An embroidered shawl (phulkari), pachranga Shalimar bagh, Punjab, first half 20th century, silk floss on light maroon cotton ground, the large concentric lozenges in silk floss in tones of saffron, red, green and cream against tangerine ground, one pallu hatched in similar colours, the other with bold chevrons forming palmettes in similar colours within large square panels240 x 131.5cm.Provenance: Private UK Collection acquired in the 1950s by the vendor's father, an academic. The works were brought to the UK when the family relocated here in 1966. Footnote : Phulkaris were ceremoniously exchanged between various members of the family during marriage festivities. These included the passing down of phulkaris from mother to daughter, or grandmother to granddaughter, or in the form of the highly particularised vari da bagh, a type of embroidery that was gifted by the groom's family as part of marriage arrangement. Soft, untwisted silk floss thread called as “pat” came from various places like Kashmir, Bengal and even from Afghanistan, and Turkistan, but were dyed locally in Amritsar and Jammu, and women could obtain this from nomadic merchants. Partition in 1947 changed the availability of these silk flosses.Further reading: Aryan, S. & B.N. "Untitled" - JAMINI ROY (1887-1972).An elegant painting by celebrated Indian modernist Jamini Roy (1887–1972), depicting a stylized female figure cloaked in soft curves and simplified lines. Executed with a restrained palette of ivory, blue, and red on earthy paper, the work exemplifies Roy’s distinctive blend of Bengali folk traditions and bold linear modernism. The serene composition is framed in a minimal black border, with the artist’s signature in Bengali script at the bottom right. Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of the most influential and pioneering modern artists of 20th-century India. Trained in the Western academic style at the Government College of Art, Calcutta, he later rejected European realism in search of a distinctly Indian visual language. Deeply inspired by Bengali folk traditions, especially the Kalighat Pat paintings, Roy developed a unique style marked by bold lines, flat vibrant colors, and simplified forms. He focused on themes drawn from rural life, Hindu mythology, and indigenous art, making his work accessible and rooted in Indian identity. His contribution to the Indian art movement was not just stylistic but also philosophical—he sought to democratize art by distancing it from elite patronage and bringing it closer to the common people. Honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1955, Roy remains a seminal figure in Indian art history, celebrated for blending tradition with modernist ideals. With frame: Approximately 27.5 x 22.5cmProvenance: Private collection from a distinguished W London lady.

George Smart (English, 1774-1846) known as The Tailor of Frant, or a follower of George Smart (possibly named R Marshall), 'Old Bright The Postman', probably early-mid 19thC, a cut and assembled fabric and leather collage, showing the old postman in a felt coat and trousers leading a donkey along a road through Frant, with his satchel and holding two letters, with Frant church and a house behind him, framed and glazed in a period black painted frame, and brown paper glued to the back with an applied photocopied label and a further label cellotaped on, together with a copy of the book 'George Smart, The Tailor of Frant: Artist in Cloth & Velvet Figures', by Jonathan Christie, published by Unicorn, 2016, in which the picture is shown, frame 43cm wide, 39.5cm high.PROVENANCEChristie's, The Judkyn/Pratt Collection of British Folk Art, 8th November 1995.A Folk Art dealer, London. The Property of a GentlemanLITERATUREThis picture is illustrated and discussed on page 113 of the monograph book 'George Smart, The Tailor of Frant: Artist in Cloth & Velvet Figures', by Jonathan Christie, published by Unicorn, 2016. Author and noted George Smart expert Christie states that "...This Postman is considered the earliest known example of this subject by Smart. ... The historian and writer James Ayres knew this picture well and indeed described it as one of the earliest of its type. The metallic flags appear in later versions as does the clump of trees perched on top of the hill on the right." However, since the publication of this book, opinions on the authorship of this picture differ, with the author of the above book and another expert now believing this to possibly be the work of another hand in the style of George Smart. A clue may lie in the photocopied label glued to the back of the brown paper. In old inked writing, this reads 'the Frant Postman Returning home from the tunbridge Wells 93 years of age by R Marshall'. This could be a photocopy of an old, original label under the brown paper, which is stuck down to the backboard presumably irretrievably covering the original label, if it is indeed there - and if the two are connected. FOOTNOTE: George Smart (1774-1846) is a key figure in English Folk Art. He lived in the village of Frant, around 2 miles south of Tunbridge Wells. As well as offering tailoring services, he made fabric covered dummy boards and pictures that he sold from shelves attached to his house, 'Smart's Repository', on the main road. His fame grew and he was included in period tourist guidebooks to Tunbridge Wells. In 1820, he sold works to His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, and thus then considered himself 'By Royal Appointment'. Although there are no records of how many pieces Smart made, and no idea of how much they cost, it is thought that only around 100 of his works survive - all in public or private collections. There are no records of R. Marshall, or any period artists producing work in Smart's style and featuring his characters. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire not only a work in superb condition showing Smart's most beloved local Kentish character.Old Bright, the Frant postman, is arguably Smart's most loved, mosty frequently shown character. Delivering post was Old Bright's second career - before, he was known as the 'Sweeper of The Walks', (The Pantiles). This example contains all the detail of Smart's depiction of this popular character, from the buckles on the shoes to his leather satchel, the furry grey hair, tired demeanour, handwritten letters with their cryptic part-hidden addresses, and more.CONDITION: Overall very good to excellent considering the age and materials of the piece. No apparent missing components. Although the donkey's eye does not have a bead and his coat has no buttons, there are no patches (such as remains of glue), where these may have been held. There is some fading and darkening all over, as to be expected, and a couple of small patches of losses to the pile of the felt used for the road and the field, and a fence post and the church, as photographed. There are two cuts to an area of the field behind and above the milestone, presumably (like with the milestone itself), to add an sense of form or undulation. Remarkably, the gilt paper components used for the flags and church clock tower hands all survive in place. Not examined out of its frame or under a black light, but the brown paper backing has been cut and lifted in one area.Packing & ShippingLet us take the hassle of sorting out packing and shipping from you. 4 Large 19th century buttons with 4 different sporting scenes. This fun and whimsical set is pictured in the BBB by Hughes and Lester on page 659. You can read the entire background on that page. ▲ Edward Burra (1905-1976) The processionwith 'E J Burra' estate stamp u.r., pencil and watercolour, with a pencil drawing of dancers verso65 x 50cm, unframedProvenance: Sotheby's, London, 'Works from the Estate of Edward Burra, Lady Ritchie of Dundee and Associated Owners', 3 July 2002, lot 256;the property of a private collector.Edward Burra was known for his surreal, satirical depictions of modern life. Born in London and raised in Rye, Sussex, he battled chronic rheumatoid arthritis, which shaped both his lifestyle and artistic practice. Despite physical limitations, he developed a distinctive style, favouring large-scale watercolours. His early work focused on urban nightlife, revelling in the grit and glamour of brothels, bars and cabaret scenes.Burra’s fascination with Hispanic culture led him to Spain in 1933, during the turbulent years of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939). The country was undergoing radical political change - secular reforms, social unrest and rising tensions that would eventually lead to civil war. He was captivated by Spain's dramatic cultural traditions, particularly its religious processions, bullfights and theatrical Catholic rituals. Spanish art profoundly influenced him, from the eerie mysticism of El Greco to the stark realism of Goya and Zurbarán. Burra immersed himself in the culture, learning Spanish and surrounding himself with Spanish literature. He also travelled to Mexico, where the vibrant folk traditions and imagery of the Day of the Dead reinforced his fascination with ritual and the macabre. His undated drawing 'The Procession' showcases his signature compositional technique. The eye is led diagonally from the upper left to the lower right, where figures seem to move beyond the paper’s edge. This sense of momentum is key to his later religious-themed works. Burra’s cartoonist-like approach is evident - while most of the piece remains an outline, he selectively colours a few figures, particularly a striking, red-skinned face, adding both drama and mystery. This technique teases the viewer, leaving them wondering how the final piece might have looked, a hallmark of Burra’s ability to balance intrigue and narrative depth.Condition ReportThere are several very small, repaired tears to the upper edge. A few light spots of foxing starting to emerge. Very light surface dirt. There is a little pale yellow discolouration in the lower right corner.

One-of-a-kind expressive watercolor and ink artwork by South African artist Hargreaves Nutkwana, depicting a surreal figure holding a candle against a subdued ochre-toned background with a small house in the distance. Nutkwana's distinct style, characterized by fragmented geometric forms, fine linework, and fluid color washes, evokes themes of identity, movement, and introspection. The figure's exaggerated facial features and exaggerated proportions align with the artist's unique approach to abstraction, blending elements of Cubism and African folk art influences. Nutkwana works in oil, gouache, ink, wash, pencil, charcoal, wood, plaster of Paris, clay and terracotta.
