The work of Gerald Palmer (poached from MG some five years earlier), it boasted monocoque construction, wind-cheating aerodynamics, all-round independent torsion-bar suspension and rack and pinion steering. Powered by a gutsy flat-four OHV twin-carburettor fed 1486cc engine mated to a four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox (complete with column change), it combined 80mph performance with distinctly sporty handling. A full five-/six-seater family car, its poise and agility were rewarded with class wins in the Monte Carlo Rally (1949, 1951), Spa 24-hours (1949, 2-litre Touring Car) and Tulip International Rally (1953). Upgraded with a fully hydraulic braking system in 1952, it succumbed to Jowett's financial woes the following year after some 23,307 had been made (though, survivors are comparatively few and far between).‘RKM 260’ was registered new by Kent County Council on the 13th of July 1953, being supplied to its first owner a Walter William Wright. Passing through several owners through the 1950s and 1960s, the Javelin is next known to have been acquired by the previous ownership in 2009. A regular attendee of local events and shows through this fifteen-year ownership, the Jowett was widely improved during this time, benefiting from over £2,000 worth of improvement including boot floor restoration; refreshed suspension with new shock absorbers; new wheel cylinders; new gearbox bearings and clutch; restored fuel tank; overhauled carburettors; new valve springs; new timing chain; and fuel pump refurbished.Purchased by the vendor just over a year ago, having owned a Javelin in the 1960s, unfortunately, circumstances have since changed. Further improved in his ownership however, receiving a water pump overhaul, attention to the gear linkages, and four new cross ply tyres. Boasting its original registration number, at some stage of its life, the Javelin received a factory re-conditioned engine. Starting readily and running well during the recent photography session, the vendor informs that all the switches and dials on the dashboard work, including the clock! Offered with a history file that contains the buff logbooks, a collection of previous MOT certificates, tax discs, and original instruction book, maintenance manual, spare parts catalogue, competition tuning notes guide, and lubrication chart. 1952 Jowett Javelin Delux saloon. reg. no. GVY 333, chassis no. E2PD21769D.Offered for sale by Direction of Executors, this scarce Jowett was purchased by the late owner, a retired mechanic, in 2019, for £4000 as a good running example. Finished in dark silver with a delightful red leather interior, it has sadly not been in use in recent years and will require recommissioning and light restoration. It is supplied with a V5 and history file including original handbook and service manual, an article written about this car in Thoroughbred & Classic Cars in April 1987 at which point it had been lovingly restored by an enthusiast who had owned it for 18 years. The Jowett Motor Company was originally founded in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire by brothers Benjamin and William. The Jowett brothers began trading in 1901 and they produced both cars and commercials which were designed for the steep hills and sharp bends of the Yorkshire Woollen towns and Yorkshire Dales. Jowett used aluminium extensively and their vehicles were light, low-geared, reliable and competitively priced. They favoured the ability to climb over speed.This 1934 Jowett Kestrel presents well in dark green and black coachwork following an earlier restoration. On a recent inspection the car started first time and we are told that this rare British classic runs well. Its lightweight construction contributes to agile handling, making it popular among enthusiasts. With a combination of elegance and practicality, the Kestrel embodies the innovation of the 1930s automotive industry, standing out as a charming piece of automotive history. This Jowett Kestrel is available due to the unfortunate passing of its enthusiast owner and Jowett aficionado. Offered without reserve this is an ideal addition to any collection. The Jowett Javelin was produced from 1947 to 1953 by Jowett Cars ltd of Idle, near Bradford . The model went through five variants coded PA to PE. The designation changed to coincide with the London Motor Show in November but actually engineering design changes occurred frequently during the total production run, as and when required. The car was designed by Gerald Palmer during World War II and was intended to be a major leap forward from the relatively staid designs of pre-war Jowetts. Just over 23,000 units were produced. In a 1949 road test report The Times' correspondent welcomed the Javelin's good performance and original design.This Javelin presents well in Black coachwork with beige trim. Originally registered on 21st December 1951, this example is offered from the estate of a Jowett enthusiast. During his tenure the car benefitted from both regular maintenance and regular use. Design features include aerodynamic styling and headlights faired into the wings, a column gearchange that allowed for the fitment of a practical bench seat and the ability to carry six people. This well cared for and rare Jowett is offered to auction with a V5C registration document various bills and receipts and without reserve.
