Parisian women.- Prostitutes.- [Saint-Hilaire (Émile Marco de)], "Modeste Agnèse, l’une d’elle". Biographie des Nymphes du Palais Royal, first edition, folding hand-coloured frontispiece (a little trimmed affecting head text), some light spotting, slightly heavier to title, 20th century half morocco, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, book-label on pastedown and stamp on endpaper, very slightly rubbed at extremities but a lovely copy overall, 12mo, Paris, [F. -P. Hardy for] Librairie Française et Étrangère, 1823. *** Rare, Library Hub records just one copy found at the British Library of the second edition (published in the same year as the first). No other copies of this edition in commerce. A fascinating guide to sex workers around the Palais Royal. The preface opens with an unusually forthright declaration: "The issue of prostitution as long been resolved. Governments must not only tolerate, but also protect these brothels which, by abandoning the courtesans, become courts of sex...".The work includes individual entries for different named women. Many document the visual descriptions that are usual of this type of work, but some have curiously intimate details of how they came to their line of work.

ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE INTEREST: DISTANT, W.L. - 'RHOPALOCERA MALAYANA': A DESCRIPTION OF THE BUTTERFLIES OF THE MALAY PENINSULA published by West, Newman & Co, London, and also D. Logan, Penang, 1882, retaining colour lithographed plates, with ink annotations throughout, believed to be that of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), the volume also annotated to front flyleaf 'L. Richmond Wheeler….Bound - Chowrata Malay School, Penang, May, 1937', later red half leather bindingProvenance: By repute, purchased from a second-hand bookshop in Southampton (UK) in 1978, along with a copy of Wallace's autobiography 'My Life' (1905) which contained an autographed letter of his (see Lot 169 in this auction). This volume has been inspected by Dr George Beccaloni, Director of the Wallace Correspondence Project. The annotations have been examined by an expert on Wallace's hand-writing who came to the conclusion that the handwriting was "probably that of Wallace.'' Wallace possibly used the book when he wrote a review of it for the journal Nature in 1882 - he was an admirer of Distant and corresponded with him on various issues.Supporting evidence of the date is found in a leaflet included in the book advertising the publication of The Butterflies of India, Burma and Ceylon (Marshall & Nicéville, Calcutta Press 1882) which is a comprehensive guide to butterfly species found in the regions of India, Burma (now Myanmar), and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). There is also, curiously, a pressed flower inside the back cover of the Distant book, provisionally identified by Sir Ghillean Prance as a species of Poppy, which was almost certainly put there by the British educationalist, philosopher of biology and botanist Leonard Richard Wheeler (1888-1948), into whose hands the book seems to have passed after Wallace's death. We shall never know the exact circumstances, but it seems feasible that Wallace brought this volume back from Malaya and that somehow it passed to Wheeler. Wheeler seemingly took the book to Penang with him where he worked as a Schools Inspector for the British Colonial Service. He has written on the inside cover of the book "L R Wheeler 1936, Bound - Chlororasta Malay School, Penang May.1937". Wheeler returned to Britain in 1945 to avoid the advance of the Japanese forces into Penang.Note: Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was one of the leading evolutionary thinkers of the 19th century. A contemporary of Charles Darwin, he independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection, travelled the world collecting specimens including courageous solo trips up the Amazon and even addressed humanity's place in the universe. William Lucas Distant (1845-1922) was inspired to write a study of natural history on a whaling trip to the Malay Peninsula with his father in 1867. He was editor of the journal The Zoologist and was employed by the British Museum of Natural History between 1899 and 1920, where he worked mainly on bugs (Hemiptera). He also collected many species of insects during a four-year stay in South Africa, many of which were described in his 'Insecta Transvaaliensia' (1900-1911).

Registration No: V47 LTG Chassis No: SCFAB123XYK300335 MOT: April 20251 of just 2,385 Coupes madeGlorious sounding 6-litre V12 engine allied to automatic transmissionA stylish and much underrated grand tourer93,500 miles from new and 5 former keepersIntroduced at the March 1999 Geneva Salon, the Vantage version of Aston Martin's landmark DB7 broke with marque tradition by using a wholly different engine rather than a punchier version of its sister car's existing powerplant. Breathed on by Cosworth, the newcomer's 'heart' was a 5935cc 48-valve, all-alloy V12 that developed 420bhp and 400lbft. Initially available with a choice of six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, the DB7 Vantage boasted a 165mph top speed. Priced at £92,500, Aston Martin's flagship came with central locking, electric windows/mirrors, traction control, ABS, air-conditioning, front airbags, alarm/immobilizer and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. A mere 2,385 Coupe versions were produced.Finished in Silver with Cream leather upholstery, chassis 300335 was first registered as ’33 TG’ on December 1st 1999. Entering the current (sixth) ownership a year ago, the 2+2-seater is warranted to have covered 93,500 miles from new. Starting readily during our recent photography session and sounding decidedly purposeful, the Aston Martin is deemed by the seller to be in ‘good overall’ (paintwork, interior trim) or ‘very good overall’ (engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, bodywork) condition. Riding on correct-type alloy wheels and offering a huge amount of ‘show and go’ at the guide price, ‘V47 LTG’ pleasingly retains its original book pack (complete with service book). Registration No: PJ 2716 Chassis No: OH10067 MOT: ExemptBegan life as a Supercharged model complete with factory T3 Tourer coachworkRemodelled in period with an altogether more attractive 'bustle' rear and bespoke hoodMuch improved during the current ownership via a thorough engine overhaul and suspension work etcPreviously featured on the front cover of The Automobile magazine and in 'Lagonda Heritage' by Richard BirdOwned by Lagonda Club stalwart W.J.B. Anderson from 1975 - 2007 and extensively restored in that time A development of the Lagonda 2-litre that was driven by Andre D'Erlanger and Douglas Hawkes to 11th place overall at the 1928 Le Mans 24-hour race, the 'Low Chassis' model was introduced the following year. Benefiting from a redesigned front axle (complete with rerouted braking system) and rear suspension spacers etc, its reduced centre of gravity resulted in notably sharper handling. Powered by a 1954cc 'twin-cam' four-cylinder engine that boasted hemispherical combustion chambers and inclined overhead valves, the 'Low Chassis' was reckoned to be good for 80mph (though this was somewhat coachwork dependant). Concerned that rivals such as Alvis and Sunbeam were beginning to offer cars of similar performance, the Staines-based company unveiled a supercharged derivative at the Brooklands Fete on 19th July 1930. While, the attendant demonstrator wore a Powerplus single-rotor assembly, the majority of 'blown' production cars were specified with either Cozette No.9 (4psi) or altogether rarer Zoller (5-7psi) units. Thus equipped, a 'Low Chassis' 2-litre was reputedly capable of 90mph. Underlining their performance advantage, the Lord de Clifford piloted one to 4th place overall on the 1931 Monte Carlo Rally, while St Albans motorcar dealer W.M. Couper used another one to capture a Glacier Cup on the next year's Alpine Rally. First registered in Surrey on January 14th 1932 (or so its ‘PJ 2716’ number plate would imply), chassis OH10067 began life as a supercharged 2 Litre ‘Low Chassis’ Speed Model complete with factory T3 Tourer coachwork. Surviving World War Two, the Lagonda had had its rear end elegantly reshaped and a bespoke hood frame made by the time that Dr Roger Kirkpatrick took possession in 1951. Custodian for the next six years, the anaesthetist is understood to have commissioned the neat luggage rack which remains in situ from the Bristol Hospital Workshop. Passing through the hands of Bruce Balcombe, Adair Robson, Ron Autiss, Adair Robson (again) and Roland Morgan thereafter, ‘PJ 2716’ came with two engines but had fallen into disrepair when Lagonda Club stalwart W.J.B. Anderson acquired it during 1975. Undeterred, he treated the 2 Litre ‘Low Chassis’ to a ground up restoration over the next few years (various photos relating to which remain on file). Contributing various articles to the Lagonda Club, Mr Anderson kept the Tourer for over three decades before selling it to Channel Islands resident John Refault in 2007. The latter had the bonnet and wings bare metal painted, the fabric body cleaned and the interior smartened (redyed leather, fresh carpets, revarnished dashboard etc) as well as fitting a new front valance, stainless steel exhaust and running boards. Returning to the UK mainland in September 2014, the four-seater entered the current ownership the following May for the princely sum of £83,000. Substantially improved over the past decade, more than the guide price has been spent on a thorough engine overhaul (including the purchase of a new downdraught cylinder head) plus attention to the rear axle (new half shafts), radiator, clutch, water pump, suspension and carburettors etc. The engine’s timing case is stamped with the number ‘2B 1068’ which is indicative of a supercharged unit. The vendor bought a period blower but did not reinstate it on the basis that the downdraught cylinder head gave improved performance but without the complexity of force-fed induction. Still highly presentable and, to our eyes, far more attractive than a standard T3 Tourer, ‘PJ 2716’ started readily during our recent photography session.
