107.Lehner-Jobst, Claudia and Andreina d'Agliano (eds.), Baroque Luxury Porcelain. The Manufactories of Du Paquier in Vienna and of Carlo Ginori in Florence, 2005, pp. 78-79, fig. 1.The link between China, Vienna, and Florence is evident in the decoration and form of the present lot. 'Bird and branch'-type decoration was very popular at the du Paquier manufactory, as this plate, circa 1722-34, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art illustrates (object number 1995.268.280). The floral decoration of this coffee pot was inspired by Chinese famille verte porcelain dating from the Kangxi period (1662 to 1722). Famille verte wares were among the most prized east Asian wares and as such were copied early on by Europe's porcelain manufactories, of which Meissen's Brühl 'Garniture de Cheminée' from 1730 is another example (sold at Bonhams London, 7 December 2011, lot 76). The shape of the coffee pot, with its domed lid, tapered handle, elongated neck, and floriated bridge recall porcelain wares from the Ming Dynasty, such as this 16th-century ewer in the British Museum, London (inv. Franks.3123).Doccia's close ties with both the Meissen and Du Paquier factories influenced its decoration during the so-called 'first period' from 1737-1758, as artists such as Carl Wendelin Anreiter von Ziernfeld and Giorgio delle Torri were poached by the Marchese Ginori from these factories to work at Doccia. For more information on the influences of Viennese porcelain on Doccia, see Lehner-Jobst and d'Agliano, 2005, pp. 77-103.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

98The decoration is very similar to the pattern known as 'a paesi', painted in red, purple and black, at the Doccia manufactory, and it seems likely that the version in blue corresponds to the description 'a paesi blu' mentioned in the 1757 inventory (Biancalana, 2023, p. 428).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

88From the large armorial service delivered in stages from October 1750 to the Marchesa Laura Isola of Genoa and decorated with the arms of the Marchesa and her husband, Marchese Francesco Marana. This was the second of two services delivered to the Marchesi and the first armorial production of the manufactory. The first service for the Marchese (delivered in 1749) is decorated with the blue-and-white 'a stampa' decoration and the pieces are of much simpler form. Then, in a letter dated 3 October 1750, the Marchesa orders another service '(...) non contento d'avermi favorito l'anno scorso di un servito abbondantissimo bianco, e Turchino, à voluo anche adesso aumentarlo (...)[not content with an abundantly white and turquoise (sic) service you kindly delivered to me last year, I would like to add to it now].'The service is referred to many times in correspondence between the Marchesa and Carlo Ginori: see Andreina d'Agliano (ed.), Porcellane Italiane dalla Collezione Lokar, 2013, no. 86; Johann Kräftner (ed.), Baroque Luxury Porcelain, 2006, pp. 291-292, nos. 116 and 177; and Alessandro Biancalana, Porcellane e Maioliche a Doccia, 2009, p.181ff. for excerpts from that correspondence. The service includes a variety of different elements in the decoration with variations in borders, ornaments around the central cartouches and scattered flowers. Olivia Rucellai notes that these differences are not only due to the various delivery times and painters, but also indicates its exclusive and experimental character as a fun and surprising gift sent by the manufactory's founder to a dear friend (Rita Balleri, Andreina d'Agliano and Claudia Lehner-Jobst (eds.), Fragili Tesori dei Principi - Le vie della porcellana tra Vienna e Firenze, 2018, pp.264-267).Another plate from the service was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 April 2020, lot 116, and a soup plate was sold in these rooms, 7 December 2022, lot 79A.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

La stanza delle meraviglie di casa Colli, 2023, p. 404-407, cat. 91d'Agliano, Andreina. Baroque Luxury Porcelain, 2006, p. 325.This teapot is one of exceedingly few wares made at Doccia with the lizard handle, another example being in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 46.103a, b.. The handle in the shape of a lizard, or salamander, is taken from Chinese wares, such as a Dehua wine vessel of the Kangxi period (1662-1722), published in Ulrich Pietsch, Meissener Porzellan und seine ostasiatischen Vorbilder, 1996, p. 73, cat. 13.The tradition of depicting lizards and salamanders in Chinese art originated in the Neolithic period (10,000-2,200 BCE) and Shang Dynasty (1600-1050 BCE), with jade and bone objects carved in the form of a slender-bodied, wingless creature covered in fish scales with only front legs. These forms were undoubtedly derived from depictions of the mythical loong, more commonly known as the Chinese dragon, and associated with rebirth, prosperity, and the element of water. Later on, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) artists appropriated earlier Archaic bronze objects featuring lizard forms and translated them into porcelain (see a celadon ewer in the Art Institute of Chicago, inv. 1925.1467). Such objects eventually made their way to Europe, finding keen imitators among the continent's nascent porcelain manufactories, not least of which the Du Paquier concern in Vienna (see an early ewer modelled on a Ming prototype, circa 1725-30, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inv. C.33-1957). A rare Du Paquier tankard with salamander handle is in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg (inv. 1914.289 a,b), and another was sold at Bonhams, London, 5 June 2013, lot 55 (ill.).The lizard handle and puce landscape decoration evidence the strong Viennese influence in Florence, executed to perfection in this example by the painter Giuseppe Romei (1714-1785) whose earliest recorded payment for works decorated 'in purpuro' is dated to May 1743 (Biancalana 2023, p. 407).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 6513

Italienisch -- 17. Jh. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
