English School, late 18th/early 19th century Portrait miniature on ivory, of a lady in profile to the right, wearing a plumed hat, white ruff, pale pink dress and blue shawl, labelled verso 'E.A. (de Beaufort) St. Lawrence, Wife of The Hon. Thomas St. Lawrence, Bishop of Cork', 7.6cm x 5.8cm. Ivory exemption reference: LX1BPX5Z. Condition Report Appears to be some surface scratches around bust and back of shoulder. No obvious chips or cracks. Does not appear to be warped. Some accretions on underside of glass. Frame in good condition. General wear and tear.
18th century, Continental school Oil on canvas Three-quarter length portrait of a lady, wearing a lace-edged red velvet dress applied with pearls, across her forehead are two parchment sheets, one showing an engraving of a traveller in landscape, 70.4cm x 54cm Provenance With John Hurst, Pemberton Road, Victoria, British Columbia in circa 1904, where it was probably sold, along with the contents of the house, and acquired by Gottfrey Bjonsfelt in 1922. The painting was known by the family as 'The Mystery Lady', with the puzzling positioning of the engraving, lying across her forehead and what may be a magnifying glass in her right hand. Condition Report Painting has been extensively restored with large areas of overpainting visible (see images), especially around the edge of the sitter's face, her right arm, around the engraving, to the lace and background, it has also been relined. The engraved parchment appears to be original to the painting, with minimal restoration to the engraved scene. There are two repaired tears/holes to the canvas to the top left and right. Small areas of discolouration to retouching/restoration. Some crazing to paint surface overall. Would benefit from restoration and cleaning. The frame is probably 19th century although has been regilded.With Mackenzie and Co., Toronto, Fine Pictures Restorers and Frame Makers label verso. CHINA: Views of Shanghai During the Great Snowfall of 1893, Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, [1893]. Fist edition, oblong folio (285 x 360mm), three-page preface, 12 collotypes with captioned tissue-guards, original sewn pictorial wrappers, printed decoration to inside. Covers a little rubbed. 'The winter of 1892-3 will be long referred to as the most severe within the limits of Western memory in Shanghai; and as this year, 1893, is the Jubilee of these great Settlements, a pictorial representation of Shanghai in her winter dress will, we trust, be considered both timely and interesting.' This publication was printed by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929), the foremost publisher of collotype books in Tokyo. It is amongst the rarest photo books about ShanghaiProvenance: Arthur Probsthain bookshop, London.

WW1 album of approximately 300 photographs to include aerial reconnaissance images from The Somme, Northern France photographs are dated 1916 and 1917 and include Frenicourt (Fricourt), Lebucquiere and Bapaume with trench location marked in pencil on reverse, numerous portraits of men in military dress, posing outside bunkers etc, arrival of reinforcements, other images titled Arras 1918, Boesinghe 1917, Elverdinghe, officers on horseback and motorcycle and several hand drawn caricatures of officers from 196 battery 1918. Other images in the album include family photographs around Weymouth, the 6th Farnborough Scout Camp trip in 1921 (18 images), Cambridge, yachts and sailing on The Norfolk Broads, skiing trips and a number of images taken from St. Thomas’s Hospital 1920-23, together with report booklet for the Papillon Solders’ Home Shorncliffe Camp 1918, album in half leather with gilt initials
[Naval] An interesting collection of documents relating to the Dutch Destroyer Hr. Ms. Kortenaer (previously HMS Scorpion - taken into active service by the Royal Dutch Navy in 1945), including details of specific assignments, information for crew and a lengthy first hand account of the ship's departure from The Netherlands in 1945 for emergency active duty patrolling around the waters of the Dutch East Indies helping suppress the freedom movement “...more than two thousand Amsterdammers and family saw us off..” then the voyage hit rough waters “..seasickness has taken hold of 90% of the crew...tables & benches fell over...a tin of jam rolls from starboard to port – nobody cares, they are all much too ill!!” and at the lunch table later only 6 of the 15 officers appeared. Loading oil at Gibraltar they encounter other Dutch vessels and minesweepers heading for the Indies. And their arrival at Columbo is met by “..a harbour full of Warships, Battleships, Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Hunters, Minesweepers, supply ships and more, the Kortenaer gets a place alongside an English Hunter”. The 150 newcomers onboard are subject to a Baptism ceremony, where they are are shaved with huge razors and rinsed off with the fire hose before each receiving a certificate as proof they are now true seamen. On reaching their final destination at Tanjung Priok they are welcomed by Hr. Ms.Tromp, Heemskerck, Piet Hein and Van Galen along with three submarines. Detailed assignments include a landing order on Dec. 6th near Soengaihantoe after a cargo of military material was taken ashore and partly stolen, Instructions for the Spotter in Pandang “Operation Emma” Nov. 1946, reports of attacks in Kangean with orders for providing assistance, patrolling the coast around Semarang, assisting on the Island of Mendanau, Kampang Batakan and Katajaan following attacks by armed extremists etc. There are instructions for the correct proceedures during battery attacks, notes for commanders on dress codes, danger areas, patrol reports, entertainment etc on taking leave at Ceylon. Regulations concerning marriages. Quarentine rules. Notes regarding the security add guarding of the Kortenaer and port regulations at Zaandam. Other items include lists of Government furniture provided in a First Officer's cabin, notes for responding to indirect bombardment while anchored and several Marine Reunion dinner programmes, towing problems, a lecture on Destroyers, Combat role compilation guide etc and a photograph with gun crew aboard the Kortenaer. Approximately 100 pages, mostly in Dutch with some English [The Kortenaer returned to The Netherlands in 1948, she supported the United Nations in Korea (1950-53) and served as a destroyer until the late 1950’s before being decommissioned and scrapped in 1962].
