ZADKINE OSSIP: (1888-1967) Russian-born French sculptor. Two A.Ls.S., `O Zadkine´, one page each, 8vo, Paris, 20th May and 25th May 1963, on his personal printed stationery of 100 bis, Rue d’Assas (Paris), to Jean Lesquibe, in French. This is where the complications begin: I wasn't there when the box with the sculpture was brought in, but neither the gouache nor the drawing were there. Why is this so? I beg you to alert Dubois & Fils so they can return these two works to me...") To the second letter Zadkine is reassured and confirms safe receipt of the drawings, saying `J'ai bien reçu les deux gouaches et dessins et vous merci. Si vous venez un jour à Paris ne manquez pas de venir me voir´ (Translation: "I received the two gouaches and drawings and thank you. If you ever come to Paris, don't forget to come and see me.") LEIGH VIVIEN: (1913-1967) English actress, Academy Award winner for Best Actress in 1939 for her role as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (again winning the award in 1951 for her role as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. A highly important group of four typescript documents and an exceptional A.L.S. by Leigh relating to her portrayal of Scarlett O´Hara in Gone with the Wind, comprising -(i) Typescript Document, unsigned, seventeen pages (separate leaves), folio, Culver City, California, 16th January 1939, being the agreement made between Selznick International Pictures Inc. (´Producer´) and Vivien Leigh (´Artist´) for Gone with the Wind (this copy belonging to Leigh´s agent, John Gliddon). The document states, in part, ´FIRST: Concurrently herewith, but as a separate and distinct transaction, Artist is entering into an agreement with Alexander Korda, whereunder Artist is granting to Alexander Korda certain options on her services.....Producer hereby employs Artist, to render her services exclusively to Producer as an actress, performer or entertainer, to portray the role of SCARLETT O´HARA in motion picture photoplay now entitled "GONE WITH THE WIND"......Artist hereby accepts such employment and agrees that throughout the entire time.....she will give her entire time and attention and conscientiously devote her best talents, efforts and abilities exclusively to and for Producer......Artist agrees that she will act, perform, pose, recite and otherwise render her services hereunder when and as directed by Producer, pursuant to Producer´s instructions, direction, and control, and in such countries, and at such studios and/or locations Producer may require....The term of Artist´s employment hereunder in connection with said role of SCARLETT O´HARA shall begin on such date as Producer may hereafter specify (which date, however, shall not be earlier than January 16, 1939, nor later than January 23rd, 1939,) (ii) Typescript Document, unsigned, seventeen pages (separate leaves), folio, Los Angeles, California, 16th January 1939, being an agreement between Alexander Korda (´Producer´) and Vivien Leigh (´Artist´) regarding a conflict of interest in the production of Gone with the Wind (this copy belonging to Leigh´s agent, John Gliddon). The document´s first clause states ´Concurrently herewith, but as a separate and distinct transaction, Artist is entering into an agreement with Selznick International Pictures, Inc., whereunder Selznick International Pictures Inc. is employing Artist to render her services.....as an actress......Said agreement may hereinafter be referred to as "the Selznick Agreement". Concurrently herewith, but as a separate and distinct transaction, Producer is entering into an agreement with Selznick International Pictures , Inc., whereunder this agreement is being coordinated with the Selznick agreement.....referred to as "the Korda-Selznick agreement".......under date of August 15, 1935, London Film Productions Ltd....entered into an agreement with Artist whereunder London Films employed Artist as an actress on the terms and conditions therein set forth.....´, the subsequent clauses largely similar to the concurrent document and covering options for future films, notice of starting dates of work periods, the rendering of services in ´a leading female role´, to work pursuant to the producer´s instructions, dubs, rights, rules of conduct, provisions for illness, disability, breach of contract etc., Leigh´s wardrobe, hairdresser, and transportation, assignments, insurance, retakes and additional shots, membership in the Screen Actors Guild, radio broadcasts, compensation for additional work etc., also stating that ´Artist shall perform the services herein contracted for in a manner that shall be conducive to the best interests of Producer, and generally of the motion picture industry, and if Artist shall conduct herself, either while rendering such services to Producer pursuant to this contract or in her private life, in such manner as to commit an offense involving......local or English laws.....or shall conduct herself in a manner that shall offend against decency, morality.......or in a manner that shall cause her to be held in public ridicule, scorn or contempt or in a manner that shall cause public scandal, then......Producer may......terminate this agreement´ and further stating ´Artist shall receive either star or co-star billing. The name of no other artist appearing in any such photoplay shall appear in type larger in size (either in the height or the thickness of the lettering) than that used to depict Artist´s name´.(iii) Typescript document, unsigned, two pages (separate leaves), folio, Culver City, California, 16th January 1939, being an agreement between London Film Productions and Vivien Leigh, releasing her from her contract with them so that the actress can star in Gone with the Wind (this copy belonging to Leigh´s agent, John Gliddon). (iv) Typescript Document, unsigned, six pages, folio, Bolton Street, Piccadilly, London, 8th November 1939. The document was issued by the solicitors Messrs. J. D. Langton & Passmore to John Gliddon Ltd. and outlines their professional charges incurred between January and November 1939 in relation to negotiations with Myron Selznick (London) Ltd., including ´Attending you, in long interview, when you stated that Miss. Leigh wished to cancel her Contract with London Film Productions Limited and you desired to know what your rights would be..... For their services the solicitors charged a total of £47.5.0. The document is bound with the original green ribbon.(v) An excellent A.L.S., Vivien, five pages, 8vo, n.p. (America), 10th December (1939), to ´My dear John´ (her agent, John Gliddon). Leigh commences her letter by stating that she hopes her correspondent is alright, expressing a desire to hear from him, and remarking ´It feels dreadful over here with all our dear friends having such a miserable time at home, but they assure us it would be very stupid to come home just yet, so we shall anyway do our two separate pictures before we do. They are supposed to start in January´, further adding ´I do hope the contract thing was arranged entirely to your satisfaction, & I am so glad, as it has turned out, that it was arranged on the lump sum basis, as any way other.....would have been terrible for you at the moment, & awfully unfair, as I suppose if I don´t come home yet I shall do the Korda picture here´ and also informing Gliddon ´I have to go to Atlanta for the opening of G.W.T.W. which I am terrified about of course. They keep writing from there to say that the largest crowds in the world will follow us all day!!!! You can imagine how comforting that is´. Leigh concludes by stating that she expects her letter will arrive at around Christmas time (´I do hope you will have as pleasant as one as possible´) and asks Gliddon to write if he can, ´as I would like so much to know what is happening to you & if the office is open etc.´.An outstanding grouping relating to Vivien Leigh´s Oscar winning performance in Gone with the Wind, regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and which (adjusted for monetary inflation) remains the highest-grossing film in history. Y A GEORGE III KINGWOOD, AMARANTH, TULIPWOOD PARQUETRY AND LACQUERED GILT BRONZE MOUNTED BUREAU PLAT PROBABLY BY AN EMIGRE CRAFTSMAN IN THE MANNER OF PHILIPPE-CLAUDE MONTIGNY AND RENE DUBOIS, LAST QUARTER 18TH CENTURY The gilt-brass banded rectangular top inset with a gilt-tooled blue leather writing surface, above a panelled frieze inlaid with Greek-key motif with two frieze drawers centred by masks headed by acanthus flanked by rosettes and opposing false drawers, with lateral writing slides, the lower border with a ribbon-twist mount, the brass reeded incut square tapering legs headed by laurel swags with square sabots terminating in castors, with a paper label to the pine panelling to underside inscribed in ink 'Brynkinalt RM' 72.5cm high, 122cm wide, 63cm deep Provenance: Possibly supplied to Arthur Hill-Trevor, 2nd Viscount Dungannon (1763-1837) or acquired by Arthur Hill-Trevor, 3rd Viscount Dungannon (1798 - 1862) for 3 Grafton Street, London, thence by descent at Brynkinalt Hall, Denbighshire until sold, Of Royal And Noble Descent; Sotheby's, London, 19 January 2017, lot 382, where acquired by present owner. Although this sophisticated desk, with its 'Etruscan' decoration and interlaced key frieze, has the outward appearance of a French bureau à la grec, a number of constructional idiosyncrasies help to identify it as an unusual example of English craftsmanship. Until recently the bureau plat formed part of the resplendent Hill-Trevor collections at Brynkinalt Hall in Denbighshire and is most likely the output of an émigré ébéniste working in London in the last quarter of the 18th century. London had long tradition of attracting émigré craftsman with the perpetual cycle of European political and religious turbulence of the 17th and 18th centuries spurring their arrival. The lure of the capital reached new heights following the favourable conclusion of The Seven Years' War (1756-1763), a pan-European conflict which did little to dampen the appetite for French fashions in Britain. The maker of the present bureau plat would certainly have had excellent knowledge of French workshop practices and prototypes, namely the output of the celebrated Parisian cabinet-makers Phillippe-Claude Montigny (1734-1800) and René Dubois (1737-1799). The goût grec style swept to popularity in France from the mid-1750s with the celebrated suite of furniture supplied for the collector and financier Ange-Laurent Lalive de Jully. Veneered in kingwood, amaranth and tulipwood and decorated with rosette and laurel swag mounts, the Brynkinalt bureau plat closely follows a well-documented group of bureau à la grec by Montigny and Dubois. However, the Brynkinalt bureau plat diverges in several distinct ways which preclude the possibility of a French origin. Whereas French-made bureau plat use oak, the present desk employs pine in the construction. Further, the oak-lined drawers have front-to-back oak drawer bottoms, where French antecedents would have the grain running side-to-side. The dovetails, with the pronounced fan-shaped tails, are distinctly un-French and quite idiosyncratic being covered by a very thin veneer. The original locks are English, and the lacquered-gilt-brass banding to top, mounts, capping and castors (French models typically employ sabots without castors) all present as English derivatives or casts taken the originals. The presence of a distinctly English 'rococo' influenced ring-pulls to the writing slides further anglicises the French character of the present lot. Interestingly, an almost identical version of this model, sharing the same constructional traits but lacking brass reeding to the legs, is preserved in the collections of the Marquesses of Bute at Mount Stuart, Scotland. The Bute bureau plat is almost certainly from the same émigré workshop and points to a definitive group made for the most prominent families of the day. The present desk formed part of the collections of the Hill-Trevors at Brynkinalt Hall, Denbighshire, on the English-Welsh borders. The family fortune was built at first by Sir John Trevor (1637-1717), an unscrupulous lawyer-turned-politician, who twice held the position of Speaker of House of Commons before being unseated because of a bribery scandal involving the East India Company. He also served as Master of the Rolls 1685 to 1689 and from 1693 until his death in 1717. The financial gains Sir Trevor accrued in these prominent positions allowed him to acquire two London houses on St Clements Lane and Trevor Square, Knightsbridge. All four of his sons predeceased him and his estates, including Brynkinalt, passed to his daughter Anne who married Michael Hill of Hillsborough in Ireland.Arthur Hill, 1st Viscount Trevor (1694-1771), later Arthur Hill-Trevor, 1st Viscount Dungannon, was the second son and also pursued a political career, this time in Ireland as Chancellor of the Irish Exchequer and Commissioner of Irish Revenues. Arthur built Belvoir house in Ireland to designs of Christopher Myers in circa 1750. His son, the Hon. Arthur Hill Trevor (1738-1770), predeceased him also, making him an unlikely candidate for the acquisition of the present bureau plat. Instead, the Dungannon estates, including Belvoir and Brynkinalt, passed to Arthur Hill-Trevor, 2nd Viscount Dungannon (1763-1837) who inherited the title at the age of eight. In 1795, at the age of thirty-two, he married the Hon Charlotte Fitzroy, daughter of General Charles FitzRoy, 1st Baron Southampton (1737 -1797) and grand-daughter of Charles FitzRoy, 2nd Duke of Grafton (1683-1757), and consequently sold Belvoir Park choosing to live between No. 3 Grafton Street, London (built by the Augustus Henry FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton (1735-1811) to designs of Robert Taylor in 1767) and Brynkinalt Hall. It is conceivable to bureau-plat was acquired before or during this phase of ownership as the Viscountess was a woman of highly cultivated taste and oversaw the significant re-modelling of Brynkinalt which had not been altered since the early 18th century. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.Observations include: the leather to the top has a different gilt tool edging and is either different to the leather on the sliding ends or is faded; the leather to the top also has cracks along the underlying constructions joints; some ormolu mounts are slightly loose eg the edging to to the top of the desk, one of the swags (with a later screw), some of the ribbon edging has vacant holes from missing pins, one brass inlay to one leg is sprung; it is not possible to remove the right frieze drawer as there is a fixed peg/screw preventing it from sliding out; there are two keys that operate the two different locks that suggest one is a later replacement; there is some evidence of old worm; some fading to the back. The Greek key parquetry and ormolu mounts to all sides. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition - they are a vital part of this report. After two years at Westminster School, he entered the navy in 1844 and spent four years in H.M.S. Collingwood on the Pacific Station, mainly in South American ports, where he picked up a working knowledge of Spanish. Many things in the service were distasteful to him, but he remained in it for a further three years in order to join H.M.S. Assistance as a Midshipman under Captain Austin on his Franklin Search Expedition of 1850-51 (Arctic Medal). After a year of wandering (1852-53) among the Inca ruins of Peru, which made him a life-long friend of the Peruvian people, Markham joined the civil service, and in 1854 was transferred to the board of control of the East India Company. In 1860 he was charged with the collection of young cinchona trees and seeds in the forests of the Eastern Andes, and with the acclimatisation of the plants in India. The difficulties were great, but the result was a complete success, leading in time to the supply of quinine at a very low price. From 1867 to 1877 he had charge of the geographical work of the India Office. In 1868 he accompanied Sir Robert (afterwards Baron) Napier as Geographer on the Abyssinian Campaign. He was present at the capture of Magdala, and it was he who discovered the body of the Emperor Theodore (Abyssinian Medal). In 1871 he received the C.B., and in 1873 was elected F.R.S. Markham took an active role in promoting the revival of Arctic Exploration, and sailed in 1875 as far as Greenland with the expedition of Sir George Nares, on which occasion his cousin Sir Albert Hastings Markham was second-in-command. In 1877, he left the India Office and retired from official life, only to redouble his geographical and historical studies, travelling widely and writing incessantly. He had joined the Royal Geographical Society in 1854, and maintained a role as one of its honorary secretaries for 25 years (1863-1888). He became president of the society in 1893, and during his 12 years’ tenure he vigourously directed its policy of encouraging exploration and geographical education. He was frequently consulted by the government, on issues such as the difficult question of the boundary between British Guiana and Venezuela. He received the K.C.B. in 1896. For the next few years, Markham threw heart and soul into the promotion of Antarctic exploration, securing funds by urgent appeals to public and private sources. On the joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, which was responsible for the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901, it was Markham who selected Commander Robert Falcon Scott as leader, pressing his strong preference that the expedition should consist of naval men under the sole command of a naval officer, with a small civilian scientific staff. The expedition was highly successful, but Markham took little interest in later South Polar achievements (he was not a supporter of Shackleton) until Captain Scott planned the expedition in the Terra Nova in 1910, when his former ardour was rekindled. Captain Scott drew much of his inspiration and encouragement from Markham, and in one of his final farewell letters wrote, ‘Tell Sir Clements I thought much of him and never regretted him putting me in command of the Discovery.’ For many years, Sir Clements Markham’s reputation was established throughout the world as the leading British geographer and his achievements were recognised by his many awards, not least the gold Founder’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Sir Clements Markham died in London on 30 January 1916. Amongst the many memorials is a bronze bust, presented by the government of Peru, which today stands guard at the portals of the Royal Geographical Society’s main entrance to Lowther Lodge in Kensington. Sold with a first edition of The Life of Sir Clements R. Markham K.C.B. F.R.S., by Admiral Sir Albert Markham K.C.B., London 1917.
