Lot 175

A large and impressive Iznik “Damascus” style high footed pottery basin (tazza), Ulisse Cantagalli, Florence, northern Italy, circa 1880, The rounded body rising from a slightly waisted foot to a straight lip, the blue, turquoise blue, green and red painted decoration consisting of bold elegant floral spray, one to the well within a medallion of simplified strapwork picked in red, and a repetition thereof to the cavetto, a thin register of a stylised ropework above, the exterior with bolder and larger floral blooms and serrated saaz leaves borne by a swaying tendril, on white ground, the base with maker’s mark painted in black,42cm. diam., 27cm. highProvenance: Purchased from Lady Manton, Houghton Hall in East Yorkshire over 40 years ago for £100Footnotes: The oversize blooms born by scrolling tendrils, elegantly swaying saaz leaves, and the bold flowers with lobed petals recalls two stunning Iznik works : a blue and white mosque-lamp-shaped vase, and a pottery tile panel. The first dated to the 3rd quarter of 16th century is kept at the David Collection in Copenhagen (inv. 18/1967), the second, circa 1550 - 1650 and attributed to Syria, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. C.5-1909).Our large basin's blooms mirror the decoration of the vase seen on the panel at the Fitzwilliam Museum from which rises an impressive flower bouquet and flanked with cypresses. Its wide scrolling tendril with lobed petals flowers are clearly seen on the blue-and-white vase in Copenhagen. Here, on our lot, Ulisse Cantagalli, like other late 19th century European ceramicists  such as Samson, Lachenal, Deck and others, was extremely successful in replicating these mid-16th Ottoman patterns marrying them onto the exterior of this work and rendering the exact tones of the colours seen on the Cambridge panel.Condition Report: With a very fine hairline crack to one side, minor chips to rim

THOREAU, HENRY DAVIDThe Writings of Henry David Thoreau. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906. The Manuscript Edition with a folded manuscript leaf (full recto and verso) bound in, inlaid to size as issued, the set number 431 of 600 sets signed on behalf of the Houghton Mifflin Co. Twenty volumes, three-quarters green levant, spine with strapwork in blind, green cloth sides. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 16 cm); various paginations; frontispieces and map. Generally a sound set, some toning and fading to spines, light wear. This definitive edition of the writings of Thoreau was published with an original manuscript leaf from Thoreau's journals bound in. In the present instance, this is written in ink, but it bears extensive pencil annotations in Thoreau's hand on the recto that almost double the length of the text on the page. This leaf is dated May 16th, 1851 at the head, and so it originates from journal II. Describing a moonlight walk through the countryside, returning by way of the village, the text exhibits Thoreau's typically keen powers of observation. No condition report? λ DAME LAURA KNIGHT (BRITISH 1877-1970) LAMORNA COVE NO.7 (A STONY BEACH) Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 45.5 x 51cm (17¾ x 20 in.) Painted circa 1920.Provenance: Westmorland Fine Arts Private Collection, London (probably acquired from the above circa 1970) Thence by descent to the late owner Undated but believed to be circa 1920, being the date of a number of similar scenes painted of Lamorna Cove from this vantage point. There are seven works titled Lamorna Cove, six of which are of very similar scenes of Lamorna Cove harbour and four of which are oil on canvas. The works vary as between each other in depicting slightly different scenes of boys in a rowing boat within the harbour, swimming in the sea and depicting different aspects of the harbour. The artist states in her autobiography "Many studies were done in the cove itself that year, which resulted in a picture called "Lamorna Cove", the little bay being turned to gold by the reflection of the sun shining on the cliff above". The artist is referring to what has been catalogued as #0203 Lamorna Cove No. 2, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1920. Painted from the top of Trequrnow Cliff, not far from Flagstaff Cottage, where Lamorna Birch lived and not far from the artist's wooden studio shed perched on the rock face, provided by Colonel Paynter who owned most of the land in the surrounding area. Lamorna Cove is flanked by rugged granite cliffs rising to 300 feet. On the eastern flank there are huge piles of quarry spoil, of large chunks of granite that have weathered with vegetation taking hold. The scene reflects what the artist sees in the little bay being turned gold by the reflection of the sun shining on the cliffs, particularly on the crests of the ripples of the sea waves. The scene also depicts a lady and several children sat on the quarry spoil chunks of granite beside the sea. The lady could well be Houghton (Lamorna Birch's wife) and her two daughters together with some other local children gazing at the clear blue waters with its golden reflections. In the background is shown the quarry Count house in front of the quarry worker cottages. We are grateful to R. John Croft F.C.A. for his assistance in cataloguing this lot which will be included in the Laura Knight Catalogue Raisonne currently being prepared.   Condition Report: There are a number of very small brown specks to the upper left quadrant and scattered down the right edge, most likely spots of surface dirt. Inspection under UV reveals no obvious evidence of restoration or repair. Overall work appears to be in good original condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
