Viceroyalty school. Peru. 18th century.“Disquisitions of Pope Pius V with Philip II during the Council of Trent.”Oil on canvas.101 x 159 cm. Historical canvas that reflects the conflict between the popes and King Philip II of Spain during the sixteenth century. Philip II, known as “the Prudent King”, ruled Spain from 1556 until his death in 1598. During his reign, the Spanish monarch sought to consolidate the power of his kingdom and defend the Catholic faith against the Protestant Reformation that was spreading throughout Europe. The most relevant pope in this conflict was the Pontiff Pius V, seated on the left under a canopy, He was head of the Catholic Church from 1566 until his death in 1572. Pius V considered Philip II a natural ally in the fight against Protestantism, but he was also critical of some of the Spanish monarch's policies. One of the main disputes between this pope and Philip II centered on the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish king used this instrument to persecute heretics and maintain Catholic orthodoxy in his kingdom. However, the popes considered the Spanish Inquisition to be too severe and abusive in its exercise of power. Despite the differences and clashes, the conflict between the popes and Philip II did not reach a point of total rupture. Both sides understood the importance of maintaining a diplomatic relationship and sought solutions to their differences with a more amicable relationship and peaceful solutions to their discrepancies. In the painting we can contemplate Philip II, dressed as a King (with cape and ermine) appearing before the Pope, wearing the Golden Fleece as a symbol of his authority and royalty, and of his defense of the Catholic Church. This is the scene in which he is called to chapter by Pope Pius V, and appears before him, with all his court, in the middle of the Council of Trent. The attitude of the pope is conciliatory, almost of blessing, and the hieratism of the Prudent Philip II speaks of his submission and acceptance of what the Roman Church imposes on him, in spite of his different ideas. The rest of the ecclesiastical figures and companions of the monarch can be contemplated in a room which has classical architecture, in an attitude of chat, discussion, confrontation, dialogue, making the moment much more active, as if it were captured in a snapshot.

THUNBERG, Carl Peter (1743-1828). Letter in French to 'Monsieur' (probably Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt (1773-1854), at the time hortulanus of the Leiden Hortus Botanicus), Uppsala 23 Jan. 1828. 1 fold. leaf, r° & v°, signed.NOTE: Interesting letter in which Thunberg lists animals which he would like to add to his museum's collection. After a visit to Holland some wealthy Dutch merchants offered Thunberg the finances to make an exploration tour to the East Indies and Japan, in order to bring back living plants and seeds, suited for the climate in Holland. After a sojourn at the Cape of Good Hope, from where he travelled over a large part of South Africa (1772-75), he sailed for Batavia and there joined the Dutch embassy to the Imperial Court at Tokyo. On the voyage home he passed half a year in Java, and seven months in Ceylon, before returning to Europe. In April 1779 he returned to Stockholm, and became Ordinary Professor at Uppsala in 1784, as successor to Linnaeus.

Upgraded specificationTwo-time Cape to Cape rally entrantThe MGC was the first 'high performance' version of the MGB. From early on in the design stages of the MGB there was an intention to create high performance variants, using a range of Vee engines that did not make it to production. The MGC was much more than a tuned MGB, in fact it was a completely re-engineered car, but retained many visual connections to the MGB. On the outside the MGC was often mistaken for an MGB as the only visual difference was the heavily bulged bonnet with a transverse chrome strip that accentuated the bulges, and the standard use of 15” wheels instead of the 14” used on the MGB. Inside there were very few differences between the B and C, other than the 140mph speedometer and tachometer with a yellow and red banding, set against lower RPM than the MGB. This lovely example was purchased in 2018 after much deliberation to partake in a charity classic car run. Two enthusiastic petrol heads decided upon the Cape to Cape rally from Cape Trafalger in Spain to Cape Cornwall, a near 3,000 mile undertaking. After careful consideration they settled on an MGC to use and TVV 68F was purchased. The car in 2019 completed the charity Cape to Cape rally but was also one of only two to not require the help of any support crew with the owner stating it behaved faultlessly. Lockdown came about and the car was used infrequently until 2022 when the owner decided to once again complete the Cape to Cape which in 2022 started in Cape Cornwall driving to Cape Wrath then over to Ireland to Cape Clear and finally driving back to Cape Cornwall via Wales, some 3,500 miles in 14 days, again completing this time with just the need for a new fuel pump when a brand new unit had failed on day one. The event raised over a £1 million and this plucky MGC was a key entrant. To enjoy such an event this MGC was not a standard car, the specification is quite impressive, the engine has a gas flowed head, Multi branch exhaust manifold, MGM2 camshaft, vernier timing gear, lightened and balanced flywheel, MG Motorsport distributor, uprated oil cooler and radiator and full stainless steel exhaust system. The front suspension benefits from uprated torsion arms, a telescopic damper conversion, Spax adjustable shock absorbers and a Poly bushed quickrack. Th rear has Parabolic springs also telescopic damper conversion and Spax adjustable shock absorbers. To further assist a heated front screen was fitted, Alloy ‘knock on’ wheels with Uniroyal rain sport tyres, uprated headlights, MGB servo and a lovely wood rim steering wheel. A wonderful little classic car, perfect for short or indeed longer journeys with a fantastic shine and finish… indeed this would grace many shows as it would timed rallies but is equally at home pottering around on a Sunday afternoon, perfect British classic car ownership. MIRIAM SACKS (SOUTH AFRICAN/BRITISH 1922-2004) COSMIC ENERGY I, 1966 initialled in wool (lower right), signed and dated (to reverse), hand sewn wool 109.5cm x 105.5cm (43in x 41 ½in) Estate of the Artist. Miriam Sacks was a South African-born British textile artist and painter. She earned an MA in Social Anthropology from the University of Cape Town before moving to London in 1946 to join her husband. In 1951, she relocated to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where she began painting and established a children's art school.A visit to New York proved pivotal in her artistic journey—after encountering The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, she was inspired to explore tapestry as a medium. Developing her own unique, experimental technique, she created intricate "woven images" using needle and thread, much like a painter working with brushes and pigment. Her work drew on a diverse range of influences, from her African experiences and cultural heritage to broader social themes, blending figuration and abstraction. In 1964, Sacks returned to London and quickly gained an international reputation after exhibiting at the British Embassy in Washington, DC. At Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, her tapestries were displayed alongside works by leading British potters, including Han Coper and Lucie Rie, just as her work is displayed here, 50 years later. Over the following decades, she exhibited widely at venues including the Royal Festival Hall (1971), the Victoria and Albert Museum (1971, 1973), the South African National Gallery (1972), and Leighton House (1977, 1981, 1985, 1988), among others. Esteemed figures such as Maxwell Fry and Herman Wouk championed her work, which is now held in collections across the UK, the US, South Africa, Israel, Zimbabwe, and Canada. Her memory of Africa, its landscape and extraordinary light, has inspired most of her work, both figurative and abstract. Her subject matter has been informed by her love of nature, her studies in anthropology and music, and her understanding of how technology has impacted the world. Beyond her art, Sacks was a prolific essayist and an avid collector of materials related to her life's work, many of which are featured on her website: miriamsacks.com.
