RAF35c 30th Anniversary of VJ Day signed MRAF Arthur ( Bomber ) Harris. 15 Aug 75 BFPS 1492 30th Anniversary of VJ Day Special Postmark No 101 Squadron Royal Air Force. 30th Anniversary of VJ Day Flown from RAF Waddington in Vulcan B Mk2 XM575 on a Training Sortie. Personally Signed Marshall of the RAF Sir Arthur Bomber Harris WW1 Pilot. Harris led RAF Bomber Command in World War Two, earning him the nickname 'Bomber Harris'. His implementation of the policy of 'saturation' or 'area' bombing of German cities has made him a hugely controversial figure. Leaving England at the age of 16, he travelled to Rhodesia where he worked on a farm becoming the manager by the age of 21. Having fought in South-West Africa, he returned to Britain and joined the RFC, gaining his RAeC Certificate (No 2015) on 6 November 1915. In March 1916, one of his flight, Lt W Leefe-Robinson, brought down the first Zeppelin over England for which he was awarded a VC. With No 45 Sqn he gained his five victories, thereby raising him to 'ace' status. It was in India that he saw the deplorable state of the RAF in the area and at one point even threatened to resign his commission over the situation. He has often been 'credited' with start 'area bombing', but this decision was made before he took over Bomber Command. However, having been given the task, he carried it out with vigour. He also attempted increase the profile of the command and within months of taking over command had managed to mount three '1000 Bomber' raids against Cologne, Essen and Bremen. After the war, shunned by the British authorities, he returned to South Africa and became Managing Director of the South African Marine Corporation (Safmarine). He was eventually honoured when Churchill returned to Downing Street in 1953, but at his own request was awarded a baronet rather than a peerage. He died on 5 April 1984. Certified Copy No 0521 of 1250. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. FRANZ VON LENBACH (GERMAN 1836 - 1904), PORTRAIT OF THE ACTRESS MAXINE ELLIOT oil on canvasframedtogether with a preparatory charcoal sketch, also framed and under glass measuring 112cm x 85cm overallimage size 196cm x 75cm, overall size 128cm x 98cmQty: u2Note: Franz von Lenbach was born on December 13, 1836, in Schrobenhausen, Bavaria. The son of a mason, he trained at Landshut Technical College with the intention of pursuing his father's trade. In 1851 he began working in Munich in Anselm Sickinger’s sculpture studio. Through his older brother, Karl August Lenbach, he met Johann Baptist Hofner, an artist who had trained at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, who formally introduced him to drawing and painting. Having attended the Augsburg Polytechnic for two semesters, between 1852 and 1853, and working for a few months in Albert Gräfle’s studio, Lenbach enrolled in the Munich Akademie in 1854. In 1857 he became a pupil of Karl Theodor von Piloty, an artist famed for his history paintings. The following year, with the help of a scholarship, he accompanied Piloty on a trip to Rome, along with Carl Ebert, Ferdinand von Piloty, and Theodor Schüz. In Italy he made several oil and pencil sketches that would inspire such famous paintings as L’arco di Tito (1860), finished upon his return to Munich. From 1860 onward, he started teaching at the Weimar Art School and devoted himself to reproducing Old Master works on commission for Count Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack. His work as a copyist took him back to Italy as well as Spain, Vienna, and Berlin. At the end of the 1860s, he settled in Munich and became internationally successful thanks to the many portraits he painted of society personalities of the time, including Otto von Bismarck, Peggy Guggenheim, Franz Liszt, and Richard Wagner. At the beginning of the 1870s, he substituted his previous bright palette with darker tones and started using light more effectively, especially in his portraits. His style went on to have a remarkable influence on the art of the time. In 1882 Lenbach was granted nobility, and in 1900 he won the Grand Prix for painting in Paris. He died in Munich on May 6, 1904.Note 2: Maxine Elliott was born Jessie Dermott, in 1868 to a Rockland, Maine, sea captain. She went to New York as a young woman and married comedian Nat Goodwin. Maxine’s beauty and acting abilities led to a 30-year career as a stage actress, and she skyrocketed to fame. For a time, she also operated a New York theater branded with her name, “Maxine Elliot’s Theatre.” Maxine’s life was a wild one. Her intimates included J.P. Morgan, British King Edward VII and Charlie Chaplin, among many others. In 1913 she began dating New Zealand tennis star Anthony Wilding. During World War I she donated her money and her time to Belgian war relief. But Wilding was killed in the war. By 1920, Maxine’s talent, and some help from her wealthy friends, had left her with no need for more money. She retired to a Mediterranean estate in Cannes, France. She wished to age gracefully at her home, Château de l’Horizon. A white art deco villa, it featured a large terrace and a long slide to drop her and her guests from the swimming pool into the sea. Large parties of libertines assembled at Maxine Elliott’s French estate, and it became notorious. Winston Churchill visited from 1933 to 1939. Winston’s wife Clementine had little use for Château de l’Horizon or Maxine and her friends. Clementine viewed them as gossipy and frivolous. Maxine Elliot/Jessie Dermott died at her French estate in 1940 at age 72, far from her Rockland, Maine, beginnings. Her estate now belongs to the Saudi royal family.
19th Century Irish School “Fishing Party at Knockdrin Castle,” O.O.C., c. 1860, 147cms x 34cms (58” x 92). (1) An ambitious painting, depicting a fishing party by a lake, this work bears a faded label giving details of the location: the words ‘A Fishing Party, at . . Levinge’s estate, Knockdrin Castle c 1860’, being just about decipherable. Located six miles from Mullingar, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Knockdrin Castle was home to the Levinge family. A member of the judiciary, the first Sir Richard Levinge played an important role in post-Williamite Ireland, and purchased Knockdrin from the Tuite family. Around 1815, he rebuilt the castle as a large Gothic Revival country house, the gutters of which still bear the Levinge arms. Winston Churchill and his mother were among the many guests that stayed at Knockdrin over the years, participating in hunting parties for which the estate was famous. Although naif in style, this painting is an ambitious group portrait, depicting Sir Richard Levinge and his guests, and ghillies, enjoying in a fishing party. The lake depicted is probably Lough Drin, and the party may have been linked to the completion of a castellated gatehouse in 1860, Apart from a man and woman on horseback, all those present are either seated or standing. One ghillie has a net, while another holds up a fish to be inspected by a man, probably Levinge himself, who holds a split-cane fishing rod. Levinge is dressed in a light blue suit and yellow waistcoat, with a straw boater on the ground beside his feet. To his left, a man wearing a straw boater is lighting a pipe, while to the right, a third ghillie holds a long fishing rod. In the left foreground, six fashionably attired women are seated around a picnic table. Wearing colourful dresses and hats, they are eating and drinking, with one, wearing a yellow dress, holding out her glass to be filled. On the extreme right, a basket of fish is being emptied into a horse-drawn cart, while another fisherman pulls at a line in the water, probably a net. A large earthenware jug sits by the water’s edge. Probably organized to entertain distinguished visitors, the fishing party was clearly a significant event in the estate calendar, so much so that it was considered worthy of recording in a painting. It is a valuable record of society in Ireland in Victorian times. The identity of the artist is not known, but it is likely by an amateur painter, who was seeking to emulate the hunting scenes of well-known artists such as William Osborne. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

Churchill, Winston S. (1874-1965) Typed letter signed as Prime Minister to Major A. A. Stuart Black, 17th October 1941 Single sheet of 10 Downing Street stationery, with Churchill's autograph inscription ‘yours faithfully Winston S. Churchill’ at foot and his autograph salutation ‘My dear Sir’ to head, the letter reading ‘I thank you for your letter of October 12, and I am complimented by your wish to have a tablet placed on the wall of your house recording the fact that I made my first political speech at a garden party at Claverton Manor. I gladly consent to your proposal’, mounted, framed and glazed, mount aperture 22.5 x 18.5cm, verso with label comprising section of Claverton Manor letterhead inscribed ‘here Winston Spencer Churchill on July 26th 1897 made his first political speech’), punch-hole to upper left corner not affecting text By direct descent from the recipient Major Archibald Arrol Stuart Black (1877-1966). From Helensburgh, Major A. A. Stuart Black was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh before joining the Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry and seeing active service in the Boer War. In the Great War he served in France, Gallipoli and Egypt, afterwards becoming a partner in the family shipping firm John Black and Co. Churchill gave his maiden political speech at Claverton House near Bath (now the American Museum) while on leave from India, with the objective of establishing himself as a parliamentary candidate. Captain FitzRoy Stewart, secretary of Conservative Central Office, secured for him the opportunity to address a meeting of the Primrose League to be held at Claverton. Responding to the Workmen's Compensation Bill then before parliament, Churchill's speech focused on industrial relations and contained the assertion that ‘British workmen have more to hope for from the rising tide of Tory Democracy than from the dried-up drain-pipe of Radicalism’. Two years later Churchill was selected as the Conservative candidate in the Oldham by-election, though had to wait until the general election the following year before successfully entering parliament.
