Reference Loomes, B. Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, N.A.G. Press, London 2006. Britten, F.J. Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers, Bloomsbury Books, London 1986. By descent the Drummond family as loaned to the Innerpeffray Library, Crieff in 1999. Drummond was a member of the family who owned and ran Drummonds Bank, and a great-grandson of William Drummond, 4th Viscount Strathallan who died fighting for the Jacobite cause at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Drummond joined the civil service in June 1814, becoming a clerk at the Treasury. He was later Private Secretary to a succession of British Prime Ministers: George Canning, Lord Goderich, the 1st Duke of Wellington, and Robert Peel. On the afternoon of 20 January 1843, Drummond was walking along Whitehall on his way back to Downing Street from visiting his brother at the bank in Charing Cross when Daniel McNaughton, a Scottish woodturner, approached him from behind, drew a pistol and fired at point-blank range into his back. McNaughton was overpowered by a police constable before he could fire a second pistol. It is generally thought, although the evidence is not conclusive, that McNaughton was under the impression that he had shot Prime Minister Robert Peel. At first it was thought that Drummond's wound was not serious. He managed to walk back to his house, the bullet was removed and the first newspaper reports were optimistic: "The ball has been extracted. No vital part is injured, and [surgeons] Mr Guthrie and Mr Bransby Cooper have every reason to believe that Mr. Drummond is doing very well." However, complications set in and Drummond died five days later, aged 50. Reference: Bolitho, H. and Peel, D. The Drummonds of Charing Cross, London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd, 1967. J. A. Omega. A rare and important stainless steel manual wind chronograph bracelet watchModel: Speedmaster Professional 'Racing Dial'Reference: 145.012Date: Purchased 2nd December 1969Movement: 17-jewel Cal.321 manual wind, column wheel chronograph, No.26078428Dial: Black, luminous baton hour markers with red accents, white outer 1/5th second divisions, subsidiary dials at 3, 6 and 9 for seconds, 30 minute and 12 hour recording, red pointed baton hands with luminous inserts, centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, black tachymetre 'DON' insert to bezel, crown flanked by twin pushers, No.26048428Strap/Bracelet: Brushed and polished 1039 Omega link Buckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped 3 69Signed: Case, dial & movementSize: 41mm Accompaniments: Omega box, outer card, International Guarantee Footnotes:Despite being known as the Moon Watch today, the Speedmaster was initially Omega's take on a chronograph wristwatch to be worn and used by racing drivers, originally released in 1957. The current lot features a 'Racing Dial', recognisable by the 'alternating' minute track to the outside. Unlike most minute tracks, this iteration is split into intervals that protrude in and out from the dial edge. They take this particular form in order to make them as visible and easily-readable at a glance as possible, handy for the driver or navigator using it for its intended purpose. The 145.012 Red Racing Dial Speedmaster is one of the rarest Omega watches ever produced. So rare are they that at one point they were assumed to be prototypes that mistakenly left the factory. There are two types, one with 'Professional' to the dial and one without, referred to as 'Pre-Professional.' This example is a Professional and recent estimates put the total production numbers for this iteration at just 5-10. Alongside the white alternating minute track, it is the red hour markers, teamed with red hands, which marks out these incredibly rare watches. This example comes from the son of the original owner. As he recounts it, his father was prompted by his employer to visit a jeweller of his choice to select a watch thanking him for 50 years of service. On attending a small family-run jeweller in Hamilton, a town in the west of Scotland, he chose the Speedmaster, unaware of its rarity, as was the jeweller presumably. He wore the watch frequently, eventually leaving it to the vendor who kept it in a drawer for approximately forty years until early 2024.Complete with box and International Guarantee, this lot presents a wonderful opportunity to own an incredibly rare and very significant piece of Omega history. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
