A Charles II oak coffer, circa 1670, with a wide panelled hinged lid, the chest with panelled front and sides, including a frieze carved with scrolling serpent motifs and inscribed ‘T…72’, on moulded stiles, 69cm high, 147cm wide, 61cm deep. It seems likely the inscription is interrupted by a later iron lock, this hasp appears of significant antiquity. The number ‘72’ would suggest a date of 1672 for production, and fits with the design of the piece and places it firmly in Charles II period.
An oak coffer on later stand, the three-panel hinged top above a cabochon carved frieze and triple panel front with floral carved central panels, on a moulded edge base, with bobbin turned supports joined by stretchers on turned feet, 118cm wide, 59cm deep, 113cm highThis was once a good chest but has some condition issues. Some missing inlays to front panels. Small split to edge of top. Lock removed. Candle box missing. Base boards loose and ill fitting. The base is later. Overall knocks and scuffs commensurate with age.
