Mouseman and the Yorkshire Critters: a mid-oak auctioneer's gavel and stand by Colin 'Beaverman' Almack (1930-1996) of Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe - the gavel with an octagonal head and tapered, ring turned handle, on a rectangular stand with chamfered edges and a relief-carved beaver signature to one end, the gavel 24.5cm long, the block 25.8 x 8.3cm.* Colin 'Beaverman' Almack was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He worked for Thompson during the 1940s and 1950s. He set up his own workshop in 1960 and adopted the beaver as his signature. * In good condition overall - no cracks or chips to the wood, colour / polish even throughout. One small indented bruise to the wood to one side of the gavel head.
ENGLISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY Sir Frederick Gustavus Fowke Bart (1782-1856) seated in full masonic regalia with a white glove on one hand and a gavel in the other, oil on canvas, 125cm x 99cmNote: Sir Frederick was a leading freemason, baronet and politician of Lowesby Hall near Leicester. He served as masonic Deputy Provincial Grand Master for Leicestershire from 1833 to 1851 and became Provincial Grand Master from 1851 to 1856. He was also Senior Grand Warden for the United Grand Lodge of England in 1821.
Elaborate late Victorian ram’s head table snuff mull, silver coloured metal mounts (not hall marked) the mull set into the top of the ram’s head, embossed with thistles and foliage, set with oval facetted glass ‘stone’ and with gilt interior, silver chains retain the rake, spoon, rabbit’s foot and wooden gavel, horns bear 2 vacant shield shaped escutcheons, glass eyes, 2 ball ‘feet’ screwed to the bottom of the horns which terminate with thistle shaped finials set with facetted glass stones. Good condition.
An 18th Century Treen Snuff Mill, together with a similar gavel, desk seal, brass travelling inkwell, match box holder and slow match (qty)Snuff mill - may have been broken at the pedestal and mended. There has been a re finishing at some point with a brownish patina. Large age related split to the foot and some losses to its edge. Heavy general wear from use. Inkwell - pergaps missing a pen component from the end. Unscrews properly and internal blade remains intact. Some dents.
