Attributed to Cecil William Boyle, an international sportsman, who played Rugby-Union for England and cricket for Oxford. Captain in QOOH and appointed Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeumanry. He took 30 of his own horses to South Africa where he fought in the Boer War with 40th (Oxfordshire) Coy, 10th Bn Imperial Yeomanry. On 5/4/1900, whilst fighting French volunteers at Boshof, he sadly became the first member of the Imperial Yeomanry to be killed in action; he was 47. LOUIS XIII: (1601-1643) King of France 1610-43. A.L.S., Louis, one page, 8vo, Versailles, 12th June 1633, to Cardinal Richelieu (´Mon Cousin´), in French. The King writes to his Chief Minister on a variety of topics, commencing with his immediate travel plans, ´Je fais état de partir mardi de St Germain, pour aller coucher à Rebais le lendemain à Gournay et le jour d'après à Forges´ (Translation: ´I am planning to leave St Germain on Tuesday, to spend the night in Rebais, the next day in Gournay and the day after that in Forges´), continuing to refer to the Polish ambassador Ladislas, who was in France to settle the conflict between his country and Sweden (a mission that would have a favourable outcome), ´Je donnerai volontiers demain audience à l'ambassadeur de Pologne et donnerai ordre pour lui donner à dîner. J'approuve ce que l'on a fait.....´ (Translation: ´I will gladly grant an audience to the Polish ambassador tomorrow and give orders for him to be given dinner. I approve of what has been done.....´), further writing ´Je ne parlerai à âme qui vive de l'affaire de Rassan´ (Translation: ´I will not speak to a soul about the Rassan affair´) and also mentioning his two superintendents of finance, ´Pour Msr de Bullion et Boutillier je leur accorde volontiers ce que vous me demandez pour eux´ (Translation: ´As for Messrs. de Bullion and Boutillier, I will gladly grant them what you ask of me on their behalf´). In a postscript to the left margin the King expresses his pleasure at just having received some news, ´Le marquis de Sourdis me vient de dire que vous allez demain coucher à Pontoise, de quoi je suis très aise´ (Translation: ´The Marquis de Sourdis has just told me that you will be spending the night in Pontoise tomorrow, which I am very pleased about´). With address panel to the verso, featuring the original small red wax seal and pale blue thread, and with a small area of paper loss (neatly repaired) caused by the original opening of the letter. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGCardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) Armand Jean du Plessis. French Catholic prelate and statesman who served as Chief Minister of State of France 1624-42 under King Louis XIII. The Red Eminence, as he became known, exerted a large influence on civil and religious affairs.

Four of the items are in very good condition however the black lanyard is a little frayed.
