Sport pack suspensionOne owner from newThe Jaguar XJS was a luxury grand tourer produced from 1975 through to 1996 and replaced the E-Type. Although it never had quite the same sporting image, the XJS was actually more aerodynamic with the last one being produced on 4th April 1996; at that stage 115,413 had been produced during a 21-year production life.First registered 2nd May 1989 this rare manual transmission example is paired with the lighter 3.6 making it the fastest accelerating XJS, and also the most economical. Presented in Bordeaux Red metallic with contrasting Doeskin full leather interior with red piping it is being sold due to the 96 year old previous owner no longer able to enjoy. One owner from new although the V5 has been transferred to his daughters name so shows one previous keeper. Offered in excellent and highly original condition throughout, it was used mostly in its earlier life and then much less until it was put away for a number of years. Recently recommissioned by XJS Specialist XJ-Motor services which included a full service of all fluids and filters, spark plugs, various suspension components including rear trailing arms, drop links, bushes etc, a new water pump, some relays etc. It has also had a full geometry set up and MoT (which it passed with no advisories). Nearly £3,000 has been spent in the last few weeks to get it ready for sale.We are informed it has always been garaged and thus the paintwork is in excellent condition, with a smoothness and brightness of a car that's led an easy sheltered life. The gauges, heating and electrics all worked at time of consignment and we are informed the car drives wonderfully, smooth and powerful with the Getrag manual gearbox lovely to use which goes in to gear with no fuss. The interior is in superb condition, there is some light wear on the driver’s bolster, but no deformation. Supplied with a large history file, including the original bill of sale, service invoices, old tax discs, MoTs, all dealer correspondence, the original brochure, specification brochure, colour chart, price list, full owner's manual pack with stamped service book, the original cassette instructions and booklet for the radio. It also comes with all its original keys, the original complete toolkit and complete tool case, as well as the spare wheel. Having been Wax- oiled from new with original glass, panels, radio, original pinstripes on both sides and original number plates… garaged all its life when not in use this is quite likely one of the nicest XJS' for sale. The Ford Escort was manufactured from 1968 to 2002. The first use of the Escort name was for a reduced specification version of the Ford Squire, a 1950s estate version of the Anglia 100E though this did not sell well by comparison to the other members of the 100E family. The Escort was revised in January 1995 (sixth generation) although it was still based on the previous model. This example, owned by the present owner for the last 25 years, is the Ghia Cabriolet version of this popular marque and is presented in green with black interior. It comes with all documents including its original handbook, radio instruction manual and its original manufacturers sales brochure. The history file contains many receipts for all the work carried out on the car whilst in our client’s ownership, including all MoT test certificates. Over time, both back and front plastic bumpers have been replaced owing to inconsiderate other drivers!! The front offside wing and door were replaced in circa 2014 after a van reversed into it! This was deemed as a Category D write off according to the HPI but the vendor has informed us that the repair work was carried out at considerable expense , as his insurance company at the time were not prepared to pay for it! The present owner put in a new clutch in 2023, brakes and new tyres were fitted all in the last two years. Consigned by James Good. Zola (Émile) Édouard Manet, first edition, 48pp., frontispiece portrait of Manet by Bracquemond and etched 'Olympia' plate by Manet, the odd spot but largely very clean, modern boards, light fading on lower board, original wrappers bound in, 8vo, Paris, E. Dentu, 1867. *** First edition of Zola's biographical study of his friend Edouard Manet, first published in the Revue du XIXe siecle on January 1, 1867. The work was initially sold as a brochure at the retrospective exhibition organized by the artist in the pavilion built at his own expense at the Alma, on the sidelines of the Universal Exhibition and the Salon of 1867, from which he had been excluded.More than a biography, it is a defence of the work that was first exhibited at the 1865 Salon, depicting the high-class sex worker, Olympia: "It contains all of him, and only him. It will remain as the defining work of his talent, as the highest mark of his power" (p. 34)
A very rare miniature fabric covered card 'Brook' collar by R.H. & S Rogers Ltd, stamped inside 'R.H.&S.R Ltd LONDON EXHIBITION 1910', produced for the Brussels World's Fair in 1910, contained in a small card box stamped in gilt 'R.H.&S. ROGERS Ltd LONDON', together with an early 20thC, possibly contemporaneous bound pamphlet 'A Great Enterprise: The Story of Messr's R.H.&S. Rogers Ltd, printed by Unwin Brothers, box 4cm wide. (2)FOOTNOTE: Of interest to collectors of gentlemen's fashion history and World's Fair memorabilia. Founded in 1839, R.H.&S. Rogers were Britain's first and largest producer of ready made shirts and collars. They had a large factory in Coleraine , Northern Ireland and later used the brand Rocola. This charming miniature collar was produced as a souvenir for visitors to the Rogers stand in the British Pavilion at the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in Brussels in 1910. The style of the collar is known as 'Brook' and is typical of Edwardian fashion. Between 14th & 15th August, a serious fire raged across a large section of the Fair. Although the French and Belgian were hit, the most serious damage was to the British pavilion, whiuch was largely gutted. The Roger's stand would have undoubtedly been badly damaged, if not destroyed, making this an extremely rare survivor, not only of Rogers' innovative company and Edwardian gentlemen's fashion, but also of the World's Fair itself.CONDITION: The collar is intact and clean. The box is intact but is slightly rubbed at the edges and corners, with the gilt stamping on the lid being worn. The brochure is complete and intact, but loosely bound, with the covers being damaged at the edges, as photographed.Packing & Shipping Let us take the hassle of sorting out packing and shipping from you. Sold by Order of the Recipient'We swing between the steel gates to see sabotaged cranes lying toppled and half-immersed in the foul thickness of what was once water - like the skeletons of prehistoric creatures preserved in their death throes...Their only light relief is when they are allowed to blow up the massive stocks of light ammunition left behind by fleeing Iraqis...My team is working just inside the main harbour wall; those not diving or supervising are huddled around a brazier in whatever layers of clothing they can fit over their uniform. They look like a group of down-and-outs surviving inner city decay on an English winter's day.I am met by their CO, Lieutenant Peter Williams, once a carefree Sub Lieutenant with me in Avenger. He now looks drawn and a good deal older - but I dare say so do I. His exploits will rightly win him a Distinguished Service Cross...I inspect their 'goodies', row upon row of Iraqi ordnance: booby traps extracted from dark corners; abandoned shells and grenades; flares and machine-gun bullet bandoliers and weapon cases. London Gazette 29 June 1991:'Williams arrived in the Northern Arabian Gulf on 1 February 1991 as Deputy Officer in Charge of Fleet Diving Unit B (FDU B). He moved into action immediately, co-ordinating training, refining techniques on new equipment, establishing an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) cell and overseeing inspections for Improvised Explosive Devices (lEDs) in ships of the RN Task Group as they arrived in Bahrain.During hostilities Williams was the supervisor of an airborne EOD team and of diving operations from Gemini craft, spending many hours in helicopters in the front line of Naval operations, often within ten miles of the enemy coast. Insisting on putting himself in the way of danger before his men, he showed remarkable courage and stamina by leading personally on countermining sorties, placing charges on live buoyant mines and diving for protracted periods, often at night, on live ground mines in order to bring them to the surface for exploitation. In addition he conducted the unenviable task of recovering dead bodies from the sea into helicopters. He led a team of two men on an inspection of HMS Gloucester to search for a mine reportedly entangled in her propeller shafts.Moving ashore on 5 March to Mina Ash Shuaybah he took over as Officer In Charge of FDU B. He established a base camp and helped co-ordinate EOD operations with American and Australian Units for clearing the ports of Mina Al Ahmadi, Mina Ad Dohah and Faylakah Island. The work involved rendering safe unstable live ordnance, beached mines, booby traps and lEDs, clearing buildings and oil tankers of ordnance and collecting dead bodies from the harbour waters. Often these jobs required him and his team to first reach the scene through areas of antipersonnel mines and barbed wire. Throughout this extremely dangerous operation he showed an implacable professionalism and positive leadership which was beyond his experience. At all times his men saw him in the leading role, tirelessly taking on the most hazardous tasks himself. The conditions under which FDU B operated were atrocious. With no infrastructure ashore the men lived in cargo containers on a jetty with no light, sanitation or potable water, in an atmosphere heavy with acrid smoke and toxic fumes from the oilfield fires burning inland, and diving in water with zero visibility due to the thick oil pollution. All the time they were at risk from random gunfire from uncontrolled factions of the local population. Williams's conspicuous leadership, resolute professionalism and boundless energy ensured that his Unit's effectiveness remained at peak levels from start to finish and that his men's morale was of the highest order in the face of dire adversity.'Personel Report covering the dates 1 February-23 April 1991, as Officer in Charge Fleet Diving Unit B & NP1037 to Commander Task Group 321.1, from Commodore C. J. S. Craig, Commander Task Group 321.1:'This is to certify that Lieutenant Williams has conducted himself to my entire satisfaction.Williams came into theatre after two weeks has elapsed of the Gulf War, becoming Deputy Officer in Charge of a Fleet Diving Unit. Initially a supervisor of the airborne EOD teams, he personally led several countermining sorties - by day and night - against some of the 1500 Iraqi mines.Shortly after the war finished he took over he took over as the Officer in Charge of the combined diving team which worked for several weeks in appalling and hazardous conditions to clear the main Kuwaiti harbours - a task which was completed ahead of time and thankfully without any casualties. Throughout this period Williams has led courageously, and utterly from the front, has shown stamina, cheerfulness and professionalism, and has set a fine example to his people. He has briefed clearly, shown economical style with his signalled reports and demonstrated an ability to organise events sensibly and wisely.I have recommended his without reservation for transfer to the General List and would see him developing his professional potential through further command for which I also have recommended him.Altogether Williams can be extremely proud of his achievements in peace and war in the Gulf.'SALE 25001 NOTICE:Now offered together with his Royal Navy Divers Log (Form S. 1627), covering the periods 12 February 1985-8 March 2004, including his Ops during the Gulf War, a terrific resource with a plethora of detail.
