MARIANA VICTORIA OF SPAIN: (1718-1781) Infanta of Spain by birth as daughter of King Philip V od Spain, and later Queen of Portugal 1750-1777 as the wife of King Joseph I. She acted as regent of Portugal in 1776–77, during the last months of her husband's life. Mariana Victoria was the mother of Queen Maria I of Portugal, Maria the Mad Queen. A very fine A.L.S., `Mariana Victoria´, two pages, small 4to, Estoril, 12th March 1749, to her brother King Charles III of Spain & Charles VII of Naples & Sicily, in Spanish. The Queen of Portugal is full of sorrow after the death of her niece, Prince Maria Isabel Ana, elder child of King Charles III, stating in part `Hermano de mi vida y de mi corazón... siento el grande pesar que has tenido de la muerte de mi querida sobrina, es cierto que ha sido esta noticia de grandisima pena para mi pero podemos tener el consuelo de que goza de una felicidad eterna...´ (Translation: "Brother of my life and my heart... I feel the great sorrow you have felt at the death of my dear niece. It is true that these news have been a source of great sorrow, but we can take comfort in the fact that she enjoys eternal happiness.--") Further the Queen sends all her support to the rest of the family and asks her brother not to forget their faith in God. Accompanied by the original 12mo envelope, in poor codition, with a black wax seal to the verso. Overall age wear and toning, otherwise about GPrincess Maria Isabel Ana of Naples and Sicily (1743-1749) was the third daughter of Charles III of Spain & Charles VII of Naples and Sicily and his wife, Maria Amalia of Saxony, later Queen of Spain. Maria was the third daughter and the third consecutive one who died in childhood at the age of five.
