TWO BURMESE SILVER REPOUSSÉ BOXES WITH DRAGON AND FIGURAL MOTIFS Burma (Myanmar), South East Asia, late 19th - 20th centuryComprising a rectangular Burmese colonial silver box, worked in high relief using repoussé and chased techniques, the lid and sides decorated with lively dragon motifs, scrolling foliage, and floral borders, the central medallion featuring a leaping deer, dragons and scrolling floral designs continuing around the body, all classic features of collectible Burmese silver, the underside engraved in both Burmese and Roman script “K.K. Marque déposée” together with further Burmese characters, a mark commonly seen on presentation boxes and collectible silver from Burma (Myanmar), the interior decorated with similar dragon motifs, this form often described as a betel box or trinket box and highly prized by collectors of Asian silver and colonial silverware; together with an octagonal silver box, the lid cast in high relief with a figural scene, possibly from a local lore or Buddhist Jataka tales, the sides with panels of seated deities in arched reserves, and the base with repoussé mythological animals, reflecting the strong influence of Hindu and Buddhist iconography in Burmese silverwork of the colonial and post-colonial period, both boxes entirely hand-crafted using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques on high purity silver.The rectangular box 12cm x 7cm x 3.5cm, approx. 219.2gr.The octagonal box 8.5cm x 6.5cm x 7cm, approx. 187.9gr. A SINHALA PALM-LEAF BUDDHIST MANUSCRIPT WITH LACQUERED BOOK COVERS Kandy, Sri Lanka, ca. 1840 - 1860Sinhala manuscript on dried palm leaves, containing non-illustrated religious discourses of the Buddhist doctrine transcribed from Pali, the text present on both recto and verso, two binding holes per each leaf, bound between two lacquered wooden boards painted in bright red, ochre yellow, green and black, the front of the covers with a dense vegetal grid of foliate sprays surrounded by an outer frieze of flower petals or palmette leaves, the reverse with figural illustrations of various Buddhas and devotees alternating with lush vegetation, in particular one figure depicting a reclined Buddha sleeping, a typical image usually associated with the state known as parinirvana (Sanskrit: parinirvāṇa; Pali: parinibbāna) describing the passing away of the Buddha and his entry into a state of ultimate liberation from the cycle of rebirth (samsara).16.5cm x 62.5cm x 6cm including the wooden binding In Kandy, one of the main temples, the Tooth Temple, holds an entire library dedicated to Buddhist doctrine and rituals. Mit der drohenden kommunistischen Gefahr durch die sowjetischen Besatzer entschließt sich Kim 1946 zur Flucht nach Südkorea, wo er an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste der Nationalen Universität Seoul Malerei studiert und sich progressiven Tendenzen, etwa dem Art Informel, zuwendet. Zahlreiche politische Umwälzungen und damit einhergehende Umbrüche in seiner Biografie, vor allem aber der Koreakrieg, prägen ihn zutiefst. Die einschneidenden Erfahrungen von Entwurzelung und Isolation in Verbindung mit den erlittenen Verlusten haften ihm auch während eines Aufenthaltes in New York an. Dort sucht der Künstler die Auseinandersetzung mit Pop Art und Minimalismus, um die Entwicklung seiner künstlerischen Sprache voranzutreiben. Diese von Unruhe und Rastlosigkeit begleitete Suche nach einem eigenen Stil kommt erst mit dem Umzug nach Paris 1970 zu einem Ende.Zwischen Form und Auflösung: Wassertropfen Aus seinen biomorphen Kompositionen heraus gelangt er dort schließlich zu einer Form, die zum zentralen Element in seinem Werk werden sollte: Wassertropfen offenbaren sich in ihrer prägnanten konkreten Gestalt und eröffnen zugleich eine symbolische Dimension. In der seither zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration oszillierenden Malerei von Kim wird dieses Motiv zum Sinnbild, das in seiner Verkörperung der Gegensätze Form - Auflösung in enger Beziehung zur philosophischen Dualität von Körper und Geist steht. Die Wassertropfen in "Ohne Titel (Wassertopfen)" sind über die gesamte Bildfläche aus grob strukturierter, ungrundierter Leinwand wie blanke Murmeln verteilt. Durch den Lichteinfall aus der oberen rechten Ecke werfen die durchsichtigen Körper einen Schlagschatten, der ihre Silhouette elliptisch in die Länge zieht. Spiritueller Ausdruck im malerischen Spannungsfeld von Motiv und Grund Aufgrund ihrer hyperrealistischen Wiedergabe in feinmalerischer Präzision und verhaltener Tonigkeit scheinen die einzelnen Tropfen wie schwebende Glaskugeln die Ebene der Bildfläche zu verlassen und plastisch in den dreidimensionalen Raum einzudringen. Darüber hinaus lässt ihre Oberflächenspannung die Tropfen zu spiegelglatten Sphären werden: Als Träger von Reflexen weisen sie auf einen Bereich außerhalb der Darstellungsebene. Zugleich legt ihr durchsichtiges Volumen die raue Materialität des ihnen zugrundeliegenden Gewebes offen. In diesem spannungsvollen Zusammenspiel von Malgrund und dargestelltem Gegenstand reflektiert der Buddhist Kim die Bedingungen von Malerei und stellt sie in einen spirituellen Zusammenhang. "Im Akt des Malens von Wassertropfen werden alle Dinge im Inneren aufgelöst und man kehrt in einen transparenten Zustand des 'Nichts' zurück. Indem wir Ärger, Angst, Furcht und alles andere in die 'Leere' zurückführen, erfahren wir Frieden und Zufriedenheit. Während einige die Anreicherung des 'Ego' suchen, strebe ich nach der Auflösung dieses und suche nach der Methode, dies auszudrücken." In Kims Malerei äußert sich ein elementarer Zweifel an der Darstellbarkeit der Welt, zu der auch konstruierte Vorstellungen über die menschliche Existenz gehören. Die in den Wassertropfen veranschaulichte Durchlässigkeit von Innen und Außen verweist auf die Durchdringung von Realitäts- und Seinsebenen und - in Entsprechung fernöstlicher Philosophie - auf fließende Übergänge zwischen Zuständen. Bei Tschang-Yeul Kim fällt daher der konzentrierte Pinselauftrag mit dem Verstreichen der Zeit zusammen. Malerei dient als meditative Übung zur Entleerung des Geistes und Entschleunigung des Körpers. The catalogue states that Heinrich Harrer was mediator in the acquisition of this object. Heinrich Harrer was a mountaineer and writer, who was renowned for his escape from the British Authorities in the Indian Himalayas after the outbreak of the Second World War.
