BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES (1992-1995) - Framed Original Hand-Painted Background "The Man Who Killed Batman" Animation Cel - A moody and evocative preliminary background from Batman: The Animated Series, hand-painted by celebrated artist John Calmette for Episode 51, "The Man Who Killed Batman" (1993).While the final camera pan in the episode reveals a slightly modified background with a "Diamond Exchange" sign over the door, this earlier, almost identical iteration captures the distilled atmosphere of Gotham's skyline with graphic elegance and anticipation. Calmette's signature Art Deco geometry and theatrical use of light are on full display, from the looming vertical scale to the isolation of a single glowing streetlamp.Unusually, the piece is inscribed in the artist's own hand: "406 551, Diamond Exchange, sc. B60, Batman, J. Calmette", a rare dedication for internal production work. Painted on black paper rather than the usual white in animation, this was a deliberate stylistic choice by the art department to enhance the show's noir shadows and dramatic compositions. As a result, the atmosphere isn't layered on in post-production or FX cels; it's embedded in the very base of the painting. Gotham breathes here…quiet, stylised, and waiting to detonate. A beautifully preserved and highly displayable original, this is a compelling acquisition for collectors drawn to the visual world-building of the series as much as the action within it.It comes mounted within a black frame with plexiglass and features a hanging wire on the reverse. The frame displays minor marks, and the lot comes with a Warner Bros. Animation Art certificate of authenticity. Dimensions (framed): 16" x 21.75" x 1" (41 x 55 x 2.5 cm)Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

A Black Forest cuckoo clock, with two train striking movement. Height 40 cm, width 35 cm (see illustration). The clock in our opinion does appear to be complete. It shows signs of age-related wear and there are two dents to the face particularly around the three, four and eight. If you advance the hands the cuckoo will pop out from its door and the bell will ring and then the door will close. Other than this we have been unable to get the movement working.

Height 214 cm, case maximum width 47 cm (see illustration). The case is generally in good condition. It shows some cracking to the veneers but nothing majorly untoward. There are signs of historic woodworm which have been waxed and filled at some point to the trunk door, the left-hand side of the hood below the glazed panel, the cornice front left and right and the right-hand side of the hood below the glazed panel. To the right-hand side of the hood at the front there is a small section of timber missing where the gilded square section swings past on the hinge. The trunk door has a very slight warp most noticeable at the top left-hand side. When removing the hood, you can see that the cheeks have been adjusted and new timbers put in place. The feather from the pendulum is missing and so we are unable to see whether the clock is working.
A Georgian walnut cased longcase clock by John Stancliffe, eight day with moonphase and subsidiary second dial and date aperture. Height including finial 217 cm, with two weights and pendulum (see illustration). The hood is generally in good order. There are some slight losses to the timber behind the right-hand column. We cannot work out how this has happened. There are the usual cracking marks to the veneer but nothing untoward. There are some historic woodworm holes and the left-hand column has a small loss to the front left-hand side. The trunk door is in good order and both the left and right-hand sides of the trunk have cracking marks to the veneers. The base has been cut down at some point and there is some splitting to the left-hand edge, also a small section of veneer missing which is approx. 2 cm x 1 cm square to the left-hand side of this section.

The left-hand door at the top right-hand side has a small section of veneer missing +/- 1 cm square. The darker sections of inlay to the top and bottom doors have dried slightly and shows signs of cracking although none of these are particularly open or anything untoward. All the doors work as they should. On the right-hand side at the cornice at the rear there is a small section of timber missing from some beading approx. 3-4 cm in length. Where the top section meets the base section there is a missing section of timber +/- 6 cm x 3 cm. To the left-hand side at the base, two thirds of the veneer is missing from the base from the back forward.
