THE WATCHES & ARCHIVE OF SHEILA SCOTT O.B.E. (1922-88), 'BRITAIN'S QUEEN OF THE AIR'Given all that could be written about this remarkable aviatrix, the cataloguer turns firstly to Encyclopedia Britannica:'Sheila Scott was born on 27 April 1922 at Worcester, Worcestershire and was a British aviator who broke more than 100 light-aircraft records between 1965 and 1972 and was the first British pilot to fly solo around the world. After attending a Worcester boarding school, Scott became a trainee nurse at Haslar Naval Hospital (1944), where she tended the wounded during World War II. In London she appeared in small roles for theatre, film, and television and worked as a model (1945–59). In 1960 she earned her pilot’s license, bought an old biplane from the Royal Air Force, and won several races, capturing the De Havilland and Jean Lennox Bird trophies for that year. To pay for her flying, she became a demonstrator for Cessna and Piper aircraft.Scott first flew around the world in 1966, covering about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) in 189 flying hours. She set world records when she flew between London and Cape Town (1967) and across the North Atlantic Ocean (1967), the South Atlantic Ocean (1969), and from the Equator to the Equator over the North Pole (1971). After her record polar flight, she made a third around-the-world solo flight, earning her 100th world-class record. She wrote I Must Fly (1968) and On Top of the World (1973; U.S. title Barefoot in the Sky, 1974). Scott was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE; 1968), and she received the Royal Aero Club’s Gold Medal (1972). She died at London on 20 October 1988.'Further notice should be made the fact that Scott was likely the inspiration to Ian Fleming for the alluring 'Pussy Galore' in Goldfinger, played by Honor Blackman in the 1964 movie. Her flights with NASA in 1971 are also worth mention:'Sheila Scott is pictured here with her Piper Aztec 'Mythre', in which she made her world and a half flight in 1971. On this flight, she became the first person to fly over the North Pole in a single engine plane. She carried special NASA equipment for a communications experiment testing the Interrogation Recording and Location System (IRLS) of the Nimbus polar orbiting satellite. The IRLS equipment, a Balloon Interrogation package, transmitted data on Scott’s location during the 34,000 mile (~55,000 kilometer) flight to the Nimbus satellite, which relayed it to NASA’s ground station at Fairbanks, Alaska and then to a computer center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Sheila Scott’s record-making, historic flight confirmed the satellite’s ability to collect location data from remote computerized and human-operated stations with a unique “mobile platform” location test.'She was Roy Plomley's castaway on Desert Island Discs in January 1967, her luxury being tobacco seeds to ensure a never-ending supply of smokes. Scott was always seen as a somewhat quirky individual and flew barefoot, claiming she could feel the controls better. She always signed of 'Happy Landings!' and we hope these treasures will find much the same.Sheila Scott's famous Rolex GMT-Master 'Pepsi' stainless steel automatic dual time wristwatch, first worn on her famous 1966 record-breaking long-distance flightRolex, stainless steel automatic dual time wristwatch with date and leather bracelet, this rather worn, Ref. 1675, GMT-Master 'Pepsi', with bakelite bezel, stainless steel Oyster case, screw-down crown and back the reverse engraved 'SHEILA SCOTT', blue and red 24-hour calibrated bezel, No. 1255812, the applied triangular and dot indexes upon the face 'factory' luminated with radium marker, 40mm, in running condition at time of cataloguing but would likely benefit from a service, a most historic object, very fineProvenance:Philips, December 1989 (Sold by Order of Sheila Scott O.B.E.).Scott wore this very watch on her famous flights. Her image - and this watch - was the first to ever market sports watches for wear by women. Scott commented that it was '...a marvelous watch.'It is no surprise that 'Pussy Galore' also wore a 'Pepsi' in Goldfinger.…

COLWELL, STEPHENThe Ways and Means of Payment: A Full Analysis of the Credit System, with its various modes of Adjustment. Philadelphia: Lippincott and Co., 1859. Publisher's purple cloth in leather-backed slipcase and chemise. First edition, a remarkable annotated presentation copy of a notable American work on the theory of money, inscribed by the author to the manufacturer, inventor, and philanthropist Peter Cooper. 9 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches (23 x 14.5 cm); xii, 644 pp. Lacking a section at the head of the spine, many corners turned down by Cooper. This is Colwell's "most valuable contribution to economics ... Colwell rejected the quantity theory of money ... and took advance ground in behalf of a credit currency adjustable to the volume of business." (Encyclopedia of Social Sciences). This copy is of especial importance for the extensive of penciled notes added in the margins by Peter Cooper. Cooper is now best remembered as the founder of the Cooper Union in New York City. He had an abiding interest in monetary theory, and in 1876 he ran for president of the ticket of the Greenback Party because he believed his candidacy would bring to the public his views on currency. His annotations range from arrows and underlining to detailed marginal comments on the text. An exceptional and interesting association copy of a pioneering American work on economics. No condition report? The Romantic Spirit in German Art, published by National Galleries of Scotland et al, 1994-5; Clay (Jean) Romanticism, New York: Phaidon, 1981, among other volumes on Romanticism, including art books on Caspar David Friedrich (qty) The Library of Roger Cardinal Roger Cardinal (1940-2019)Roger Cardinal was one of Britain’s most distinguished art historians, best known for defining what is generally known as Outsider Art - that is, art by people with no formal training. He began his career as a lecturer at the French department of the University of Manitoba, Canada, subsequently moving to Warwick University and finally to the University of Kent at Canterbury, where he taught for fifty years and held a professorship.Roger Cardinal was not only a leading authority on Outsider Art, but also on Surrealism. He was a prolific writer and a master of literary style. His eloquent, percipient writings include several books on a wide range of subjects such as Outsider Art (1972), German Romantics in Context (1975) Figures of Reality (1981), Expressionism (1984), The Landscape Vision of Paul Nash (1989), The Cultures of Collecting (1994), and Kurt Schwitters (2011). He also acted as a curator and was a regular contributor to art-historical publications.Cardinal’s interest in art lay in its margins - the neurodiverse, psychotic, uneducated, autistic, self-taught and ‘other’. His fascination with artists such as the violently psychotic Adolf Wölfli lay in their creativity rather than in the sensationalism of their lives. Certainly, it did not lie in the resale value of their work. That outsider art should have its own multimillion-dollar annual fair in New York and specialist departments at Christie’s auctioneers ran quite contrary to Cardinal’s thinking.Much of Roger Cardinal’s library has recently been donated to the Tate Gallery including the handwritten diaries that he kept his whole life. Cardinal often used books as working tools, heavily annotating in the margins - as with many volumes in the current sale. The library offered reflects Cardinal’s varied interests and fluent command of French and German. Alongside a large collection of art reference works in his specialist subjects, we also find collections of books on fairy tales and science fiction.

ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher who influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe. An extremely rare A.L.S., `J.J. Rousseau´, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 24th April 1762, in French. An excellent autograph letter by Rousseau, referring to his wound and to his encyclopedia, stating in part `Dans la supposition qu´il vous a plu de faire, Monsieur, que ma blessure n´était qu´une piqure d´aiguille, vous avez eu raison de trouver étrange que je tardasse à vous remercier de ce que vous avez bien voulu faire pour mon encyclopédie; mais quand je vous aurai dit que je souffre encore de ma main et que j´écris avec peine, j´espère que vous excuserez ce retard qui très assurément ne viens point d´ingratitude.´ (Translation: "In the supposition that you were pleased to say, Sir, that my wound was only a needle prick, you were right to find it strange that I was slow in thanking you for what you were kind enough to do for my encyclopedia; but when I have told you that I still suffer from my hand and that I write with difficulty, I hope that you will excuse this delay which most assuredly does not come from ingratitude.") Ainsi je prends insensiblement mon parti...´ (Translation: "Rereading what I have of the last two volumes, I see that there are plenty of errors, and that they cannot be issued so, do even less without an errata than the first two... Fortunately we have plenty of time to take it easy, and I see more and more that this matter will not be done so soon. So I am gradually making up my mind...") Before concluding Rousseau states in part `Je ne vous envoye point encore mon encyclopédie parce qu´il faut l´envelopper, faire des paquets, travail qui effraye beaucoup...´ (Translation: "I am not sending you my encyclopedia yet because it needs to be wrapped and packaged, a very frightening task...") Paper with watermark. With blank integral leaf. Very small minor age wear, otherwise G to VG
