Lot 2

A late 19th century Khedive’s Sudan Medal (1896-1908), with clasps for Hafir and Firket, with contemporary engraved naming to 1720 Pte J.Brown of the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment. Notes: there a 2 soldiers with the name of ‘J.Brown’ on the relevant medal roll for the 1st North Staffs, but ‘1720 J.Brown’ does not appear to be listed there. The clasp combination for this battalion and regiment is correct, and the naming style is commensurate with the age of medal. Interestingly, a 1720 Pte James Brown of 2nd Royal Warwickshire Regiment was killed in action on October 20th 1914, only 16 days after disembarkation. He is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, and is entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. His home town is listed as Banbury, Oxfordshire, with his next of kin being Ellen Brown (who appears to have resided in Warwickshire). No further details are provided on the CWGC website, and his age at the time of his death are unknown. The medal is mounted by its ribbon to a fabric covered backing card, and an old label to the reverse suggests the item was sold though Spinks around 1968. Condition: good. Good overall toning to the silver, which does not appear to have been over polished. Good tight swivel suspension, with both claps being firmly attached. Some tiny edge nicks to the rim, but this does affect the naming, which is clear.
