Catalan School. Vall de Boí. Romanesque. Circa 1160 - 1175"Virgin from a Calvary"Carved and polychromed wooden sculpture.41 × 11 × 7.5 cm.The relevance of our sculpture is evident, as it is cataloged and reproduced in the monumental encyclopedia Catalunya Romànica, volume XXVI, page 373.According to Jaume Barrachina's file, the sculpture's location at the time of publication was unknown, and its existence was only known through an old photograph from the Arxiu Más (Mas CA-13 162). Barrachina places it geographically in the western Pyrenees and dates it to the second half of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th centuryThis piece is fully Romanesque in style, and notably, the Virgin retains her original polychromy. She is depicted frontally, with her hands crossed over her chest. Her shoulders are narrow, and she has an elongated, slender face with large, slanted eyes. She wears a simple red polychromed tunic and a blue mantle decorated with red rosettes, each outlined with white dots and bearing a white cross at the centre. The mantle falls from her head, covering it while revealing a little of her hair at the forehead, parted into two locks. One of her shoes has lost much of its texture; the other shows traces of black polychromy. On the reverse, a vertical hollow could suggest the figure was used as a reliquary. This magnificent image may be associated with significant examples of Catalan Romanesque sculpture, such as the Virgin from the Calvary of Tragó de Noguera, kept in the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) in Barcelona. In that composition, the Virgin Mary and Saint John flank Christ on the cross. The similarities with this Virgin are striking, particularly in the way Mary is portrayed with both hands crossed and the highly schematic Romanesque style. That said, in our opinion, this sculpture is of superior quality and craftsmanship. We should also consider the Mare de Déu de Ger, also part of the MNAC collection and originally from the parish church of Santa Coloma de Ger. It shares significant stylistic similarities with this figure: the long, slender face, narrow shoulders, and mantle that falls from the head. Chronologically, they also belong to the same period. Returning to Jaume Barrachina's description, he notes that it is an image of the standing Virgin Mary dressed in a tunic, veil, and mantle. Her hands are crossed at her waist, and she holds her left hand with her right. This forms a characteristic image of a Calvary. Barrachina compares it with the previously mentioned Calvary of Tragó, which, as he specifies, is somewhat later than ours. There is another similar one that is also out of its original context and conserved in the Episcopal Museum of Vic (see Catalunya Romànica, vol. XXII, p. 90). 90).Barrachina concludes by stating that, due to the limited available material (he had available at the time) it is challenging to provide a precise stylistic approximation. Nevertheless, the elongated shape of the head, facial features, and the tip of the headdress on the forehead undoubtedly refer to a sculpture from the western Pyrenees.Provenance: Private collection, Spain.Reference Bibliography:Catalunya Romànica, vol. XXVI. page 373. Text by Jaume Barrachina.

ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher who influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe. An extremely rare A.L.S., `J.J. Rousseau´, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 24th April 1762, in French. An excellent autograph letter by Rousseau, referring to his wound and to his encyclopedia, stating in part `Dans la supposition qu´il vous a plu de faire, Monsieur, que ma blessure n´était qu´une piqure d´aiguille, vous avez eu raison de trouver étrange que je tardasse à vous remercier de ce que vous avez bien voulu faire pour mon encyclopédie; mais quand je vous aurai dit que je souffre encore de ma main et que j´écris avec peine, j´espère que vous excuserez ce retard qui très assurément ne viens point d´ingratitude.´ (Translation: "In the supposition that you were pleased to say, Sir, that my wound was only a needle prick, you were right to find it strange that I was slow in thanking you for what you were kind enough to do for my encyclopedia; but when I have told you that I still suffer from my hand and that I write with difficulty, I hope that you will excuse this delay which most assuredly does not come from ingratitude.") Ainsi je prends insensiblement mon parti...´ (Translation: "Rereading what I have of the last two volumes, I see that there are plenty of errors, and that they cannot be issued so, do even less without an errata than the first two... Fortunately we have plenty of time to take it easy, and I see more and more that this matter will not be done so soon. So I am gradually making up my mind...") Before concluding Rousseau states in part `Je ne vous envoye point encore mon encyclopédie parce qu´il faut l´envelopper, faire des paquets, travail qui effraye beaucoup...´ (Translation: "I am not sending you my encyclopedia yet because it needs to be wrapped and packaged, a very frightening task...") Paper with watermark. With blank integral leaf. Very small minor age wear, otherwise G to VG

Dschamali (Jamali Yazdi) Frühe iranische Enzyklopädie der Natur Farrukh-nama-i Dschamali. Persische Handschrift auf Papier. Iran, 18. Jahrhundert. Jh.]: Farrukh-nama-i Dschamali , verfaßt 598H/1201.' 37 : 24,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 237 aquarelllierten Zeichnungen. - KOLLATION: 91 Bll. Magnificent holidays with a passionate row, an annual menaion and a two-row cycle of icons of the Mother of God - a kind of encyclopedia of the Mother of God images. A majestic monument to Christianity and late Russian icon painting, where in one image the annual and Mother of God universe of Orthodoxy is revealed, full of sacrifice. With the epicenter of suffering and resurrection, the testimony of all the upcoming saints and with hope in the miraculous images of the intercessor. The Virgin Mary series is interrupted by the marks of Unexpected Joy, Joy of All Who Sorrow, the Sign and Coronation of Mary - milestones of the communion and growth of spiritual truths. The Passion Series is composed of: the Ascension of Mary, the Old Testament Trinity, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Raising of Lazarus, the Washing of the Feet, the Last Supper, the Flagellation of Christ, the Imposition of the Crown of Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross and the Entombment. Particularly attractive is the rare completeness of the lists of icons of the Mother of God, which can serve as an encyclopedia of the Mother of God images. The bright decorative painting on a golden background sounds excitingly solemn and life-affirming. Cypress board, gesso, tempera, gilding. Russia. Second half of the 19th century. Dimensions: 53x44 cm. Width: 44cm, Height: 53cm, Depth: 3cm, Weight: 10kg, Condition: Good, Material: Wood, gesso, gilding, tempera

This antique 19th-century vibrant hand-tinted engraving presents a vibrant composition of various exotic bird species perched on a winding tree. The engraving is labeled TODUS, TRINGA, TROCHILUS, TROGON. at the top, referencing bird families that include todies, sandpipers, hummingbirds, and trogons. The lower portion identifies individual species, meticulously illustrated in rich color and fine detail. The engraving bears the mark J.
