Originally fewer in number in Indian Buddhism, the group expanded to eighteen in Chinese tradition, each with a unique personality, appearance, and symbolic meaning. These figures are often portrayed in temple art, shown in dynamic poses or interacting with animals and mythical creatures. Among the most iconic is the Tiger Taming Lohan, symbolizing the conquest of base instincts and the power of compassion and self-mastery. Another notable figure is the Dragon Taming Lohan, representing the control of chaotic forces and hidden wisdom. The Lohans are not gods but enlightened beings who remain in the world until the future Buddha, Maitreya, appears. They serve as moral exemplars and spiritual guardians, offering protection and inspiration to practitioners. Their presence in Chinese Buddhist culture highlights the fusion of spiritual ideals with folklore, artistry, and moral teachings. HERMES Boxed silk scarf " Art Des Steppes " by Annie Faivre original design from 1991 Over the years Annie Faivre has created numerous scarves for Hermès and all are as unique as they are popular. Her art is quickly identifiable with its rather unique and very detailed style, many times comprised of vivid color combinations and intricate patterns all enhancing her already rather complex compositions. Her 1991 Art des Steppes (The Art of the Steppe) is no exception and features the horses of the Steppe; the vast area of flat, unforested grasslands of southeastern Europe and Siberia. Due to Madame Faivres acclaim and to this designs worldwide popularity, Hermès re-issued the Art des Steppes six years later as a detail version, Art des Steppes (détail), and the full design again in 2001.The horses of the Steppe according to recent archeological findings, were first domesticated by peoples from the Eurasian Steppe about 5,000 years ago. The important role the Steppe horse and rider played in the cultural exchange on the Silk Road should also be mentioned here.According to Hermès, Annie Faivre does not cover her Steppe horses with just any horse blanket but with Chinese carpets adding a rich and colorful layer to her already elaborate design." A large sketch of a hunt scene,  Kotah, Rajasthan, 18th centuryInk heighted with gouache on paper, hills and monuments identified in black Devanagari script, mounted, glazed and framed, 46 x 63cm.Provenance: From the Collection of Francis Golding (1944-2013).Francis Golding's collection of Chinese works of art was sold at Christie's in 2015 and was assembled over forty years from reputable London dealers such as Bluett & Sons, John Sparks, and Spink & Son, and international auction houses including Sotheby's, Bonham's, and Christie’s. His collection of Indian paintings and drawings were acquired with a similar approach and a number were purchased from his friend the painter and Indian art collector Sir Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017). They were placed artfully in his London Georgian townhouse, where he lived with his partner, art historian Dr Satish Padiyar. He was widely considered to be one of the country’s leading architectural, planning and conservation consultants. As such, he greatly influenced the contemporary architectural landscape of London. His clients included world renowned architect Richard Rogers, with whom he advised on The Leadenhall Building in the City of London known as “The Cheese Grater”; and Rafael Viñoly, whose distinctive building nicknamed “The Walkie-Talkie” towers above London’s surrounding historic financial district at 20 Fenchurch Street. The soaring public sky terrace there, “The Francis Golding Terrace”, was named after him as a mark of respect for a man whose passion for London’s architecture and urban landscape improved the quality of the many developments on which he advised. Francis Golding also advised the celebrated architect Norman Foster, with whom he worked on London’s iconic building the “Gherkin.” More than one hundred and fifty items of Francis Golding’s wardrobe were acquired by Museum of London in 2017.

RHEE SEUNDJA (KOREAN 1918-2009) UNTITLED, 1961 signed (lower right), and inscribed 615F1244, oil on canvas 27cm x 34.8cm (10 5/8in x 13 5/8in) Acquired in Paris by the current owners aunt in the 1960s;Private Collection, London. Rhee Seundja was a pioneering Korean modern artist who seamlessly merged Western abstraction with Eastern philosophies. She began her artistic journey in the early 1950s in France, studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where Chinese abstract masters Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun had also trained. Immersing herself in the European art scene, she explored Art Informel, which was gaining momentum in Paris, and turned to abstraction in 1956.By the early 1960s, Rhee had developed a distinct style that fused an Eastern mindset with Western materials, creating a unique colour palette and artistic language. She reinterpreted traditional Korean patterns, using each brushstroke as a symbolic act of nurturing - both the land and, metaphorically, the children she had been separated from since 1951. Her work from this period, reflected themes of nature, spirituality, and femininity, often expressed through geometric forms, bold colours, and richly textured surfaces.Through her synthesis of cultural traditions and artistic innovation, Rhee became a significant figure in both Korean and international modern art, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy.
