The Delhi Durbar Royal Tour 1911-1912, fine Royal presentation photograph album of the tour with gilt tooled red leather binding entitled 'The King Emperor's Indian Durbar Tour 1911-1912' containing an extensive photographic record of the tour including life on board the Medina, arriving at Port Said and the reception on board for the Khedive of Egypt and Lord Kitchener, the reception at Bombay and the procession at Delhi, various Maharajas, military reviews and the homage of the Indian nobles, tiger shooting and other hunting expeditions mainly on Elephant back, lunching in the jungle, the reception at Calcutta and horse racing, travelling by Royal train to Bombay and departing on the Medina for England via Malta. A very fine Scottish sporting pen work decorated sewing box, probably by Charles Stiven of Laurencekirk, full length wooden hinge, circa 1825 / 1830, the cushion lid with a scene of race horses by a stable (possibly Newmarket), in an open landscape, the main horses minutely and discreetly named in the foreground and from left to right Miss Craven with jockey up, the rear of a horse being saddled by a groom, Brocard with jockey up and a top hatted groom beyond, Fair Helen held by a top hatted groom, Lamplighter with jockey up and Skiff held by a groom, a jockey holding its saddle, a further horse and gentleman rider in the distance, all set within a border of roses, thistles and shamrocks emblematic of the union. The upper border centred by a racing trophy flanked by fruiting vines, the lower border with a fox mask above a hunting horn within a wreath. † The sides gently curved and decorated as follows: † To the front an extensive hunting scene with six scarlet coated huntsmen on horseback, a whipper in on horseback wearing a bowler hat and numerous hounds at full cry, set amid fences and trees. † The left side with three hunting dogs in an open landscape, again minutely and discreetly named – Ruin, Tiney and Balloon. † The right side with three fox hounds in a kennel or stable interior apparently unnamed. † The back with a central panel of a dog amid trees in an open landscape flanked by a vertical panel of a hare and a snipe or woodcock. † The lid interior lined in watered green silk with a ruched fall front panel over a lidded and compartmentalised tray in the style of Edwards with a selection of steel tools and two silver thimbles. † The edge of the box to the right of the lock inscribed in ink ‘Drawings by – Helenora Lady Maxwell’. The inscription is almost certainly erroneous, the pen work is of the highest professional standard and by no possibility the work of a talented lady amateur artist, however the inscription does provide a plausible connection between the likely owner of the box and at least one of the horses depicted. † Lt. General Sir John Shaw Maxwell, 4th Baronet of Springkell (b. 29.06 1772 d. 29.01.1830) married Mary Heron and hence became Sir John Heron Maxwell, he had a sister Helenora, Lady Maxwell (b. 13.12.1765), who married on January 28th 1788, Claude Alexander of Ballochmyle (b. 1752 d. 1809). Ballochmyle was a large estate about a mile outside the village of Mauchline. The horse, Fair Helen, the central horse on the lid, was bought by Sir John Henry Maxwell in 1821 and in that year won eight races including the Earl of Derbys Plate at Preston and the Gold Cup at Carlisle, a trophy Fair Helen won again in 1824 and possibly the trophy illustrated on the lid border. Fair Helen was retired to stud in 1825. All the horses named on the lid, apart from Fair Helen, were retired to stud in 1830 but is no apparent connection between the named horses. †The box appears to be that published in Sylvia Groves The History of Needlework Tools and Accessories, 1966, as plate 94 which states the box was made for John Taylor of Tyrone in 1820 as an intended betrothal gift, stating that it is lined in blue silk. The box is further described on page 66 and is listed in the photographic credits as being the property of Mrs Z. Watkin, who is credited with photographs of six of the boxes illustrated in the book. FERRARI ENZO: (1898-1988) Italian Motor Racing Driver & Manufacturer, founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix motor racing team. Rare T.L.S., Ferrari, in his usual bold purple ink, one page, 4to, Modena, 24th November 1987, to Bruno Alfieri of the Automobilia Company in Milano, on the printed stationery of Ferrari showing to the upper left corner the Ferrari horse logo, in Italian. Ferrari sends the present letter at the age of 89, very close to 90, showing that he was still at the head of the Maranello Scuderia, responding to his correspondent´s letter explaining that they still have time till February 1988, and suggesting to postpone their meeting, stating `Gentile dottore Alfieri, ho ricevuto la sua 17 novembre e la ringrazio del pensiero oltremodo sensibile, ma al 18 febbraio ci sono ancora mesi, avremo modo di parlarme in una data piu prossima´ (Translation: “Dear Doctor Alfieri, I received your letter on November 17th and I thank you for your very sensitive thought, but there are still months until February 18th, we will have the opportunity to speak to each other at a closer time to that date”) Ferrari passed away few months after the meeting he scheduled with his correspondent. CHARLES TOWNE (BRITISH 1763 - 1840) MR. THOMAS EWART'S BAY RACEHORSE HELD BY A TRAINER IN THE GROUNDS OF HIS COUNTRY HOUSE, EVERTON Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 81.3 x 108cm (32 x 42½ in.) Painted in the 1790s. Provenance: Private collection, UK Sale, Sotheby's London, 28th November 1973, lot 161 Arthur Ackerman and Sons, London, 1975 Private collection, UKCharles Towne spent the beginning of his career in Liverpool, making his first equestrian portraits in the early 1790s. Towne was influenced by the work of the Liverpool-born painter George Stubbs (1724-1806), whose Haymakers and Reapers Towne copied from memory in 1787. As in the paintings of Stubbs, Mr Thomas Ewart's racehorse is shown in noble profile, as if cut on a Roman cameo, emphasizing his fine crest and alert stance. He rolls an intelligent eye towards the spectator and slightly bares his teeth, a picture of controlled power. Like most thoroughbreds, this horse probably descended from the Darley Arabian, sent from Aleppo to England in 1704 by Thomas Darley, an Aleppo merchant and son of a Yorkshire squire (1). Interbred with Turkoman horses from the steppes and English and Irish strains, the Darley Arabian's descendants formed the bedrock of the racing thoroughbreds in a sport that was flourishing by the 1790s. Horse and trainer are set by Ewart's country house, which seems to have been in Everton, north of Liverpool's town centre. Rolling countryside in the 1790s, Everton was increasingly peppered with the elegant Georgian mansions of rich merchants, such as the house depicted here. Towne has set the scene within a landscape of great sensitivity, featuring rocky outcrops falling towards a glassy lake, in which trees are reflected. George Finch Mason (1850-1915) 'Double Event - Goodwood, 1899' 'Merman Wins! - The Goodwood Plate and The Goodwood Cup, 1899', each signed and titled, watercolour and bodycolour, 35.5cm x 26cm Merman (foaled in Australia) (1892–1914) was a Thoroughbred racehorse, one of the finest racehorses in Colonial Australian racing history that raced in Europe. Merman's owner W. R. Wilson had made contacts, one of which was the bookmaker Joe Thompson, who at this time was in England. Wilson sent a cable to William Allison offering to sell Merman. Thompson was a mentor to the horse owner and actress Lillie Langtry and after seeing the cable from Wilson she agreed to purchase the stallion through William Allison as an agent, for 1,600 guineas. Merman left Australia on the streamer Aberdeen on 3 December 1896 from Melbourne, arriving in England in February 1897. Women were excluded from registering horses at this time so the horse was registered under the pseudonym Mr. Jersey. Merman started at the Glorious Goodwood meeting at Goodwood Racecourse on 26 July in the 2 miles Goodwood Plate and starting 4/1 as the second favourite won the event easily by 4 lengths. On the next day Merman's owner Lily Langtry married Hugo Gerald de Bathe in Jersey and was present to witness her horse capture the prestigious Goodwood Cup over the 21/2 miles distance.Provenance: The Tanyards Collection, East Sussex
