AN 18 CARAT GOLD ALBERT CHAIN WITH TWO EARLY 19TH CENTURY FOB SEALS The curb link chain with lobster claw and ring bolt clasps, suspending a 19th century serpent split hoop with two 19th century fob seals, one with a ropetwist hooped mount with an oval banded agate matrix carved with an owl, the other with a scalloped foliate setting with a shield shaped agate matrix carved with a boars head above a ducal coronet with gothic initials HE, with purple foil backed setting , chain with partial 18 carat gold hallmarks Size/dimensions: chain 36cm long Gross weight: 37.4 grams The boar's head seal is possibly for the Evans family of Salop (Shropshire), and the owl seal with unusual mount detail is possibly for the Saville family or the Calvert family. Condition Report: The chain has some wear as commensurate with age and use, the clasps may not be original as the attachments are not soldered but they are stamped with partial 18 carat gold marks. The nail piece on the ring bolt clasp has some off and so it can't open at this point. The snake hoop has some light wear commensurate with age and use, the fobs are in good condition, some general wear, including slight thinning to the suspensory loops. The ring bolt and fobs have not been tested for gold carat due to the destructive nature of the test. Surface testing as gold. One fob: The blazon of the crest: issuing from a ducal coronet or a boars head proper. Monogram: H E This is a relatively common combination of charges and to make any sensible progress I have used the monogram HE to isolate a smaller group of families. The most likely appears to be the EVANS family, who are recorded in indexes as being of Salop (Shropshire). Some usage of this crest in a branch of the EVANS family who largely emigrated to the USA (c1807), first settling in New York but later marrying into other settler families in Virginia. They appear to have as head James EVANS who was born in 1777 at High Littleton, Somerset before marrying in 1798 in Gloucester: Millicent DAVIES from Stroud. The family's first children were born in Gloucester before their move to the USA. Second fob: The blazon of the crest: on a grassy mount vert an owl proper.Unusually the owl is shown standing on a grassy mount which I expected to help identification, unfortunately I can find no other cases of this. I assume that the engraver has performed under some artistic licence. Possibilities are: One of the may branches of the SAVILLE family (including the Earl of Mexborough), a number of which settled in Maryland USA; Descendants of Joshua BARNES who in 1700 was a Regis Professor at Emanuel College Cambridge; The CALVERT family. Condition Report Disclaimer
