thomas Mansell R.N., K.T., K.C.H.Bonamy entered the Navy in January 1800, as First Class Volunteer on board the HMS London, commanded in the Channel by Capt. John Child Purvis. In 1801 he becomes a Midshipman into the HMS Royal George. In 1802, he joined HMS Dédaigneuse with Capts. Thomas George Shortland, Peter Heywood, and Charles James Johnston. He sailed for the East Indies, where, in June 1805, he accompanied the last-mentioned officer into the HMS Cornwallis. After participating in a gallant attack made by that vessel in 11th November 1806, in company with HMS Sceptre, in St. Paul's Bay, Isle of Bourbon, and attacked the shipping there, which consisted of the frigate Sémillante, three armed ships and twelve captured British ships. However, what little breeze there was soon failed, and the two ships found it difficult to manoeuvre and were unable to recapture any prizes. In 1807 Mansell joined HMS Culloden and on 11th December he witnessed the destruction of the dockyard and stores at Griessee, in the island of Java, and of all the men-of-war remaining to Holland in India. On 1st May 1807, uniting with the Nereide frigate, he was involved in a successful engagement with two batteries near St. Rose, in the Ile de Bourbon, where he was severely hurt in the leg by the premature explosion of a magazine containing 100 barrels of powder, which took place while he was in the act of pulling off from the shore with a message to Capt. Corbett from Lieut. Arthur Batt Bingham of the Nereide, with whom he had landed. He was subsequently concerned in the capture of the French frigate Caroline and of other vessels in St. Paul’s Bay, Ile de Bourbon. He was most actively employed on the coast of North America. During the year 1812 Mr. Mansell, at the time in the HMS Helder, succeeded in the presence of a convoy of 300 sail, in setting fire to a galliot, defended on the beach in the Great Belt, by a sharp fire from 3 or 4 field-pieces and musketry – an enterprise which occasioned the boats under his orders a loss of 2 Midshipmen and of at least 10 or 12 men killed and wounded. He had also the good fortune, in a boat of the same ship, to the capture of a valuable merchantman laden with linen. He accepted his present rank in 1847.The inscription on this watch, with date October 13th October 1810, may refer to his action on HMS Leopold, which he joined for a passage on 23rd May 1810. The 50-gun forth rate HMS Leopard, along with other ships, was part of a British squadron tasked with blockading Isle de France (now Mauritius) and the surrounding area to capture or destroy French ships, as part of the Mauritius campaign of 1809-1811. The squadron, led by Commodore Josias Rowley, also included HMS Raisonnable, HMS Nereide, HMS Sirius, and HMS Boadicea. This action was in response to the French deployment of ships to the Indian Ocean.A note on the provenance from our vendors " We three sisters recently inherited these four Mansell family pocket watches (along with associated Mansell family Naval and Military medals) when our mother Jill Mansell’s only brother John died childless last year. For the previous generations these watches have followed the Mansell family line being handed down to the oldest son of the oldest son. Our maternal Grandfather Lt Col George William Mansell CBE (1904 -1983) was in the Royal Artillery 1918-1945 one of the Army watches is his, the other military watch belonged to his father Lt Colonel Sir John Herbert Mansell KBE RA (1864-1933) also of the Royal Artillery. Sir John’s father was George Hope Mansell, Commander RN (1826-1862) son of Sir Thomas (1777-1858) the gold watch owner. The Gold watch from 1800 belonged to the renowned Naval hero Sir Thomas Mansell RN who was our Grandfather’s paternal Grandfather and the silver watch from 1810 belonged to Sir Thomas’s brother Bonamy Mansell RN (1786-1847) and has his name engraved on it. Not running and doesn't wind. The fusee chain appears broken. The balance appears good and us moving freely. The cover of the watch is broken on the hinge and needs attention. Clearly more people fall into the “love” category though, as Laphroaig is one of the top ten best selling single malts in the world. Just as well, then, that it is the second largest distillery on the island (after Caol Ila), capable of producing 3.4 million litres of spirit per annum. The distillery still retains its own malting floor, and although it only covers 20% of their requirements, it is instrumental in providing the creosote-y, phenolic character that defines the Laphroaig spirit. No visible condition issues. Please see additional images.

However, it’s actually Bruichladdich with its traditionally unpeated style that has earned the reputation as the local favourite. It’s only relatively recently that the distillery has dabbled in peated whisky with their Port Charlotte range, as well as the ultra-heavily peated Octomore releases.

Lot 167

ST MAGDALENE 1975 23 YEAR OLD CADENHEAD'S AUTHENTIC COLLECTION LOWLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1975Bottled: 07/1999Matured in Bourbon Butt1 of 618 bottles41.5% ABV / 70cl St Magdalene was the last remaining distillery in the town of Linlithgow when it closed in 1983; the result of a downturn in the market leading to owners, DCL, finding themselves with an overabundance of stock. The distillery building itself has now been turned into flats (although its iconic pagoda roof remains) so it seems unlikely to make a comeback. As a result, examples of its Single Malt are becoming increasingly sought after.
