Henry Hugh Armstead RA (1828-1905) collection of pen, ink and wash designs for sculptures at Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff, Wales, the artwork comprising fifteen large sheets with designs of angels and of male figures including seated images of St. Matthew, St. John, St. Luke and St. Mark, Bishop Ollivant, St. Paul, St. James, Sir Philip the Deacon and further images of winged creatures and the Spirit of Evil etc, some sheets having more than one image, two of the designs of St. Michael and an angel gargoyle for use in the Bute Mausoleum intended for St. Margaret of Antioch, Roath - the images dated between the 1860s and 1870s signed or initialled by Armstead and inscribed Jno Prichard Esq Llandaff, largest image 98 x 65cm (sheets with varying degrees of wear, tears and loss, several backed on linen) A period of Victorian restoration was undertaken on the Llandaff Cathedral by John P. Seddon and John Prichard, the latter a Welsh architect influenced by Augustus Pugin. Many Pre-Raphaelite artists contributed designs including Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown, with stained glass created by Morris & Co. Henry Armstead was a sculptor and illustrator who was very much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, the images offered here were among those in the archive of W. Clarke, Sculptors and Monument Masons, who were involved in the Cathedral’s restoration
