Theft of the Communion plate from the parish church of Hope under Dinmore near Hampton Court Castle, the remains of the Communion plate, apparently unmarked, likely seventeenth and early-eighteenth century, preserved by the owners of Hampton Court Castle in a cardboard handkerchief box, the underside inscribed, 'Pieces of old Church Plate belonging to Hope Church - and recorded after being carried off by thieves. An account of the robbery is given in an old book belonging to the parish preserved in the parish chest (oak box with two keys)', weight 409g/13.14ozt approxNote: Hampton Court Castle was owned by the Coningsby family from 1510 until 1781, when it was inherited by George Capel, Viscount Malden, son of the 4th Earl of Essex. The 4th Earl's first wife was Frances Hanbury Williams, the daughter of Charles Hanbury Williams of Coldbroke and granddaughter of Thomas Coningsby, 1st Earl Coningsby. The 5th Earl changed his name to Capel-Coningsby and remodelled the building to the designs of the architect James Wyatt. In 1810 the estate was purchased by John Arkwright, the grandson of the inventor and industrialist Richard Arkwright.July 1789: Theft of the Communion plate from the parish church of Hope under Dinmore, near Hampton Court Castle. This was the second theft from a church in the area within a week.Date: August 8, 1789 - August 11, 1789, Publication: London Chronicle, Issue: 5125‘Extract of a Letter from Hereford, Aug. 5.’“On Friday last the remains of the plate mentioned some weeks ago to have been stolen from the churches of Old Radnor and Dinmore were discovered in a pool in the parish of Marcle. Part of it was cut into different sizes, and the rest much bruised, and several round pieces, resembling shillings and sixpences, and apparently made for that purpose, were cut out of the thin parts of the plate, and found with it. From a variety of circumstances, a chimney-sweeper who was seen in that neighbourhood about three weeks since, and who said he was on his road to Bristol, is strongly suspected to be the ingenious authour of this sacrilege and new coinage.”Date: March 26, 1791 - March 29, 1791, Publication: General Evening Post (London, England) Issue: 8970 :-‘At Hereforedshire assizes, John Wilkes, for breaking open the churches of Old Radnor and Hope-under-Dinmore, and William Lewis, for a burglary, received sentence of death, but were afterwards reprived.’The items included in the lot are as per the photographs provided.
