THEATRE: A Staffordshire Pottery Flatback Theatre Group, modelled as Catarina and Diavolino from “Catarina, ou la Fille Du Bandit”, by Dudson Factory, mid 19th century, she on point, standing in an arbour, beside a seated minstrel, with a bridge and swan below, 19cm high. Refer: “Dudson Staffordshire Figures c1815-1865 by Audrey Dudson & Alison Morgan” page 77 figure 120. “Catarina, ou la Fille Du Bandit” was a ballet by Perrot. This figure was dubbed the “Blue Parsley” figure by Audrey Dudson. The piece was modelled from a lithograph of the ‘Polka ‘ which shows Catarina and her lover Diavolino. Catarina, was the leader of a band of brigands, loved by both Diavolino and a slave, the artist Salvator Rosa. It was first performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 3rd March 1846. Third figure with loss to front, possibly a hookah pipe.
DOGS: Three delightful small Staffordshire Foxhounds, circa 1830-50, attributed to the Dudson Factory, including a seated and alert hound, chained to a peg, on a yellow topped base, 12.5cm high; also a seated hound (sometimes called a 'dismal hound'), on a blue topped oval base, 9 cm high; also another similar looking slightly upwards, on a naturalistic oval base, 10cm high (3) All of the dogs have some firing faults such as cracks and inclusions. One of the dogs has also lost the tip of its tail which has been repainted. One has a small chip to ear.
HISTORICAL: An early Staffordshire Pearlware figure, modelled as the Widow of Zarephath, circa 1820; also a figurine of 'St Mark', 19th century, manner of Ralph Wood, the widow, seated beside her child and a barrel, on a mottled base, painted in colours and inscribed 'Widow', 23cm high; St. Mark praying beside a cockerel and book, 20cm high (2). The widow is based on the Bible: 1 Kings 17:7-16. A meeting with Elijah (a pair to this figure). A signed almost identical figure signed by Ralph Wood was sold at Bonhams 18th May, 2011, lot 121. Other factories copied this piece, and the Dudson Factory is often noted along with Obadiah Sherratt. Note the incorrect spelling of Widow. 'Widow' boccage missing. ARTISANS: Two Staffordshire Pottery Figures, including a Shepherd; and Shepherdess, circa 1830-1840, he modelled standing holding up a ram, attributed to James Dudson, 18cm high; she seated shearing a ewe, attributed to Lloyd Shelton, 14cm high (2). ARTISANS: A fine early Staffordshire Figure, modelled as a Sheep Shearer, circa 1835-40, attributed to Dudson Factory, well modelled seated and finely painted, 17.5cm high Firing hairline cracks to inside base and the sheep may have a tiny chip to left ear. Condition report Firing crack inside base
SCOTTISH: A rare Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figure, modelled as 'Rob Roy', mid 19th century, probably the Dudson Factory, he standing in Highland dress, with kilt and staff on a rocky outcrop over two resting sheep, 27cm high An identical piece is in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Robert Roy MacGregor was a Jacobite Scottish outlaw, who later became a romantic Scottish and Jacobite folk hero. His grave is a popular tourist destination today.
