JAMES HENRY: (1843-1916) American-born British author. An excellent, lengthy A.L.S., Henry James, twelve pages, 8vo, Grand Hotel de Turin, 16th May n.y. (´Thursday´; annotated as 1907 in pencil in another hand), to his nephew, William James (´Dearest Bill´). James states that he is writing (´a little shamefully, only tonight´) three or four hours before he leaves for Rome ´by the night xpress, which I am taking to avoid too many otherwise too hot & too dusty hours on the so perpetually tunnelled & yet so ensoleillé Genoa - Pisa road´, adding that he has spent five days ´in this very comfortable, if not particularly thrilling place´ where he has rejoiced in not having an acquaintance, but that he must move on, providing the address of the hotel in Rome where he will be staying for ten or twelve days, and remarking of his coming to Italy from France ´the state of it is all charming again, but a growing homesickness breaks through.....Paris fades away into phantasmagoria gold & rose colours & what I most feel, as yet, I fear, is that I couldn´t have borne another day of it on that "keyed-up" basis´. The novelist continues to express his relief at knowing that William is still in Paris in order that he can be of assistance, explaining why and how in some detail, ´I thank the Lord that you are there to do me a little service that my stupidity & inadvertence at the last (in packing) have rendered necessary I shall ask of you. I put away (instead of bringing with me) a set of proofs (with a blue ticket on the 1st page of the set) of a part of The Princess Casamassima, which I am revising for my "big" edition, but I helpless to say if they are in the trunk or in the suitcase I left with you - for there are a mass of proofs, duplicates of those returned, which I haven´t wished for prudence to destroy.....The "set" I mean, at any rate, a folded series with the latest (highest) number of pageing - I forget how high - ought to be near the top - or on top - of either accumulation, as they must have absentmindedly [been] chucked in at the last & it, the "set", is certainly identifiable by its being the only one with H. O. Houghton´s Riverside Press small blue label aforesaid, with date of sending out attached [to] the 1st sheet (There will be in the trunk a duplicate set (of these last sheets) without the label but it is the labelled set please I want, & as I say, it must be the only one. Kindly make sure it´s all in the little folded (once folded) sheaf - I mean by seeing that the highest paged number is in with it. Only you needn´t in the least to rummage wearily in the mass in the trunk to make this out - as I remember the little lot I want were still on my table after I had put those others well away.....There! I think I have made the thing clear - as to what I want. Now they should be sent carefully to.....Rome, & to this end, the Italian post being, one is assured, far from impeccable, should be enclosed in an envelope, a stout one.....& registered. I enclose the envelope that will take it & that should be sealed! I think the proofs will just fit in......but I send a 2nd envelope on the other chance. It will certainly take them, but try the blue one, from London, 1st & as far as the postage, rather heavy, 3 francs or so, I will refund it the instant I return to you´. James concludes by remarking that he has other letters to write now, and signs-off ´I keep a blessing of you & am......your fond old Uncle´. In a postscript, partially cross-written to the upper half of the first page, James remarks ´My journey from Paris was excellent & easy - & in a "lit-salon" to myself, by good luck´ and also urges his nephew to ´Call on the Whartons before they leave, or rather if they have left.....call on them at her brother´s, Mr. Henry Jones´s, 5 (I think, or at any rate 2 doors below where the White´s are) Place des Etats Unis and leave card for Jones´. A wonderful, and apparently unpublished, letter. VGWilliam James (1882-1961) was the son of the American philosopher and psychologist William James (1842-1910), the elder brother of Henry James.Edith Wharton (1862-1937) American writer who mixed with the cream of American literary society and was a close friend of Henry James. Her brother was Henry Edward Jones (1850-1922). The novel The Princess Casamassima was first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly in 1885 and 1886 and then as a book in 1886. It is the story of an intelligent but confused young London bookbinder, Hyacinth Robinson, who becomes involved in radical politics and a terrorist assassination plot. The book is unusual in the Jamesian canon for dealing with such a violent political subject. The ´big´ edition of his works which James refers to in the present letter is known as the New York Edition, a 24-volume collection of the writer´s novels, novellas and short stories originally published in the United States and the United Kingdom between 1907 and 1909. Two more volumes containing James' unfinished novels, The Ivory Tower and The Sense of the Past were issued in 1917 in a format consistent with the original set. The entire collection was republished during the 1960s by Charles Scribner´s Sons. The official title of the set was The Novels and Tales of Henry James, though the more informal title was suggested by James himself and appears as a subtitle on the series title page in each volume.

THOMAS HUDSON (BRITISH 1701 - 1779) PORTRAIT OF CATHERINE 'KITTY' JERVIS (1733-1756), MRS. JEREMIAH SMITH Oil on canvas 127 x 101.6cm (50 x 40 in.) In a period eighteen century swept and pierced, carved and gilded frame Painted circa 1755. Provenance: The sitter's brother, Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent (1735-1823), Meaford Hall, Staffordshire removed from Meaford Hall when the house was sold in 1943 by descent to Edward Swynfen Parker-Jervis Exhibited: Birmingham, City Museum and Art Gallery, Exhibition of Treasures from Midland Homes, 2nd November - 2nd December 1938 (lent by Mr Robert St Vincent Parker-Jervis) Catherine Margaret Jervis, known to her family as Kitty, was the second daughter of Swynfen Jervis (1700-1771) of Meaford Hall, near Stone, Staffordshire and his wife Elizabeth Parker, daughter of George Parker of Park Hall. Both of Kitty's parents came from long-established Staffordshire gentry families; the Jervises had been established in the county since the days of Edward III (reg.1327-77). Swynfen Jervis practised as a lawyer, becoming Counsel to the Admiralty and Auditor to Greenwich Hospital; the family divided their time between Greenwich and their estates. On 18th March 1755 Kitty married at St Alphege, Greenwich a Staffordshire neighbour, Jeremiah Smith of Great Fenton Hall, which was situated eight miles north of Meaford. This portrait was probably made around the time of her marriage. Thomas Hudson was clearly the portraitist of choice for the family: he painted Jeremiah Smith, by then High Sheriff of Staffordshire, in 1762 (Staffordshire County Buildings, Stafford). The Smiths were prominent landowners in Great Fenton, today a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent. By the mid-eighteenth century the area was becoming part of the heartland of the Industrial Revolution, with ceramic producers that would later bear famous names such as Spode, Copeland and Minton. The country was rich in ironstone and coal, essential for the firing of the kilns. Jeremiah Smith obtained mining rights in Fenton which were developed by his descendants. By 1840, a land 'once the pure and peaceful domicile of [the owners'] ancestry [was] but now the black and noisy seat of Cyclopean labours'. Naturally, no hint of this gradual industrialisation is apparent in Hudson's portrait of Kitty Jervis. She is portrayed leaning against a rock with a woodland sunrise beyond. Her elegant, broad-brimmed hat, which gives her a dashing air, puffed sleeves and the feather in her hand are inspired by a Rubens portrait then thought to be of his wife, but which probably depicts his sister-in-law, Susanna Fourment (Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon). It was acquired by Sir Robert Walpole and hung in the Van Dyck Drawing Room at Houghton, but was well known from James McArdell's mezzotint after it. The Rubens portrait sparked a vogue for painting ladies in 'van Dyck' dress, much employed by Hudson in the 1730s and 40s, as well as the use of van Dyck dress in masquerade costumes. Horace Walpole wrote to his friend Horace Mann in 1742 of seeing at the Duchess of Norfolk's masquerade 'quantities of pretty Vandykes, and all kinds of old pictures walked out of their frames' (1). Kitty's costume is a charming fantasy, a hybrid of 'van Dyck' dress and mid-eighteenth century high fashion. The lace choker at her throat is in contemporary vogue, as is her jewellery. A locket probably containing a likeness of her husband is strung from the rubies and pearls at her waist. Hudson repeated this model, down to the rocky background and soft blue silk dress, in a full-length portrait of Mary Bertie, Duchess of Ancaster and Kesteven, painted in 1757 (Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire). The same format is employed in a portrait of Lady Oxenden (Art Gallery of New South Wales), recently reattributed to Hudson's pupil Joseph Wright of Derby. Sadly, Kitty's marriage was short-lived: she died giving birth to her son Charles in 1756. Her portrait was inherited by her younger brother John Jervis (1735-1823), whose brilliant naval career led to his creation as 1st Earl of St Vincent for his victory over the French at Cape St Vincent on 14th February 1797, an action which also brought Captain Horatio Nelson to prominence. A just, well-loved and reforming officer, Jervis crowned his career as Admiral of the Fleet. Kitty's painting remained at Meaford Hall until the house was sold in 1943 and has descended in the Parker-Jervis family. 1) Quoted in London, The Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood, Thomas Hudson 1701-1779, 1979, exh. cat. by Ellen Miles, under n. 15 Condition Report: The canvas has been relined. There is very fine surface cracking across the picture but the paint layer is stable and the impasto is well preserved. Under UV light there are some very minor touches of inpainting to the edges, these are very minor and not visible to the naked eye. It has been cleaned and revarnished.Condition Report Disclaimer

An Arts & Crafts silver caddy spoon by The Artificers' Guild, London 1923, the hammered pear shaped bowl with tapering stem, with green hard stone set, beneath the tree of life terminal, 10cm, long, 23gs (0.75ozs)The Artificers' Guild was formed by Nelson Dawson and Edward Spencer in 1901. The Guild was inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement and was to be one of the longest lasting and most commercially successful ventures. Both men were able designers and skilled craftsmen who worked in many different metals. They also employed the skills of a blacksmith, Walter Spencer, to execute their wrought ironwork. The Guild eventually moved to Conduit Street in London where it remained until it's closure in 1938. The metalwork and jewellery designs of Edward Spencer and other known designers like John Houghton Maurice-Bonnor were very successful. The work regularly featured in The Studio and was exhibited widely.Surprisingly, the history of the Artificers' Guild is not well documented. However, the Goldsmiths' Company does have an excellent archive of the beautifully drawn designs of the firm at Godsmiths' Hall in London.

A large and impressive Iznik “Damascus” style high footed pottery basin (tazza), Ulisse Cantagalli, Florence, northern Italy, circa 1880, The rounded body rising from a slightly waisted foot to a straight lip, the blue, turquoise blue, green and red painted decoration consisting of bold elegant floral spray, one to the well within a medallion of simplified strapwork picked in red, and a repetition thereof to the cavetto, a thin register of a stylised ropework above, the exterior with bolder and larger floral blooms and serrated saaz leaves borne by a swaying tendril, on white ground, the base with maker’s mark painted in black,42cm. diam., 27cm. highProvenance: Purchased from Lady Manton, Houghton Hall in East Yorkshire over 40 years ago for £100Footnotes: The oversize blooms born by scrolling tendrils, elegantly swaying saaz leaves, and the bold flowers with lobed petals recalls two stunning Iznik works : a blue and white mosque-lamp-shaped vase, and a pottery tile panel. The first dated to the 3rd quarter of 16th century is kept at the David Collection in Copenhagen (inv. 18/1967), the second, circa 1550 - 1650 and attributed to Syria, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. C.5-1909).Our large basin's blooms mirror the decoration of the vase seen on the panel at the Fitzwilliam Museum from which rises an impressive flower bouquet and flanked with cypresses. Its wide scrolling tendril with lobed petals flowers are clearly seen on the blue-and-white vase in Copenhagen. Here, on our lot, Ulisse Cantagalli, like other late 19th century European ceramicists such as Samson, Lachenal, Deck and others, was extremely successful in replicating these mid-16th Ottoman patterns marrying them onto the exterior of this work and rendering the exact tones of the colours seen on the Cambridge panel.Condition Report: With a very fine hairline crack to one side, minor chips to rim

In the present instance, this is written in ink, but it bears extensive pencil annotations in Thoreau's hand on the recto that almost double the length of the text on the page. This leaf is dated May 16th, 1851 at the head, and so it originates from journal II. Describing a moonlight walk through the countryside, returning by way of the village, the text exhibits Thoreau's typically keen powers of observation. No condition report?
