LADY AND THE TRAMP (1955) - Tramp Original Production Cel Signed by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston - An original production cel of Tramp from Walt Disney's Lady and the Tramp, autographed by legendary animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two of Walt Disney's famed Nine Old Men.Lady and the Tramp was a landmark film in Disney's golden age: the studio's first animated feature shot in CinemaScope, a widescreen format that allowed for sweeping, cinematic storytelling. GUNDAM FRANCHISE (1979-PRESENT) - Sandrock Custom Original Production Cel - An original production cel featuring the Sandrock Custom, one of the most recognisable mobile suits from Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. The film marked the end of the original Wing storyline and brought closure to one of the franchise's most internationally beloved entries. It also represents a key transitional moment in anime history, as one of the last major Gundam projects to be fully animated using traditional cel techniques before digital production took over. Cels from Endless Waltz showing the upgraded Custom units are increasingly sought after. This cel exemplifies the bold, high-contrast visual language that made Endless Waltz so iconic. Hajime Katoki's reimagined designs brought a new stylisation and flourish to the original Gundam Wing units. In particular, Sandrock Custom's sleeker profile, upgraded Heat Shotels, and broadened shoulders gave the unit a more imposing silhouette while still remaining true to Quatre Raberba Winner's original mobile suit. The Sandrock Custom is seen here mid-assault, with its Heat Shotel raised and shield arm extended. It captures the mecha's signature charge pose with an explosion of animated energy. Surrounding the Gundam is an abstract FX overlay of shattered debris and environmental energy. A dramatic visual used in 1990s anime to heighten the force of Sandrock's movement, bursting outward as if from the moment of impact. "C/2" is handwritten in the top right corner. One panel has red ink on the reverse, which has bled through to the white lettering of "Goldfinger". However, the poster is in very good overall condition. THE LAND BEFORE TIME (1988) - Littlefoot and Mother Original Production Animation Cel Setup - An original production cel setup used in the making of The Land Before Time, featuring Littlefoot cradled tenderly in his mother's mouth - one of the most emotionally powerful moments from this beloved animated classic. This animated feature was a landmark project that saw master filmmaker Steven Spielberg and producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall lend their creative powers to the animation genre through Universal Pictures. As one of the defining projects of Amblimation, the film blended Don Bluth's expressive, richly animated style with Spielberg's instinct for heartfelt, cinematic storytelling, setting a new benchmark for animated family films in the 1980s.Apart from the endearing character interaction, the facial expressions make this cel particularly attractive; all three characters' eyes are open, a subtle yet powerful nuance in the 24 frames-per-second world of hand-drawn animation. Daddy Topps and a young Cera also appear at the left-hand edge, adding depth and scale to the scene. The cel is labelled "LB 882, 002, 34, 143" along the bottom edge. This carefully selected setup is paired with a matching litho background and features the official studio seal from the MCA Universal/Amblin art programme. Lot 394

PINOCCHIO (1940) - The Blue Fairy Original Production Pencil Drawing - An original animation drawing of the Blue Fairy from Walt Disney's Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy appears only briefly in the film, but her role is vital: she brings Pinocchio to life and sets the story's emotional arc in motion. As a character, she needed to appear both ethereal and grounded, human enough to be believable, yet with an unmistakable sense of magic. Supervising animator Hamilton "Ham" Luske, one of Walt Disney's most trusted creative leads, was responsible for her animation. Luske's work on the Blue Fairy refined the realism he brought to Snow White just a few years earlier, and his delicate handling of performance gives this character such lasting impact. To help guide the realism needed, actress Evelyn Venable was used as the live-action reference model. Her graceful features and composure made her an ideal match for the Blue Fairy's elegant design. There has long been speculation that she also provided the voice, though no formal credit was given.Drawings like this, where the clarity of line reveals so much about performance, staging, and intent, were considered the backbone of the animation process. Walt Disney believed the drawing was the true artistry, with cels merely a byproduct of that foundational work and a 'tool of the job'. While most production cels were destroyed or reused, drawings of this calibre were often archived, studied, and retained. It is rendered in graphite with subtle coloured pencil accents on her wings. She is portrayed with classical poise and serenity, mid-motion, and her expression is full of grace. The paper is labelled "53" in the lower right corner, and a handwritten annotation reads "tongue". There are some minor rips around some of the paper edges. Lot 392

PINOCCHIO (1940) - Framed Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket Original Production Cel on Courvoisier Background - An original production cel setup from Pinocchio (1940), Disney’s second animated feature and a landmark in the evolution of character animation and visual storytelling. This piece captures the heart of the film, with Pinocchio receiving earnest advice from Jiminy Cricket, his soon-to-be-official conscience. Both characters have been hand-inked (note the delicate coloured ink lines and surface renderings) and hand-painted on trimmed celluloid, then expertly set against a Courvoisier airbrushed background, complete with hand-applied shadowing to ground the characters in their environment. This custom background presentation was a hallmark of Courvoisier Galleries, Disney’s appointed art distributor in the 1930s–40s, and remains one of the most sought-after formats for Golden Age production art.The scene is particularly charming, the full-figure characters with large scale, expressive poses, and strong interaction, emblematic of Disney’s early narrative brilliance. Cels of this calibre, particularly from Pinocchio, are increasingly scarce.Presented in a substantial, timeless frame with Courvoisier’s original descriptive label preserved on the reverse, this is a standout example of Disney’s early efforts to present animation as fine art. Its survival offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of cinematic history, capturing the enduring charm of Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket in a scene that continues to resonate with audiences. Dimensions (framed): 38.25 cm x 40.5 cm x 4 cm (15" x 16" x 1.5")Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

THE LOST CONTINENT (1968) - Hand-Painted Pre-Production Artwork by Tom Chantrell - A piece of hand-painted pre-production artwork for Michael Carreras' 1968 Hammer adventure film The Lost Continent. Created by renowned British artist Tom Chantrell, this artwork differs from the final design seen on the UK Quad. It was likely that Hammer commissioned this piece for marketing, and including a touch of glamour (a typical design element seen in many Hammer posters) was a tactic used to entice studios and help secure funding for the film. The artwork shows a risque image of a lady caught in the tentacles of a giant squid-like creature and a bold orange title. It was created using watercolours and gouache with hand-embellished detailing in acrylics and comes presented in a card mount. There are a couple of creases along the bottom edge of the artwork and light edge wear on the mount. Dimensions (in mount): 51.25 cm x 65.75 cm x 0.2 cm (20.25" x 26 " x 0.25")Artist: Tom ChantrellSold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

FANTASIA (1940) - Mickey Mouse "Sorcerer's Apprentice" Model Cel - A rare model cel of Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, one of the most enduring images in Disney history, from the landmark animated feature Fantasia. The film was one of the first features to combine classical music with hand-drawn animation in an ambitious, abstract, and cinematic experiment that pushed the limits of animation as a fine art. While indistinguishable from screen-used production cels, this example is believed to have been created as a model cel, a reference piece used by animators or the ink and paint department to maintain consistency in character design and colour across multiple scenes. Model cels from Fantasia are exceptionally scarce, and this piece radiates the magic and innovation that made the film a technical marvel of its time. This hand-inked and hand-painted cel captures the moment Mickey turns to grab the iconic blue hat from the unforgettable "Sorcerer's Apprentice" sequence. Mickey's expression, gesture, and red apprentice robe are rendered in full classic detail, carefully trimmed, and applied to a richly toned hand-painted presentation background evocative of the film's moody, mystical setting. The quality of the brushwork and colour layering across both cel and background is exceptional. THE DEVIL RIDES OUT (1968) - Hand-Finished Printed Concept Artwork by Tom Chantrell - An unused concept design by Tom Chantrell for Hammer Horror's The Devil Rides Out (1968) starring Christopher Lee and Charles Gray. Hammer fans will be familiar with Chantrell's perhaps more apt design of the Devil on a winged horse which features on the final UK Quad posters. However, in this piece, he chose to focus on the sacrificial story elements which drive the film. This printed design has been hand-finished by Chantrell where he has touched-up the highlights of the flesh, the headlights of the car as well as painting the title itself.Mounted on art board with some light surface scratches and tears including a 5cm tear on the top border. ROBIN HOOD (1973) - Sir Hiss and Little John Original Production Cel and Background - An original multi-layer production animation cel and background setup featuring Sir Hiss and Little John signed by animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston from Walt Disney's animated film Robin Hood.A complete and cinematic setup with expressive, full-figure character cels, layered production artistry, and direct lineage to two of the studio's most influential animators. It is a true highlight for collectors of Disney's hand-painted era. This moment captures Sir Hiss confronting Little John, disguised as a fortune teller, about the missing jewels from Prince John's ring, only for Little John to flash a triumphant grin and reveal them. The lot includes three layers of hand-painted production cels used in the making of the film and appearing just frames apart in the same scene, and a hand-painted production background from a slightly later scene in the same sequence, where Little John admires the royal carriage's solid gold hubcaps. All three acetate sheets have handwritten production numbers along the bottom edge.Completing the setup is a xerographic overlay cel used to convey detail in the earth and foliage, a technical approach made possible by the xerographic ink-line process developed by Disney for One Hundred And One Dalmatians (1961) and carried into the studio's 1970s productions. The cel is signed in black ink by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two of Disney's legendary "Nine Old Men," whose expressive animation and character timing helped define Robin Hood's tone and visual charm. Their work on this film, and across the golden age of Disney animation, shaped the studio's enduring legacy. ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1951) - Mad Hatter and March Hare Tea Party Original Production Cel and Presentation Background -Few scenes in animation history are as instantly recognisable or as gleefully anarchic as the Mad Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland (1951). This is a wonderfully iconic production cel setup featuring the Mad Hatter and March Hare on acetate, numbered #30 bottom right corner, and placed on a richly detailed, hand-painted presentation background crafted to evoke one of the most unforgettable scenes in Disney history, the Mad Tea Party celebrating their "Un-Birthdays".This setup captures the chaos, charm, and surreal whimsy of the moment when Alice meets the Hatter and Hare at the nonsensical tea table. Though the scene lasts only a few minutes, it has become one of the most quoted, referenced, and instantly recognisable in the entire Disney canon. "Mad as a Hatter" is more than a turn of phrase here; it's a cultural landmark. The interaction captured in these cels is superb. Both characters are mid-gesture, energetic, and perfectly staged for display. Their expressions, timing, and silhouette all work harmoniously. Both figures are original hand-inked, hand-painted production cels, trimmed to the image and placed on a beautiful, meticulously hand-painted presentation background that reflects the tone and palette of the original film and perfectly anchors the scene.A vibrant, display-ready piece from one of Disney's most artistically adventurous films, combining classic animation flair with bold, surrealist design. Davis considered Maleficent his most challenging and rewarding assignment. STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) - Reward Poster - The launch of home video machines during the late 1970s gave birth to the crime of video piracy. The machines afforded thieves a more convenient way to record and spread their illegal copies and allowed audiences to watch movies in the comfort of their homes. Unsurprisingly, the popularity of the Star Wars franchise and its much-anticipated third instalment led many a bootlegger to steal cinema film reels. To combat this, 20th Century Fox and Classic Cinemas created this 'Reward' poster offering 5,000 for any information about thefts and warning that any VHS tape copies found for sale were illegal. The original posters were printed in sets of two on one piece of paper (British Double Crown size) and then cut after printing, making one border thinner than the other. This example is folded with some creasing, nicks and tears around the border, and a few very small areas of paper loss on the edges. ASTERIX CONQUERS AMERICA (1994) - Asterix, Obelix and Multi-Character Original Production Cel and Pan Original Layout Drawing Setup - A richly detailed pan layout setup from the animated feature Asterix Conquers America (aka Asterix In America), expertly composed using seven original hand-painted production cels over a large-format pan background drawing.Asterix Conquers America was the first Asterix film produced entirely outside France and marked an ambitious expansion of the franchise. With its distinctive style, international tone, and strong visual storytelling, it brought the iconic Gauls to a new generation. While this specific arrangement does not appear "as is" in the film, each cel and layout element was created for the production and has been thoughtfully assembled by the studio to showcase the visual dynamism and character design that define the feature. The studio officially released this piece as part of the Asterix Art Program, curated to preserve the series' legacy and offer collectors a rare look into the production process.Set in a Native American village deep in the New World, the artwork brings together an ensemble of key characters: the defiant Asterix stands mid-conversation alongside the wise druid Getafix (Panoramix), recently kidnapped and flung across the ocean by Roman forces. To their side, the young tribal girl, while a wary villager and medicine man, and the elaborately dressed village chief observe from either end, the ever-faithful Obelix acting as both mediator and muscle in the scene. The pencil layout background stretches across, laying out the ceremonial grounds and tipi village in a sweeping perspective. These layouts were integral to shot planning, camera movement, and cel positioning. The scale, clarity, and theatrical composition make this setup an ideal display piece, a scene that captures the drama and charm of the film's aesthetic. Multiple production reference numbers are handwritten along the bottom edge of the cels, and several annotations are written on the drawing. The official studio stamp is present on the bottom right corner of the layout, authenticating its origin. A special offering for fans of the franchise and for collectors who value the immediacy, scale, and storytelling power of original animation art. SWORD IN THE STONE, THE (1963) - Merlin Holding Wart Original Production Pencil Drawing - An original production drawing of Merlin and Wart from Walt Disney's 1963 animated film The Sword in the Stone. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, The Sword in the Stone was the final animated feature released during Walt Disney's lifetime. This is a rare opportunity to own a moment of genuine connection between mentor and protege in the Disney canon and from a film that often flies under the radar. This artwork is likely a working drawing used for precise positioning and character staging. This drawing features Merlin, the eccentric wizard, gently grasping the young Wart (Arthur) by the shoulders. The interaction between them is carefully composed, and both figures are expressive and well-posed within the camera framing lines. The characters are rendered in graphite and red pencil on 16-field 3-peg animation paper, with Wart drawn in red pencil. This was a common animation technique used to distinguish overlapping characters or to define placement in multi-character interactions. Wart's placement, partially unfinished in red, indicates he may have been finalised in a separate drawing for inking, while this composite would guide the animators and layout team. The registration peg holes remain intact, and a camera alignment line is visible across the top and bottom margins. There is a minor tear on the bottom edge of the paper. SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (1937) - Grumpy Original Production Pencil Drawing - An original production drawing of Grumpy from Walt Disney's 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. As part of the first full-length cel-animated feature film in history, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs marked a watershed moment in animation and cinematic storytelling. Rendered in graphite with red and green colour pencil accents on 12-field 5-peg animation paper, this is a superb example of Disney's early character animation. The ink and paint department used the red and green lines to denote the different colour inklines, part of the labour-intensive hand-inking process employed at the time. The sheet is production-stamped with "2001, 10A, 25" and is numbered "44" in the lower right, matching Disney's meticulous scene and frame tracking system. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) - Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and Sultan Hand-Painted Cel Setup and Production Background - A hand-painted cel setup featuring the beloved enchanted objects Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and Sultan, the footstool from Walt Disney's animated film Beauty and the Beast, placed over the actual screen-used production background.Although Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney feature to use CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) for final colouring, thereby eliminating the traditional cel painting from the production process, Disney recognised collectors' interest in physical artwork as they have done since the 1930's with supplying the Courvoisier galleries. For the 1992 Sotheby's The Art of Beauty and the Beast auction, 249 unique setups were created, using hand-inked and painted cels based on original animation drawings, carefully matched to actual production backgrounds used in the film. The result: a hybrid of artistry and authenticity, offering collectors the closest experience to owning a piece of the finished film. This lot was part of the Sotheby's auction. This piece is a true collector's piece. THE LORD OF THE RINGS (1978) - Multi-Character Doors of Durin Production Cel Setup on Presentation Background - A rare multi-character production cel setup from Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, showcasing one of the film's most iconic scenes: the Fellowship gathered before the luminous Doors of Durin, the hidden western entrance to Moria. The visual style is unmistakably Bakshi, richly stylised, dramatic, and grounded in realism. And with good reason; every frame of the film was rotoscoped, where live-action footage was traced and adapted by hand, giving the characters weight, nuance, and subtle human movement that pushed beyond contemporary animation's cleaner, more buoyant traditions. The result was an evocative and cinematic interpretation that continues to be both revered and hotly collected. The setup consists of Merry and Pippin, Gandalf, and Boromir on three separate cels with the remaining characters (Frodo, Sam, Legolas, Gimli, and Bill the Pony) on a printed presentation background. While Aragorn features in the setup in the final film, he is absent in this example.Production setups featuring multiple central characters from the film are especially scarce, and this moment, where the individual cels collectively lend so much to the narrative of the scene, stands out as a superb and atmospheric piece from one of the most ambitious and stylistically distinct animated features of its time. THE LION KING (1994) - Simba Cel and Production Background - A dramatic setup comprising the hand-painted production background used in the making of The Lion King, paired with a unique, hand-painted cel of young Simba created by Disney artists expressly for the Sotheby's auction "The Art of The Lion King" held in New York in 1995.These hybrid setups are original production backgrounds from the film, matched with newly hand-painted cels crafted using traditional methods. Each cel was carefully chosen from the scene to complement and capture the emotional essence and impact of the moment. This particular setup depicts the tense moment just before the wildebeest stampede, a pivotal scene that showcases the film's dramatic storytelling and technical prowess. The composition emphasises the scale and vulnerability of young Simba. After The Little Mermaid, Disney transitioned to digital ink and paint processes, meaning traditional hand-painted cels were no longer part of the production pipeline. After decades of developing an animation art collector's market, Disney wanted to provide collectors with stunning, screen-used setups despite no production cels for the film actually existing. The setup bears the Walt Disney Company gold seal, authenticating it as an officially created and released artwork for this special auction. Dimensions (mounted): 66.75 cm x 82.5 cm (26.25" x 32.5")Additional Provenance: Lot 134, Sotheby's The Art of The Lion King Auction, 11th February 1995Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide. This item will ship from our LA facilityVAT Status: US
