The distinctive mark on the base of this censer indicates that it was made by Hu Wenming of Yunjian, active late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, and considered one of the most renowned metal artists of the late Ming period. The knife has a wooden handle that matches the case. Research shows that the piece is from the 19th century. A hand-painted Tianex plate was made in Russia in 1988. The plate has a scene of a castle with a bright landscape with trees and rushing water. A man is on a horse blowing a horn towards a woman sitting in the grass of the castle. A man with a long white beard flies through the sky. The edge is decorated with a gold luster and the plate is black. The back describes the scene and the plate in Russian.
