HUMMEL JOHANN NEPOMUK: (1778-1837) Austrian Composer and Pianist. Hummel´s music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era. He was a pupil of Mozart, Salieri and Haydn. Hummel replaced the elderly Haydn as Kappelmeister at Eisenstadt. He is widely recognized as a main figure who significantly influenced later piano music of the nineteenth century, such as Chopin, Liszt or Mendelssohn. A very fine A.L.S., `Hummel´, two pages, 4to, Weimar, 19th June 1821, to Director Fränzel, in Munich, in German. Hummel offers one of his opera compositions and fixes what he considers a very fair price, stating in part `...Both as an individual and also as an artist... I offer you my opera "Mathilde von Guise", opera in three acts, for your Court Theater... As far as the fee is concerned... I therefore believe that I am not making an immodest request when I ask for 25 ducats...´ With address leaf. Two small remnants of repairs to the left border, otherwise G to VGMathilde von Guise is an opera composed by Hummel in 1810. Premiered in 1811 in Vienna the opera was met with great acclaim. In 1821 Hummel revised it for a new production.
