Salvador DALI (1904-1989) « Oeil ». 1967.
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish Surrealist Painter. A very good A.L.S., Salvador Dali, one page, brown paper, 4to, n.p., n.d., to Julien Green, in French. Dali sends the present letter in the 1930s announcing that he has sent some books to his correspondent, stating `Cher ami, Voici les livres que je vous avez(sic) promis de vous laisser et que je raporte de Cadaques´ ("Dear friend, Here are the books that I promised to give you and that I am bringing back from Cadaques") To a postscriptum, Dali says `Mes salutations les plus respectueusespour votre seur(sic) et vous, recevez cher ami l´afection(sic) sincere de votre Salvador Dali, a très bientôt´ (Translation: "My most respectful greetings to your sister and you, receive dear friend the sincere affection of your Salvador Dali, see you very soon") A very small tear to the upper right border, otherwise VGJulien Green (1900-1998) American Writer.Anne Green (1891-1979) American Writer and Translator.
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. A good, vintage illustrated signature (´Dali´) on an 8vo page removed from an autograph album, n.p., 1967. To the centre of the page the artist has signed his name, adding a crown at the head of the D and further enhancing the page with a series of ink strokes that could perhaps be interpreted as a mountain range in the background, with a shooting star in the skies, and the gentle waves of the sea in the foreground. Some light, uniform overall age toning and the left edge a little irregularly trimmed. VG
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Dali standing in a three-quarter length pose before his painting Christ of Saint John of the Cross (1951) and holding his cane to a detail on the shoulder of the figure of Christ. Signed (´Dali´) with a hurried signature in blue ink to a lighter area of the image. The contrast of the signature is a little weak, although legible. Loosely contained in a folio presentation folder bound in pale beige cloth and with a stamped title (´Christ of St John of the Cross Autographed by Salvador Dali´) to the front cover. VGDali´s oil painting Christ of Saint John of the Cross is housed in the collection of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. The Glasgow Corporation acquired the painting in 1952, the purchase causing some controversy at the time. The price of £8,200 was considered excessive at the time, however it was less than the £12,000 catalogue price, and included the copyright, which has earned Glasgow Museums back the original cost many times over.
[DALI SALVADOR]: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. An original unsigned 7 x 9.5 photograph of Dali, the gelatin silver print depicting the artist in a head and shoulders pose wearing a pinstripe suit and tie and with a walking cane, Paris, 1966. Photograph by Christian Besnard of Paris and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. VG
[DALI SALVADOR]: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. A good original unsigned 6 x 9 Keystone press agency photograph of Dali in Paris, the original printed caption affixed to the verso stating, in part, ´Salvador Dali....is a great lover of pranks. Today he was seen posing before a circus elephant and carrying a huge plastic ear before the Eiffel Tower. The ear, says Dali, is his new "source of inspiration". He did not explain what the ele`phant meant.....Riding the elephant is pretty Baby Blais wearing a dress named "Coup de Vent" (a perfume launched by Dali)´. The photograph dates from 22nd November 1958. Some light wrinkling and minor age wear, about VG
DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish Surrealist artist. A large and unusual signed and inscribed 9.5 x 7 photograph by Dali, the image showing the surrealist painter seated outdoors, in his home of Cadaques, Catalogne, in a full-length pose alongside his photographer and friend Jean Clemmer. Artistically signed and inscribed in bold purple ink large letters by Dali to the upper right corner, `A Jean Clemmer, Amicalement Dali´, also dated beneath his signature, 1973. DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. An extraordinary signed and inscribed presentation copy of Dali, edited and arranged by Max Gérard and with text in English translated by Eleanor R. Morse, First Edition published by Harry N. Abrams Inc., New York, 1968. The hardcover large 4to edition features over 250 illustrations (a few pages loose) with 80 colour plates and 23 in toned gravure. Signed by Dali with a large and highly attractive signature (´Dali´) to the verso of the front free endpaper in bold gold paint, the signature incorporating a gold crown and measuring approximatelt 23 cm in height. Dali has also added the date, 1969, in his hand beneath his signature. To the background of the page Dali has added a series of original ink drawings which include a man on horseback, a desert landscape with a mountain range in the background (which stretches across the title page) featuring a tall, slender figure, a woman and child walking together across the barren desert, the former holding an object in one oustretched arm, as well as a creature that is highly reminiscent of a manticore. Dali has further added a presentation inscription in his hand, also signing on behalf of his wife and muse, Gala, ´Pour Les Lions Den, Hommage de [Dali; being the printed signature that forms the title of the book] et Gala´, also incorporating a small element of gold paint. Bound in the publisher´s illustrated cloth and with a decorative embossed gold foil dust jacket. An exceptional signed presentation copy with excellent association. Some light age wear, largely to the dust jacket, about VGLeonard Lyons (1906-1976) American newspaper columnist for the New York Post where his column, The Lyons Den, became a New York institution covering theatre, movies, politics and art. A portion of the original wrapper for the book (inscribed ´Mister Lyons´ in black crayon) was retained by the recipient, along with a further sheet of large tissue paper inscribed in large letters in both black ink and pencil ´Mister Liyons will call for it´. Both are included in the present lot.It is highly probable that Dali signed the present book during one of his frequent stays at New York´s St. Regis hotel, where he and Gala occupied Suite 1610 on their annual visits, the room also featuring a studio where the artist could work.
