Lot 651

Minton for Thomas Goode, large pair of figural table centrepieces, circa 1876, the central acanthus baluster stem entwined with two mermaid putti, surmounted by a twin handled conical vase and reticulated bowl, on a bombe form socle base with scrolling bracket feet, heavily gilded throughout, painted with the coat of arms of the 4th Baron Abercromby and his wife, interlocking A monongram and Baronial coronet, impressed and printed marks, 66cm high (2)Note: an example of a candelabrum of the same design is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. These examples, commissioned for George Campbell Abercromby and his wife Julia (daughter of Adam Haldane Duncan, Earl of Camperdown), are emblazoned with their joint monogram and the joint coat of arms with supporters, of both the Abercromby and Haldane-Duncan families. From 1874 Lady Abercromby was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, a position she held until 1885. Since Queen Victoria was an avid purchaser of Minton porcelain, in particular figural centrepieces from the Great Exhibition of 1851, it is not unlikely these were a gift to Lady Abercromby from the Queen upon her appointment to her Lady in waiting position.
