The present painting shares many of the same features found on the portraits of ‘Ali II by the Bombay Painter: the style of the face, lips and eyes as well as some of the textile details, such as the curtain, which were favoured by The Bombay Painter. However, a slight compressing of the proportions of the body and stiffness in certain details suggests that this painting is more likely the work of one of his followers.Condition Report: The corner of this painting are lacking. Some creases visible. Craquelure to pigments overall. Pitted, stained. Some minor losses now repainted. The department would recommend an inspection of this lot in person before placing any bids.

Juz 25 from a large 30-part Qur'an, Provincial Mamluk or Ilkhanid, 14th centuryArabic manuscript on paper, 31ff., with 5ll of muhaqqaq per page, fully vocalised, gold and polychrome illuminated header and large lotus flower marginal roundels to opening folio, gilt verse markers, rebound using earlier boards from another manuscript, margins renewed and extensive paper repairs, Folio 44 x 31 cm.Provenance: Ex Schøyen Collection MS 4468, offered with four other volumes from the same set at Sotheby’s as Lot 405 on 27 October 2020; Sam Fogg, London, 2000.The cataloguing note in the Sotheby's sale above states a number of folios are later replacements using European watermarked paper, probably nineteenth century Italian. Among the watermarks are 'Ranie... Bonazzi', 'AC' and a device consisting of two opposing crescents surmounted by three stars within a serrated domed frame. This monumental manuscript is part of a group of ten surviving parts from a single set, with 19th-century paper repairs, restoration, and replacement folios, all with similarly enigmatic bindings. The Ilkhanid attribution of these bindings is optimistic - given the condition of the textblocks, it seems more likely that a 19th-century owner used boards from a similarly monumental Mamluk Qur’an to renew this manuscript. Folio, 5ll of muhaqqaq per page, fully vocalised, with remnants of illuminated frames on opening page, gilt verse markers, rebound using earlier boards from another manuscript. Margins renewed and extensive paper repairs. Ex Schøyen Collection MS 4468, offered with four other volumes from the same set at Sotheby’s as Lot 405 on 27 October 2020. Note that the bindings, though similar, are not uniform, with significant variation in pastedowns used especially.Provenance: Ex Schøyen Collection MS 4468, Norway since 1990s; Check notes from viewing below and others… n.b. replacement leaves.https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/arts-of-the-islamic-world-india-including-fine-rugs-and-carpets/five-volumes-from-a-large-quran-manuscript
