A Charles II oak coffer, circa 1670, with a wide panelled hinged lid, the chest with panelled front and sides, including a frieze carved with scrolling serpent motifs and inscribed ‘T…72’, on moulded stiles, 69cm high, 147cm wide, 61cm deep. It seems likely the inscription is interrupted by a later iron lock, this hasp appears of significant antiquity. The number ‘72’ would suggest a date of 1672 for production, and fits with the design of the piece and places it firmly in Charles II period.
